Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἄρτος (ártos, leavened loaf), probably from Mycenaean Greek 𐀀𐀵 (a-to), from the compound word 𐀀𐀵𐀡𐀦 (a-to-po-qo, bakers). Compare Greek αρτοποιός (artopoiós, baker).
