Romanian
editEtymology
editProbably from Latin vellere, present active infinitive of vellō, with a change in conjugation. Traditionally, it was usually thought to be from Slavic bĕliti (“to whiten”); however, this presents a problem with semantics and there is already another word in Romanian derived from this source, bili, that preserved the original meaning. [1] Compare also Aromanian bilescu.
