Newsreader to remix BBC News tune for drum and bass set

Ros Atkins on BBC NEWS

Festival-goers watching newsreader Ros Atkins’ drum and bass set will hear a very familiar tune during his performance.

The broadcaster is preparing to entertain the Glastonbury masses on the Stonebridge Bar stage tomorrow on Saturday afternoon, swapping his day job for a DJ set.

Many have called for Atkins, 50, to play the iconic BBC News theme tune and it looks like it might just become a reality after he interviewed the composer.

‘I messaged him a couple of days later, and I said “You can say no to this of course but would you be open to us looking at a remix of your theme” and he just said straight away “Yeah, that’s great”’,’ Atkins told BBC Radio 6 Music.

‘So before I knew it, I was on a WhatsApp group with me, David Lowe, the composer of the BBC News theme, and Chrissy Chris, drum and bass heavyweight, and the three of us started plotting out what we could do.’

We can’t wait to see what they’ve cooked up tomorrow!

Brian Cox, the beloved physicist, appeared on stage at Glastonbury to perform with D:Ream.

While this might seem like a bit of a mad side gig for the scientist, Brian was actually a keyboardist for the band before he found fame as a scientific broadcaster.

Brian performed in the band from 1993 to 1997 while he was working towards his PhD.

The physicist joined them at the Glade at Glastonbury to perform their hit 1994 tune, Things Can Only Get Better – popularised by the 1997 Labour campaign.

Our reporter on the ground informed us that the piece was a success and the crowd did indeed keep their mouths firmly shut.

The piece was described as ‘calm, incredibly quiet’ and ‘almost eerie.’ She added: ‘People who did whisper immediately got death stares.’

‘The importance of voting next week – I don’t blame you for being ambivalent about that but it’s still really important.

‘And thirdly – maybe it’s time we stopped putting octogenarians in charge of the whole world?’

He joined the band for a couple of songs on the Other Stage, performances which were also met with huge applause from fans.

Our reporter on the ground revealed that many fans were forced to turn around and head to other performances when they realised how busy the venue was.

This was a surprise for the band as Keisha commented: ‘We were backstage asking management, “are people there?” we wasn’t sure so thank you so much for coming out.’

The thirteen-person band from South Korea, who sold more than 10million albums last year, took to Pyramid Stage on Friday to debut their band on the coveted Worthy Farm festival stage.

They are the first-ever K-pop group to perform on the main stage in the festival’s over 50-year history.

Thousands have gathered to support the band as they play through their beloved discography which includes hits such as Super, HOT and SOS.

‘There’s a great sense of responsibility,’ Choi Seungcheol, also known as the band leader S Coups, told the BBC in the lead-up.

‘We’ll keep coming back to that feeling and do our best to prepare, so that we can blow everybody away… Not just our fans, but every other member of the audience.’

The band first formed in 2015 and is called Seventeen because there are 13 members, three groups within the team and one group -the numbers together add to 17.

Their FML EP was the biggest-selling record of 2023 and won album of the year at the Asian Music Awards.

The Mercury prize nominee performed on Glastonbury’s iconic stage on Friday to a huge live crowd as well as to those streaming the set live on the BBC at home.

The neo-soul singer, who dropped her latest single Time earlier this week, treated the audience to a live performance of the new song.

Towards the end of the set, she thanked Glastonbury fans for their roaring support, and also dedicated her final song to her grandmother.

Olivia said: ‘I’ll try not to cry with the next one, the next song is about my granny, my grandmother.’

Pointing to the picture of her grandmother that she proudly wore in a heart on her top, the star went on: ‘She came to this country when she was 18, never been on a plane before and decided to change her life.

‘And she had my mum quite young and my mum had me and I’m a product of her bravery and I would not be standing here if she hadn’t done that.’

She then praised the Windrush generation and those brave enough to move, before shouting out ‘hi’ to her granny watching from her home.

The singer then wiped away tears and commented on ‘what a beautiful day’ it was before she played her last song, Dive.

Touchingly, the Brit nominee also dedicated the song Carmen on her latest album, Messy, to her grandmother as well.

Paloma Faith pulls out of gig due to health issues before Glastonbury 2024 performance

Paloma Faith

Singer Paloma Faith has told fans she is ‘incredibly upset and disappointed’ to cancel her show taking place in Southhampton tonight.

In a post on her Instagram story earlier today the artist wrote: ‘After suffering from exhaustion and catching various illnesses from my kids, my voice has been severely affected and my range is compromised.’

After seeking advice from medical professionals the Only Love Can Hurt Like This hitmaker said she is now on vocal rest. She extended her apologies to everyone who had bought tickets and added she was ‘gutted’ she won’t be dancing with them tonight.

The sudden cancellation doesn’t bode well for her planned performance on the Glastonbury Pyramid Stage this Sunday from 13:45 to 14:45, before Shania Twain takes the stage for her Legends slot.

There is currently no update from Paloma as to whether her Glastonbury set will be affected by her latest health hit.

Olivia Dean is taking to Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage on Friday, but who is the singer considered to be one of the UK’s most promising stars?

Whether Olivia is new to your playlist or a longstanding favourite, she’s no stranger to the music industry and, in her almost decade-long career, has sold out a European tour, collaborated with one the UK’s most recognisable drum and bass bands, Rudimental and become a Chanel ambassador.

