CentralNotice/Request

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Start your request for a CentralNotice banner campaign here!

The aims of this process are as follows:

  • To improve community access to central notice through a clear and transparent process.
  • To improve best practice and ensure greater consistency in campaign implementation.
  • To improve communication around campaigns. Creating clear forums for feedback on campaigns, providing metrics back to campaigns and also a clear method for assessing community consensus for campaigns relating to advocacy.
  • To reduce potential clashes between campaigns

Requests must be made, at minimum, 10 days in advance of any campaign

Step #1 : Review the usage guidelines for CentralNotice
Step #2 : Create your request
Step #3 : Include it on this page.
Step #4 : Add it to the calendar and check for conflicting campaigns in your period for language/geotargeting. Contact the organizers of the other campaigns to solve them!
Step #5 : Notify target projects and geographic affiliates. Add edit diff links to request.
Step #6 : CN Admin & Community feedback [7 days]
Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days])
Step #7 : Approval/rejection
Step #8 : CN Admin sets up campaign (recommended to allow for up 3 days)
Step #9 : Campaign enabled

List of currently active volunteer CentralNotice administrators:

@دنيا please don't forget to include your request on CentralNotice/Request (per step 3) next time [1].

And please provide the banner code (a mix of html and css like this) or provide an icon and a simple line of text if you want us to use the standard banner (preview).

Also per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines banner campaigns lasting longer than two weeks usually need community approval. And if you want to reach out to multiple language versions, we usually require translations for all those languages. Looking at your landing page it seems to aim at minorities in the Arab world – is there a reason why you want to target logged-out (and logged-in) users all around the world? --Johannnes89 (talk) 06:30, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Johannnes89, thank you so much for your response.
Noted on the 3rd step.
For the banner, I added a text and a logo and you can use them for the banner.
and for the languages, I did not realise the difference between the countries and the languages, but what I need is to reach Arabic people all over the world as many of them are in non-Arab countries, this is replying to your question, and reach them on Commons. Is that ok for the announcement to be just in English?
and please, if I need the consent of the commons community approval please send me a link to request that. Best دنيا (talk) 22:16, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi @Reda,

I am happy to help, but have some additional comments first.

SheSaid banners in general run on a low diet on the Wikipedia (to get Wikipedia editors to start on Wikiquote), not only on Wikiquote as in your request above. I can turn it on for the Arab Wikipedia ahead of the general start of the SheSaid campaign, but last time I created a banner for the Arab Wikipedia I received complaints that the CentralNotice banners were not visible, and I think it is the piece of code in line 1032 and 1039 of the Arab Wikipedia common.css that hides all CentralNotice campaigns to the project. Has there been a community consultation on this? I'd like to read the discussion and reasons for the decision.

About the banner design your created: CN banners don't run from the front but from the server side and therefore have to be scripted in HTML/CSS. Information like in the general SheSaid campaign is what I need, though 1) a line of text 50-70 characters max, 2) a visual (not too detailed) and 3) one landingpage link (in the same language as the text) is already enough for me to create the banner. My coding abilities are limited and I don't know how to create links to multiple pages in one banner though. Also, as explained in the banner guidelines, we do not link to non-Wikipedia sites directly from the banners. The two Google docs in your design can definitely not be in the banner: they can of course be on the landing page if you choose so. Ciell (talk) 16:23, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This gadget not only hides fundraising banners, but all CentralNotice banners: w:ar:MediaWiki:Gadget-HideFundraisingNotice.css. Romaine (talk) 09:44, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, maybe that is the blocker Romaine, thanks! I see it was created back in 2008 and that was before we used the banners for something else than just fundraising requests. A small code change would do the trick, right? Ciell (talk) 09:54, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AKibombo-WMF there are multiple issues with your requests:

