Sorry, I didn't mean to remove those. The name given to that person at birth wrong? It does not contain anything wrong. Please help remove this block in the creation of articles.

I'd really like to see this issue resolved in a positive way. Excessively long usernames

Back in the dark ages before SUL unification, MediaWiki software limited usernames to 64 characters. In addition to that, many wikis had their own even-stricter limits (typically 40 characters). Now, however, due to SUL unification, the only limit is the new MediaWiki limit of 85 characters (which was chosen for technical reasons). Thus it is now possible for people to register new usernames like:
User:A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet morning
This is not just an aesthetic issue, but also a practical one, as excessively long usernames make it more difficult for reusers to properly credit the authors of articles. Also, on the Japanese Wikipedia, vandals have been creating usernames with defamatory statements against people (since you can easily fit a couple sentences in a username now) and vandalizing articles with them (according to a private email I received from an administrator there).

I would like to propose adding a global maximum length limit of 50 characters for new usernames. Here is an example of a hypothetical 50 character username:
User:My username is 50 characters and I am fine with it
This would be done by adding the following filter: .{50,} <newaccountonly>

Assuming the latter, a new 50-character limit would affect primarily names using 1-byte characters (≈ Latin alphabet). Atatürk

Due to a certain Turkish law, the name “Atatürk” and names containing “Atatürk”/“atatürk” as a substring may not be used as part of Turkish personal names. The only exception is Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, but he died many decades ago. Therefore, we should reflect this in the title blacklist by adding

German word for swastika

Display in non-english Wikis

There is a "strange behaviour" in non-english wikis when an article with a globally blocked lemma should be created. I take Javad Ramezani as example; that's the context where the problem first occurred. When trying to create an article with that lemma the "error" is displayed in quite different ways: in the english WP the information is quite good, in the italian WP it is very short, in the french WP there is a strange looking block-string but also an understandable explanation, but in the german WP there is only a strange looking block-string that is ununderstandable. So the question and proposal is two things: ... a) the block-string should always be something understandable. This is IMHO a local issue at dewiki. The system messages

I'm not sure if it's really a de-wiki-only problem. It really seems to! The main thing is that local wiki (any language) can get an understandable error messages. But as seen above that "rude string" is no understandable message; id does not give ANY information to trace down the problem to anything else. The aim to circumvent that problem must be that in the list of non-allowed strings there must be a "human understandable string" (it does not necessarily have to be machine-understandable). So the used string in the error message ought might not to be the string itself (the rude one), but the title and a reference to here. The message then would look like: A page with the title $1 cannot be created because the title name is colliding with one of the strings mentioned under $2 as they are gobally blocked (and set link to here). $2 should not be the blocked string itself (that might be "rude"), but the title of the blocked string list (what is behind the #) that usually is not "rude". --ProloSozz (talk) 15:49, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Year titles on admin-less wikis?

For years now, at least one IP editor (working under many different IP addresses) has been adding essentially empty "year stubs" to wiki after wiki, simply to push those wikis past milestones announced at Wikimedia News. I'm wondering whether we should adopt a general policy that local title blacklists should be created at "small wikis" (say, wikis under 5,000 articles that lack a local admin) to prevent the creation of articles with titles consisting solely of numbers, or numbers preceded or followed immediately by non-whitespace characters (which in some languages indicates a year or decade or century). Please remove .*affordable.* <antispoof> from the blacklist (or replace it with something that more narrowly targets whatever it's meant to stop). This blacklist blocks 1.5k text documents from being transcribed on Wikisource

All 1.5k files in c:Category:Media contributed by Józef Piłsudski Institute of America trigger .*1[ \-]\d{3}[ \-]\d{3}[ \-]\d{3}.* in line 261, which seems custom made for matching accession numbers used in the filenames. All those documents are meant to be transcribed on wikisource. They even have Transcribe button, which is now broken since one can not create new page on wikisource which is derived from the name of those files. Can we remove or change this filter so it does not match files in this category. Other thing to do would be whitelist 701-001-XXX-XXX and 701-007-XXX-XXX (where X is a digit) which at the moment are the only accession numbers used. Gross usernames

I would like to request that usernames containing the words "poop", "lol" and "troll" be added to this list, not so much because they are inherently offensive or disruptive but because those who create them always intend to use these accounts for vandalism. Combination of ß and swastika

Firstly, the swastika is stigmatized throughout the German-speaking area. Secondly, the letter ß is only used in the German language, in the transcription of German dialects, in German phonetic transcriptions of other languages, and in the German transcription of non-Latin-script languages. Thirdly, two of the three major German-speaking countries have anti-swastika laws, which are also used to suppress other symbols of Nazi or other unconstitutional organisations. Fourthly, the letter ß is no longer used in the third major German-speaking country. Fifthly, apparently neither the letter ß nor CJK swastikas are used in any namespace prefix in any Wikimedia project. Therefore, we should reflect this in the title blacklist by adding

We can't block from anyone from accessing any link on the Internet. What projects can do is to block the addittion of some domains to the pages of the projects, but nothing else.
