This is the very initial. You need to analyze your raw data, it's source and findings before moving ahead. The source must be clear and you need to store in a a needed format.
-
Actually I strongly recommend using the programming language community you are working with on your data! This will give you the right idea 💡 of what kind of input you need and what kind of output to expect and so on... Remember! If you are working alongside a large community, always consider the possibility of an existing solution cause someone might have encountered the same problem before!!! Good luck 🤞🏻🍀

Bioinformatics tools are developed by specialists in the field, often with the assumption the tools are used by other specialists. Therefore, as an end-user, it is worthwhile to spend time to read the documentation and understand the tool capabilities and limitations. If only reading the docs doesn't make things clearer, consider taking (online) courses, or reach out to other bioinformaticians in your network or on the plethora of online fora.

Interpreting Bioinformatics results often require three main qualities 1. Knowledge of biology - to know what change, trend or pattern are you looking at in the result. This means to understand the significance of the result in a biological sense. 2. Understanding of Statistics - most of the bioinformatics results are the outcomes of some sort of statistical test. So it is extremely important to have the skills and talent to understand graphs 📈, tables and inferred statistical coefficients! This is by far the most important quality of the three! 3. Understanding of analytical methods - It would be awesome to have programming skills in R, Python, Unix and C++, but it is not mandatory. However it is important to know how the results came!

Take the time to understand how bioinformatic tools work by checking out the scientific articles introducing them. Test these tools with established data sets to see how reliable and capable they are. If you encounter errors or confusing results with your data, reach out to the authors or experts for help and clarification.

Applying and interpreting statistics correctly is an essential step in bioinformatics analysis. Statistics help in interpreting large biological datasets, identifying patterns, and drawing meaningful conclusions. They provide a framework for hypothesis testing, validating results, and developing predictive models. By using proper statistical techniques, researchers can minimize biases and errors, ensuring the reliability of their analysis. Statistics play a crucial role in extracting relevant information, quantifying the significance of observed differences, and making accurate predictions. Overall, statistics are fundamental in bioinformatics analysis and help researchers make sense of complex biological data and draw reliable conclusions.

There is no bioinformatics without biology. One of the keys when approaching bioinformatics data is first asking the right biological question. This means being embedded in the literature, knowing the state-of-the-art in your field and understanding your biological system. As biologists, we're trained to deal in ambiguity. Applying this mindset to data interpretation is a powerful skill of biologists in bioinformatics. Unless you are comparing very distinct biological systems (e.g. Tumour vs Normal), there won’t necessarily be an obvious outcome when you first process data. This is where a biologists comfort in ambiguity becomes a secret weapon, a bit like a detective making connections between clues and pieces of evidence to solve cases.

As a researcher, it's vital to grasp the fundamental needs in addressing biological inquiries. Today, we have access to emerging methods and bioinformatic tools that aid in effectively answering these questions. In some studies, combining different approaches to tackle the same question is possible. Having more data and results significantly boosts our ability to interpret findings accurately. Additionally, sharing data and actively communicating with peers and experts amplify these advantages.
-
Given the array of bioinformatic tools, pipelines, and methods, no analysis in bioinformatics is without imperfections. Experimenting with varied approaches and validating results is key to identifying the most effective analysis methods. Maintaining awareness of current limitations enables future revisiting and improvement. Prioritize transparency and reproducibility in your analysis to enhance this ongoing refinement process.