  • You didn't follow the instructions at CentralNotice/Request, leaving out step 3 by only adding it to the calendar, not to the request page [2] (done by others [3][4]), that's one reason why you didn't get a response so far.
  • You didn't fill out the requests properly [5]
  • Per CentralNotice/Banner guidelines banners are created using a mix of HTML of CSS. You are supposed to provide the banner code (except if it's just the standard banner with a different icon + text). This [6] cannot be used as a banner, because images are not responsive (which is especially bad on mobile devices).
  • Per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines we usually expect translations, if a banner is shown to non-English projects, but given that your desired banner doesn't have much text, it's probably not needed in this case.
  • Also per CN guidelines the campaign duration should typically be no longer than 2 weeks. We usually request people to get consensus from local communities if they want to run campaigns for longer. It should be possible to run it for longer without discussion if the priority is set to low (only showing the banner after other banners, running at the same time, have been shown).
  • Is there a reason, why you want the banners to be shown to anonymous users? This means millions of readers might see the invitation to apply for a scholarship, even though it appears to be for people involved in the open or Wikimedia movement?
  • WMF should have the resources to create CN banners + campaigns themselves. I don't see a reason why volunteers should deal with this?

The same comment also applies to CentralNotice/Request/Wikimedia+Libraries Convention 2025 scholarship application --Johannnes89 (talk) 09:13, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Great to have SheSaid back, and happy to help set up the campaign and banner.

Like last year, we will only enable the campaign for those languages in which the banner + landing page has translations. Can you please supply me with a list of these before the expressed starting date of the campaign? I will try and create a preview of the banner for you to check out over the weekend. Meanwhile, you and the colleagues can start translations ahead of the start of the campaign here. Ciell (talk) 18:31, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am proposing the Wikipedia banner to start on Sept 2nd, because the WLM banners will also already go live on the 1st. Does that make sense to you? Ciell (talk) 18:49, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MPossoupe please note that volunteer CentralNotice admins cannot provide you with such metrics, as we don't have access to any data on banner performance. We've mentioned this to the WMF in the past, but so far nothing has been done about it. You'll need to ask people at the foundation (e.g. the team responsible for WMF fundraising banners) who have access to those metrics. --Johannnes89 (talk) 06:35, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Johannnes89, well noted, thanks.
Can you, please, confirm for the setups requested for the campaign? 1 bucket with 4 banners: banner 1 shown to 70% of the target, banners 2, 3 and 4 to 10% of the target each?
Many thanks
MPossoupe (WMF) (talk) 07:53, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MPossoupe (WMF) I've created the campaign [7] as well as the banners: Main banner [8] (preview [9]), second version [10] (preview [11]), third version [12] (preview [13]), fourth version [14] (preview [15]).
I've also added the same script which has been used at the last U4C elections, displaying the banner only to users with 300 local edits. Note that that's not the same as the actual criteria (which look at global edits), but given that this was acceptable for the U4C election, I guess it's fine for the board elections as well. If not, I would like to ask you to provide such a script yourself. Volunteer CentralNotice admin capacity is very limited and the WMF should be able to find an employee who could write a more advanced script (most of us would like the WMF to take care of their own banner campaigns in general given the limited volunteer capacity).
I also changed that the banners translation links to the correct location – please make sure to addd some WMF translations before the campaign starts, because those translations need CN admin approval (without approval the English version will be shown). Johannnes89 (talk) 17:02, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the amazing support @Johannnes89 setting up the campaign and providing the translations links. Well appreciated.
I have made a small style change on the banner link to have it underline. I have updated the script accordingly, taking into the recent changes you made. Can you please update in your settings?
The scripts are here:
Regarding supporting CN admins work, few weeks ago, the Foundation has recruited a staff to support your works.
Thanks,
MPossoupe (WMF) (talk) 18:25, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know that the foundation has finally recruited a staff member for CN support and I'm very grateful for that. But given that there are currently only 5-6 volunteer CN admins who are at least somewhat active while there are 23 WMF accounts with CN admin permissions, I don't see a reason why the foundation can't handle their CN requests entirely by themselves.
I've update the four banners [16] (you can use the preview links from my comment above). Johannnes89 (talk) 19:32, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Johannnes89. Have a look at the previews and all looks good.
Also, can we please remove the 300 local edits settings and display all the 4 banners to logged-in users only.
Many thanks,

@Paula I've created the campaign [17] as well as the banner [18] (preview [19]). Please check if everything is correct.

