Development

In September 2014, following the end of the first series of Our Girl, Lacey Turner, who played protagonist Molly Dawes, departed from the show to return to her role on EastEnders.[1] In June 2015, it was announced that as a result, actress Michelle Keegan had been cast as Georgie, a new character would replace Molly as the show's lead character for the show's upcoming second series.[2] Keegan voiced excited to join the show, expressing: "I'm a massive fan of the series so I can't wait to be a part of it. It's going to be a big but exciting challenge for me".[2]

The second series was set to take place in Kenya and a BBC spokesman teased that "It won't be an easy posting as she has to earn the love and trust of her fellow soldiers, and the greater respect of her commanding officer, while working alongside aid workers in the world's biggest refugee camp. Kenya will be full of surprises that will challenge Georgie professionally and personally".[2]

The new five-part series is about medics in the British Army. Keegan will play Corporal Georgie Lane, an army medic on a risky mission in Kenya.[2]

Keegan trained in the gym, despite "hating" it.[3]

Keegan disclosed that to prepare for Georgie, she had met with army medics to hear their stories to gain a better understanding of her character.[3]

In September 2014, it was announced that Lacey Turner, who played protagonist Molly Dawes in the first series, had left the show to return to her role on EastEnders.[6]

In June 2015, it was announced that Michelle Keegan had been cast as Georgie Lane, an army medic and the show's new protagonist.[2] As a "massive fan" of the series, Keegan expressed excitement to play Georgie.[2]

Keegan "First time I put on the uniform it felt quite surreal but then I immediately felt the sense of duty - as if I was in the military".[7]

Gutsy, passionate and unstoppable, Georgie is an army medic that loves the British Army. Having done a number of tours including Afghanistan, she relishes the adrenaline and adventure that working with the army brings. Her strength comes from the fact that she’s brave, and that courage stems from her empathy. However she is unable to switch off and she is emotionally tough - hardened and a little cynical.[4]

Keegan Georgie is an experienced army medic. She is good at her job, very professional and she knows what she wants in her life. Georgie puts her work first and not afraid to get stuck in, especially with the lads as well. I wouldn’t say she is the alpha, but she doesn’t take anything lying down.[8]

Georgie Lane, having tours under her belt, is a more experienced and confident soldier than Molly was and this give the piece a more grown up feel. Attached to 2-Section Lance Corporal Lane knows how to deal with squaddies and can give as good as she gets.[9]

Hopefully the audience will hold Georgie Lane's hand and go on this incredible, unforgettable journey with her.[9]

Gone is Lacey Turner's Molly Dawes (we find out a few minutes in that she's back in Afghanistan working with the training and advisory team) and in her place is Georgie – a gutsy, passionate army medic from Stockport. A workaholic who relishes a challenge, she's already done several tours of duty. First recruited by the army when they visited her school, Georgie joined the Royal Army Medical Corps which led her to the front line in Afghanistan where she met her first love, Elvis. But she doesn't like to talk about him.[10]

Reception

Dale Cowan of Cultbox described the announcement of Molly's replacement with Georgie as "bittersweet",

Many are unhappy, not just with Lacey Turner’s decision not to return to the role of Molly, but also that Michelle Keegan is seen as a suitable replacement. The general consensus is that Keegan is not a strong enough actress to carry the weight of the show on her shoulders. This may be a tad unfair. Michelle Keegan, like her predecessor Lacey Turner, had her start in a continuing drama and was very popular as Tina McIntyre in Coronation Street. She also had a well-received role in BBC One’s recent drama Ordinary Lies, which no doubt put her into the eye of casting directors looking for a suitable and similar replacement. However, it does remain to be seen whether Michelle Keegan’s will prove as popular as medic Corporal Georgie Lane. The actress is a fan, however: “I’m a massive fan of the series so I can’t wait to be a part of it. It’s going to be a big but exciting challenge for me so I can’t wait to get started.”.[11]
