Early career

In January 2001, Rico Suave and Ricky Santana defeated Thunder and Lightning to win the World Tag Team Championship.[1]

On March 30, 2001, the team defeated Eddie Watts & Rico Suave in a non-title match.[2] As part of this feud, Thunder and Lightning won a series where the members of both teams wrestled individually, but were assaulted afterwards.[3] On April 7, 2001, both members entered the Copa Alcalde, which was ultimately won by Carly Colón, whom they saved from an assault by González afterwards.[4] They defeated Rico Suave and Eddie Watts in a hardcore match.[5] Thunder and Lightning defeated El Nene and Jungle Jim Steele.[6] Continuing their feud with La Familia del Milenio, they defeated the team of El Nene and Jungle Jim Steele.[7] During the following months, the team defeated the teams that represented La Familia, including Alpha Phi Slam (Billy Brooks and Brett Blair).[8] On June 9, 2001, Thunder and Lightning dropped the titles to Rico Suave and Ricky Santana.[9] The team won a rematch held a week later to earn an opportunity for the titles.[10] Thunder and Lightning defeated two of the recent main eventers, Ricky Frontán and José Huertas González.[11] The team then migrated to a feud against Carly and Eddie Colón, wrestling them to a no contest on August 4, 2001.[11] In February 2002, Habana helped Víctor Rodríguez and Jeff Jablonski defeat Thunder and Lightning.[12]

At Venganza Boricua, Thunder and Lightning defeated the Broncos by disqualification to retain the titles.[13] The second night of the event, the third Bronco, Ramón Álvarez, caused a disqualification in their favor.[14] Both defeated the Broncos in singles.[15] Thunder and Lightning went on to defeat Atroman and Muhhamad Hassan, also members of this stable.[16] The team then feuded with the Broncos, retaining the titles in their first encounter due to the intervention of the heel manager.[17] On June 6, 2003, they dropped the titles to Bronco 2 & Bronco 3 in a cage match.[18] Both made a brief singles run, where they defeated Chris Candido and Mark Falk respectively.[19]

Thunder vs. Lightning

Parallel to this, WWC began running a storyline where frictions occurred between both members, which was elaborated when Thunder saved Lightning from being hit with a foreign object during a singles match, but this resulted in the latter being disqualified.[20] On June 21, 2003, Lightning turned on Thunder, beginning a feud between them.[21] Following this angle, Lightning was pushed and picked Víctories over masked wrestler Vengador Boricua and Julio Estrada.[22][23] The first night of Aniversario, both wrestled individually in anticipation to their encounter, Lightning lost a disqualification to Carly Colón, who was returning after joining WWE, while Thunder defeated the leader of the heel stable, Ramón Álvarez.[24] On July 17, 2003, both appeared in Club sunshine in order to promote the event.[25] The following night, Lightning defeated Carlos Colón and Eddie Colón in the final of a tournament to crown a new Universal Heavyweight Championship, while Thunder was eliminated after wrestling Mike Awesome to a double disqualification in the first round.[26] The encounter between both ended in a double disqualification, when the referee lost control of the action.[27] Thunder was able to win a rematch.[28] Despite both competing against wrestlers such as Ricky Frontán and Álvarez in singles, they continued intervening in each other’s matches.[29] In their following encounter Thunder got the disqualification win.[30] The team’s former trainer was involved in backstage segments, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the situation.[31] On August 16, 2003, while both wrestled for the Universal Heavyweight Championship, Rosario entered the ring in an attempt to convince Lightning to join his former partner.[32] Following intervention from his stable he turned on the heels by chokes laming Tigresa, marking the end of their feud. The team then feuded with several members of the heel stable, including the makeshift team of José Rivera, Jr. and Diamante Dominicano.[33] Both also expressed their intention to expand beyond the tag team division and, if possible, win all the titles of WWC.[34] The team also resumed their feud with the Broncos with a win.[35] However, during this timeframe their matches often featured the intervention of heel and ended in losses.[36] During this timeframe, they continued gathering wins over the Broncos.[37][38] A rivalry between the team and José Rivera, Jr. and Dominican Boy concluded in individual wins over the former, but Lightning losing the Universal Heavyweight Championship to the latter.[39] Encounters between both teams also concluded without a clear winner or with one of the parts cheating for a dirty win.[40][41] Both teams also clashed in singles, with mixed results.[42] Thunder and Lightning were then involved in a feud with the Shane Twins, against whom they exchanged win as singles.[43] One of the Shane Twins was replaced for the first titular match of this feud, which Thunder and Lightning won.[44]