Please note that per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Campaign implementation we usually need community consensus for banner campaigns lasting longer than two weeks (especially if they target both logged in and logged out users). Given that geotargeting limits the banner to Uruguay it's probably fine as long as the local community is aware of your campaign. --Johannnes89 (talk) 08:25, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Johannnes89: thank you! Our community is already informed but I'll keep this information in mind next time we asked for a banner. I've change the phrase a little bit. Everything else is OK. Thank you very much again. Best, Paula (WDU) (talk) 14:05, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Adélaïde,

Here is the banner preview, banner code and the campaign with the campaign settings. Please check if the banner looks like you want it to, and if you think it's too yellow (haha) or the image I chose should be changed, please just let me know!
Also, to double check: you do not mention France in your list of countries, is this correct? Ciell (talk) 14:30, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Adélaïde Calais WMFr: could you please also provide a link showing that you notified the frwiki community of your CN request, allowing others to comment on this request (e.g. in case there are objections to the banner). Thanks! Ciell (talk) 19:20, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Banners - Hello, @DerHexer:! How are you? Here's the information for the Mais Diversidade campaign banner.

The overall design could mirror that of the Mais Povos originários banner, which looked great! There are just a few changes:

Instead of the logo, we'd like to use an image of the wikicontest's prizes, which you can find here. Do you think it's possible? Additionally, the background color should be changed to #8153D6.

Font: Open Sans Light, size 24, black.

Text2: Inscreva-se aqui. Font: Open Sans Light, size 29, white. For the box, the color is #5ED5ED.

As you probably noticed, the instructions are pretty similar to the Mais Mulheres' banner, just different background colors, image and text. Maybe using that one as reference when it's done would make the work easier! Again, thanks a lot for the help! If you have any doubts, please contact me.

See CentralNotice/Request/Mais Mulheres em Teoria da História na Wiki/2024#Discussion, the requested font size / amount of text / image size is likely too large for this request as well. --Johannnes89 (talk) 14:44, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @Johannnes89:. Can we shorten the main sentence to “Participe do Concurso de Edição Mais Diversidade em Teoria da História na Wiki e contribua para visibilizar conhecimentos dissidentes.” What do you think? I'd like to point out that we're also going to include a MetaWiki landing page in this banner, but we haven't created the page yet. I'll post it here soon. Thanks in advance. @Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+): yes of course we can change the landing page link at a later point. I've created the campaign [23] and the preliminary banner [24] (Preview [25]). Please review everything to make sure it's alright. Looking at the mobile version [26] on a smartphone I think this banner should use less text. --Johannnes89 (talk) 06:25, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

<a id="challenge-banner-link"\n\t href="https://www.wikimedia.de/wikipedia-challenge?campaign='+s(typeof(a=null!=(a=f(n,"campaign")||(null!=e?f(e,"campaign"):e))?a:c)==u?a.call(l,{name:"campaign",hash:{},data:o,loc:{start:{line:8,column:64},end:{line:8,column:78}}}):a)+'">
<a id="challenge-banner-link"\n\t href="https://www.wikimedia.de/wikipedia-challenge"> -> https://www.wikimedia.de/wikipedia-challenge/

