From Old English lāc, from Proto-Germanic *laiką (“game, dance, hymn, sport, fight”). Cognates include Old Norse leikr (whence Danish leg (“game”), Swedish leka (“to play”)), Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌺𐍃 (laiks, “dance”). Doublet of lek.