IWA-PR

The jump of Thunder and Lightning from WWC reinvigorated a new version of La Familia, who quickly joined Ray González in a stable match against the representatives of La Compañía.[45] Soon afterwards, the team was involved in confrontations with Los Boricuas.[46] The team dominated in the first match of this series.[47] Soon afterwards, they resumed their role as González’s team partners in the ongoing stable feud. At the Armed and Dangerous PPV, Los Boricuas lost to Thunder and Lightning.[48] Castillo tried other partners, but lost rematches.[49] On February 7, 2004, Los Boricuas successfully defended the World Tag Team Championship against Thunder and Lightning.[50] However, the team remained in the winning side of this feud in non-title matches.[51] On February 21, 2004, a tournament was held for the World Tag Team Championships following a confrontation between several teams, with Thunder and Lightning defeating Los Boricuas in the finals.[52] Víctor and Jett Jablonski defeated Thunder and Lightning.[53] On November 6, 2004, after defeating the representatives of La Compañía yet again, the team joined Ray González in a sudden heel turn.[54] The team was then involved in a series with Carlos Cotto and Daniel García.[55][56][57] At IWA Extravaganza, Thunder and Lightning defeated KC James and Shane.[58] At Juicio Final 2004, Thunder and Lightning retained their titles over Vampiro and Sinn.[59] On April 24, 2004, the team retained over Cotto and his new partner, KC James.[60] After interfering on behalf of Ray González during a match, Thunder and Lightning were confronted by Miguel Pérez, Jr. and KC James, but lost the first encounter between both teams.[61][62] However, Thunder and Lightning dominated subsequent encounters.[63] The team defended the titles against Sewell and KC James twice, winning the first but wrestling to a double draw.[64][65] On June 19, 2004, the team dropped the titles in another rematch.[66] Thunder and Lightning jumped right back in the chase for the titles.[67] Individually, both teams exchanged victories.[68] At Summer Attitude, Thunder and Lightning retained the titles when James turned on Sewell.[69] On July 25, 2004, they lost a non-title match to Cotto and Venom.[70] Thunder and Lightning then won a mask vs. layoff match, where Venom was pinned and expelled from the promotion.[71] Thunder and Lightning then defeated the makeshift tag team of main eventers Apolo and Ricky Banderas.[72]

La Capitol

On April 25, 2004, Cotto and Venom won the World tag Team Championship in a cage match.[73] After gaining control of the IWA and trying to change its name to Capitol Sports (in reference to Capitol Sports Promotions, WWC’s original name), González spent weeks trying to frame Savio Vega for attacking Huertas in order to recruit him into his faction. However, on October 2, 2004, Rivera aired a video that revealed that Thunder and Lightning had attacked him and left behind a bat to frame him.[74] At Golpe de Estado 2004, Savio Vega and Huertas defeated Thunder and Lightning by disqualification.[75] In singles Thunder helped Lightning defeat Cotto, but lost himself to Slash Venom.[76] At Christmas in PR, Gonzales lost to Huertas by disqualification when Thunder and Lightning interfered on his behalf.[77] Later in the event, they teamed with Billy Gunn in a loss to Vega, Shane and Banderas. In July it was announced that their return as a team would be postponed.[92] On February 4, 2006, Thunder and Lightning dropped the titles to Banderas and Cruz.[93] An angle was developed where both Banderas and Cruz wanted an opportunity for the World Heavyweight Champion, and General manager Orlando Toledo chose the latter, prompting the other members of La Cruz del Diablo to distance from him.[94] The team then dropped the titles to Thunder and Lightning when Banderas allowed Cruz to be pinned after an outside intervention. Despite the animosity, both teamed again the following week in a rematch. Apolo and Mr. Big then teamed to defeat Thunder and Lightning.[95] Banderas had to wrestle Lightning, but lost when his former partner interfered.[96] Meanwhile, Thunder defeated Apolo by disqualification. At IWA Uncensored, Apolo defeated Lightning in singles.[97]