Central Notice admin comments

[edit]
  • @Kai Nissen (WMDE), Merle von Wittich (WMDE), and Elisabeth Mandl (WMDE): I'm really angry about this campaign, in particular that it is disturbing my well-known vacation right now, both as a volunteer and staff member. Why was there a need for that? Why now? Why so rushed? Why in such a poor way? — More or less everything was done wrong:
    • The campaign was requested not in the needed time, 10 days in advance. Why? Community CentralNotice admins could have double-checked for such things like broken links which we have now experienced.
    • The campaign duration is much longer than most other campaign, 4 weeks instead of 2 weeks. Why? And why at full display? The cycle also seems odd to me, 5 displays but reset after 0 seconds; is that correct?
    • The campaign was not aligned with other campaigns in the same window (the problem with the lack in CNR has already been mentioned): As of now, KulTour digital is targeting the very same people. That campaign was requested long before your own campaign: request page. @Christoph Jackel (WMDE): for that reason. Don't you talk between different teams when you intend to run campaign?
    • The campaign was targeting users not only in Germany but also in Austria, Switzerland (and South Tyrol; not set, neither is Commons set as requested). Have WMAT and WMCH been involved? @Raimund Liebert (WMAT), Manfred Werner (WMAT), Claudia.Garad, Lantus (WMCH), and Lantus:, please check that and comment plus (dis)approve.
    • It doesn't seem that local community has been informed about it beforehand. This is standard for campaigns, especially with such wide reach and long duration. Can you provide a link to the WMDE community portal, Kurier or other communication places in dewiki? According to this discussion, there are also community concerns which should have been addressed beforehand.
    • The banner itself is very big, on mobile it covers more than half of the screen. Is this necessary? Why is such an invasive display needed for something WMDE- and not community-related?
    • Most problematically, the landing page's main purpose seems to be the collection of email addresses. While linking to external pages outside of Wikimedia projects seems to be accepted when it's a Wikimedia affiliate handled page (guidelines about this might be coming soon), it's absolutely not acceptable to collect e-mail addresses like this in the EU from anonymous users (as this campaign is set now). All the needed GDPR-related extra information about the duration of saves, possibilities for deletions, etc. are not mentioned in the linked form. It is not sufficient to have a link called “Datenschutz” that would tackle these issues.
  • Therefore, I have disabled the campaign so that it can be set up appropriately next month. CC @Johannnes89 and Astinson (WMF):DerHexer (Talk) and Martin Rulsch (WMDE) (talk) 21:48, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @DerHexer,
    regarding your points:
    • The CN request was indeed very last minute – and my bad that I only did at the request and added it to the calender like Johannnes89 mentioned above. Regarding the timelime: This campaign is quite important for us and as we are targeting not-logged in users we do want to as much distance as possible from the fall campaign.
    • The plan for the duration here was that we would monitor the impressions on the landing page and shorten the campaign accordingly if the results were “no longer worth the price” of a CN campaign.
    • WMAT and WMCH were informed by @Elisabeth Mandl (WMDE)
    • The Kultour does not target the same people as we are talking about logged in and not logged in users. And actually this was another reason to rush the campaign because next to the fall campaign we were also anticipating WLM CNs.
    • The banner is the same banner as of 2020. For the sake of costs (like financial and time) the banners were reused.
    • This is actually a point that happened too late: we only created a notice in the WMDE community portal at the start of the campaign. We consistently monitored the Kurier at the start of the campaign and reacted immediately, including adapting the landing page within a very short time. In the Kurier discussion, I don't actually see any criticized points that would have influenced the campaign beforehand. Not the point here, but fortunately we are also getting positive feedback on the content of the emails from community members who comment in the Kurier.
So I would ask you - especially with regard to targeting and the upcoming CN campaigns that address these groups - to restart the campaign asap. Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 08:51, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @DerHexer,
    • Merle has already addressed most of the points. I'd like to add a few additional comments.
    • I was a bit surprised that you wanted to be involved during your vacation. Unfortunately, we were only able to submit the request on the 7th, and Merle informed you on the 8th that there was nothing for you as admins to handle. We viewed it as a positive development that we could rely on WMDE resources at this point.
    • Due to your concerns about data protection, I consulted with the relevant colleagues. Our GDPR officers have discussed this exact topic with legal experts, particularly regarding data collection through forms. It was confirmed that at WMDE, we are doing more than what is legally required, which is very important to us. It would already be sufficient to simply reference WMDE’s data protection policy. In addition, we provide a link to ZOHO’s privacy policy, and WMDE’s is listed directly below.
    • Regarding data deletion periods, there are no specific requirements since we have a "legitimate interest" in the data. The tool we use, ZOHO Europe, hosts the data on servers within the EU, which was a key factor in our selection process. The purpose of this page is to collect email addresses for the 30-day newsletter that users sign up for. However, this is not about indiscriminate data collection. The email addresses and corresponding names or pseudonyms are stored exclusively in the mailing list and are not added to a central contact list at WMDE. We’ve even implemented a double opt-in process to ensure users can confirm their subscription again. The form itself has not changed in the last four years, only the tool we are using.
    • In summary, we are operating at the minimal necessary level of data collection required to send a newsletter. If you have any further questions or concerns after your vacation, we can discuss them with the GDPR officers.
    • Since we cannot afford to pause the campaign for too long (to avoid re-targeting the same audiences who have already seen the banners and to prevent overlapping with the autumn campaign), I kindly ask you to reactivate the banners as soon as possible. We've seen excellent results in the first few days, and this is a fantastic opportunity to inform people about the wiki projects and encourage their participation. Surely, this aligns with all of our interests.-Elisabeth Mandl (WMDE) (talk) 14:12, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the concerns have been met, especially that the dewiki discussions show community approval and that there's currently no banner campaign interfering with yours. GDPR compliance seems alright to me as well, but Martin is right that we need someone from the foundation to approve the landing page, similar to the required approval for fundraising and survey banners.
@TAndic (WMF) and JBrungs (WMF): is this landing page by WMDE (asking people to sign up for a newsletter to learn more about Wikipedia) fine for you? Johannnes89 (talk) 18:08, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Johannnes89 for the ping, and all for the thorough discussion to meet concerns - I'm glad to see the thought put into the GDPR, as I would have asked similarly to make sure this is being considered.
Looks good on the WMF side :) - TAndic (WMF) (talk) 12:34, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The dates might still change, that's why this hasn't been added to the CN calendar yet. We can manage campaign & banners ourselves. Priority will be low (banner will only show after other banners running at the same time have already been shown). --Johannes Richter (WMDE) (talk) 08:03, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

