Urgent: Clarification Needed on Web Push Notification Support and Migration to VAPID after June 21, 2024

Hi everyone,

I've been reading through the blog post and FAQ on these pages:
However, I have some specific questions about Web Push notifications.

Our Context
  • Current Setup: We use a custom setup for sending Web Push notifications via Firebase.
  • Fallback Plan: Currently, we do not have an alternative solution for Google pushes.
  • Impact: If the current system stops working, all Google-related web pushes will not be received.
Main Concerns
  1. Will we still be able to send Web Push notifications using VAPID after June 21, 2024?

    According to the information, the following endpoint will be deprecated:
    `https://fcm.googleapis.com/fcm/send`

    For example, the Web Push endpoint currently used is:
    https://fcm.googleapis.com/fcm/send/eh-Wy7oLgW4:APA91bHLhNXn28xwrXxnQ107u9SUT8uIOuxN2....
  2. If the current system stops working after June 21, 2024, what should we use for new integration?
  3. We need guidance on migrating to the VAPID Key version. The provided documentation is somewhat unclear to us.
  4. Additionally, we have a v2 endpoint from Peter Beverloo's repository. Will this work, and what about this URL (https://fcm.googleapis.com/wp/SubscriberID): Push Message Generator? 

We haven't gone through a similar migration before, so any detailed advice or steps on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone, 

We have the same question on our end. Does anybody have an answer? 

I found this Stackoverflow question that makes me think Web Push notifications/VAPID should continue to work but I would like to be 100% sure before committing to leaving our code as is.

Hi Cem,

I reach to Peter who works on Google. He said for vapid web-push does not effected on this deprecation.

He said: 
>>> the Web Push endpoints will not be deprecated. This is about regular FCM use, and the FCM for Web API that applies when you use Firebase' provided service worker code, and then send messages using the regular FCM APIs as opposed to Web Push.
