From Proto-Albanian *ϑeuk-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewk- (to glow, burn, lighten). Perhaps related to flak (flame). Cognates include Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬊𐬐 (saok), Northern Kurdish sotin and Persian سوختن (suxtan, to burn). Alternatively to be compared with Lithuanian senkù, sèkti (to sink, to dry up), Gothic sigqan (to sink), Proto-Slavic *sęknǫti (to dry up).
