Etymology

From Old English lāc, from Proto-Germanic *laiką (game, dance, hymn, sport, fight). Cognates include Old Norse leikr (whence Danish leg (game), Swedish leka (to play)), Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌺𐍃 (laiks, dance). Doublet of lek.
