From Proto-Pathan *las, from an ancestral Middle Iranian form *lás,[1] from Proto-Iranian *dáca, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dáća, from Proto-Indo-European *déḱm̥.[2] Cognate with Persian ده (dah), Urdu دس (das).
