From Proto-Finnic *rugis, borrowed from either a Baltic or Germanic language, compare Lithuanian rugys and Proto-Germanic *rugiz. Cognate with Finnish ruis, Votic rüiz, ruiz, Veps rugiž, and Livvi ruiš.
