Born in [[Staincross]], [[Barnsley]], Patchett served as [[Member of Parliament]] for [[Barnsley East and Mexborough (UK Parliament constituency)|Barnsley East]] from 1983 until his death, and was a member of the [[Labour Party (UK)|Labour Party]]. In [[Parliament of the United Kingdom|Parliament]] he worked for the mining communities of [[Yorkshire]]. He died in office in [[Sheffield]] in October 1996 aged 56, and the resulting by-election was won by [[Jeff Ennis]].
