From Proto-Turkic *yā(y) (bow). Cognate with Kazakh жай (jai), Kyrgyz жаа (jaa), Kumyk жая (jaya), Azerbaijani yay, Turkish yay, Turkmen ýāý, Uzbek yoy, Shor чачақ, Tuvan ча (ça), Western Yugur ya (arrow), etc.
