editEtymology
editSupposedly palapati, borrowed from Malay parapati (“pigeon”), from Sanskrit पारापत (pārāpata, “pigeon”). According to Potet (2016), the word was borrowed via written Malay. The Jawi ڤ (p) was misread as ق (q). Thus, changing the /p/ into a /k/ when spoken. Compare Pangasinan malapati, Kapampangan patipati, Bikol Central salampati, Cebuano pati, Maranao marampatik, Tausug māpati, and Malay merpati. Doublet of patipati.
