From Proto-Indo-Iranian *tápas (heat), from Proto-Indo-European *tépos, from *tep- (be warm, be hot). Cognate with Persian تب (tab, fever), Latin tepeō. Equivalent to तप् (tap) +‎ -अस् (-as).