International campaign [37], banner [38], preview [39]. De campaign [40], banner [41], preview [42] --Johannnes89 (talk) 08:29, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Given the previous debates stated in CentralNotice/Request/Deactivate almost all banners for Catalan Wikipedia and that the proposal was even communicated later in the Village Pumps than the activation of the banner (see see the topic here; apart from unresolved aspects yet), I kindly ask to remove ca.wiki sites from this CentralNotice request, @Johannes Richter (WMDE) and Johannnes89:. Thank you. Xavier Dengra (MESSAGES) 14:56, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Xavier Dengra I'm sorry, my mistake, I deactivated the banner for all ca-projects (I realize that I should check a couple of other international banners as well, was just about to include ca in the upcoming WMF board election banner as well, thanks for the reminder!). • @EPorto (WMB): Thank you for the good preparation! I've created the campaign and banner (preview). I'm ready to enable the campaign as soon as you approve it (please ping me). The banner looked pretty big on my mobile test (partly because of some empty space under the logo); you may want to check that, but it's good enough to be enabled, of course. Hi @RamzyM (WMF), I've created the campaign and banner for you in time to do all the needed translations. Looking at the banner, you may want to spice up the language a bit? The sixth edition of Wiki Loves Sport (July 17th - September 22th) is organized to improve and extend content related to diversity in sport in the Wikimedia projects, and for this year event it covers in particular:

  • Euro Games Vienna (from 17 to 20 July).
  • Paris 2024 Olympic games (from 26 July to 11 August).
  • Paris 2024 Paralympic games (from 28 August to 8 September) and other.

Given the gaps which is our topic of interest, the campaign is mainly focused on content concerning missing or underrepresented groups in sport (so a special focus on women's sport, LGBTQIA+ communities, para athletics, indigeneous and minorities etc), but as Wikimedians, we appreciate any sports-related content in any language you want to add.

Seeing the affiliate's goal of increasing the diversity, whoever writes +5 articles about female & non-binary athletes and/or binary & non-binary para-athletes, will receive a barnstar and a digital certificate from the main organizer WikiDonne.

Kannst du bitte nochmals checken. lg --Christian Philipp (WMAT) (talk) 07:39, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Danke dir @Christian Philipp (WMAT), nun funktioniert es [51]. Johannnes89 (talk) 15:05, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Christian Philipp (WMAT) done [52]. Die Kampagne ist mit Start am 01.07. aktiviert. Johannnes89 (talk) 18:32, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We'd like to continue the campaign from last year (request). The banner will only be running for two days before the first Wednesday of each month, and will be targeted to users with less than 100 edits. Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 08:24, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DerHexer you handled this last year right? Do you have time to coordinate again? Ciell (talk) 18:51, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, Jon organized it himself. I hope that he will do it for this year again. ;) And as far as I know, they want to reuse the campaign of last year. —DerHexer (Talk) 19:13, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, missed these messages. Yes, I can handle it myself. :-) Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 15:33, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
