Hi folks,

I am happy to announce that RFC: Making dtype promotion semantics in Tensorflow more consistent is ready for review.

The feedback phase will be open til November 04, 2022. Comments are invited to the pull request linked. You can view the design doc here, and also leave comments inline on the document source.

Summary:
  • This RFC introduces a set of dtype promotion semantics in Tensorflow, including modes ALL, SAFE and NONE.
  • The proposed changes will make TF dtype promotion more consistent in binary ops.
  • Mode ALL will be similar to NumPy, with differences discussed in the doc. The other two modes (SAFE and NONE) provide better predictability at the cost of less allowed implicit dtype promotions.
Thanks for your review and participation!
