editBorrowed from Italian ciao (“hello; goodbye”), from Venetan ciao (“hello; goodbye”, literally “[I am your] servant”), from Medieval Latin sclavus (“Slav; slave”). Doublet of sklavo and slavo. Colloquial use likely reinforced by German servus (“hello; goodbye”), which is used similarly.