The North London star, 25, previously travelled around the country performing in a custom yellow van and by 2021, she was making waves in the industry.

As well as being dubbed breakthrough artist of the year by Amazon, she released her single Be My Own Boyfriend at the age of 21.

Amid all the rumours of ‘surprise sets’ including Kings of Leon and Kasabian, one boyband’s name has been thrown into the mix.

According to speculation on social media and on site, fans are hoping and praying for none other than Harry Styles to make an appearance during Shania Twain’s Legends slot.

In fact, a private jet has even been spotted in the sky…

And the duo did surprise us all at Coachella when the country star brought out the Watermelon Sugar singer for the collaboration of all our dreams.

Fans are starting to convince themselves, with Becci writing on X: ‘Anyone else hoping that Harry Styles will turn up at Glastonbury this weekend as a special guest for Shania Twains set??’

Megan added: ‘So if you saw Coachella a while back, @Harry_Styles brought out @ShaniaTwain for an incredible surprise! I wonder if the same will happen this year at @glastonbury It would be super cool if it did!’

While the Coachella gig seemed like a huge surprise to some, others will be aware that the pair go way back, with the That Don’t Impress Me Much singer expressing how much she admired the One Direction band member a few years back in a clip that resurfaced on social media.

During a 2020 appearance on This Morning, Phillip Schofield asked Shania – who was speaking to him and Holly Willoughby via video chat – whether there was any possibility of a collaboration with Harry.

‘Definitely. We text each other off and on about music and toying with the idea of doing something together so I think we’ll hold each other to that,’ she replied.

‘You can count on it, I’m gonna hold him to it,’ the musician added.

How much are Glastonbury headliners paid?

The likes of Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA are headlining Glastonbury this weekend, one of the biggest events in the music calendar.

But how much will they be paid for gigs at the world-renowned event?

Lyle Bignon, a music consultant specialising in live music venues and festivals, told Metro.co.uk in 2023: ‘Glastonbury headliners can expect to pick up performance fees of anywhere between £35,000 and £300,000 – depending on their profile.

‘The likes of Elton John and Guns N’ Roses [who performed in 2023], who have decades of global fame behind them, can likely command higher prices running into the £250,000+ range.’

Not too shabby, but certainly not the seven-figure sum that’s often rumoured.

Calvin Harris is rumoured to be joining headliner Dua Lipa at Glastonbury tonight for her headline slot.

The superstar DJ, 40, is said to be staying at the swanky Babington House, which is just down the road from Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset.

It’s claimed he’s hiding out there before potentially heading to the site in style, via a chopper, to join his One Kiss collaborator, 28, on the Pyramid Stage.

A source told The Sun: ‘It seems Calvin is going to be coming out with Dua as one of her surprise guests tonight.

‘He is staying at Babington House, a really lovely hotel where loads of celebrities stay before they come to Glastonbury.

‘It is likely he will be flying in later on a helicopter before coming out to join her on stage for One Kiss.’

They went on to add that Dua has ‘a huge amount of respect for Calvin and that track is one of her best hits’.

The Houdini hitmaker is also rumoured to have invited Girls Just Wanna Have Fun icon Cyndi Lauper, 71, to join her for a duet, as she is also playing on Saturday.

It’s also been whispered that the singer is planning a spectacular moving stage set.

A source told the outlet: ‘Dua is the most pop focused headliner Glastonbury have had in years and she is pulling out all the stops to impress.

‘She knows how to put on a big show, and she is planning to bring all of that to Worthy Farm.’

Among the spectacle that fans will see tonight is rumoured to be a dance troupe performing elaborate choreography and a stage ‘inspired’ by the moving platforms Kylie Minogue had for her headline slot back in 2019.

Dua herself has made no secret of the amount of time she has spent thinking about her performance.

Speaking to the BBC, Dua shared: ‘I think about it all the time.

’50 per cent of my thoughts go to Glastonbury, then the rest are for everyday tasks.’

Emily Eavis expects Glastonbury crowd to ’embrace’ seven minutes of silence

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

Emily Eavis is confident that Glastonbury’s crowd will embrace an artist’s request for seven minutes of silence at one of the world’s biggest musical festivals on Friday evening.

The festival boss called Serbian visual artist Marina Abramović’s piece, which will take place on the Pyramid Stage at 5:55pm today, ‘an amazing, ambitious thing to do’.

Abramović has described her plan as ‘terrifying’, acknowledging that it’s one of the most challenging moments of her prestigious career.

The world-famous artist will be asking the crowd of up to possibly 200,000 people to reflect on the current state of the world, and what she calls ‘a really dark moment in human history’.

‘She’s going for a seven-minute silence, which is an amazing, ambitious thing to do,’ said Emily on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show this morning on BBC Radio 2.

‘And I really think the crowd are going to embrace it, the crowd before [PJ] Harvey.’

‘She’s really up for it – we’ve got a gong in especially. I think it will be [really powerful] – it’s all about peace and unity and love and all these amazing messages.’

Emily Eavis insists there are ‘no big surprises’ at Glastonbury 2024

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis has told festivalgoers that there will be ‘no surprises’ at this year’s event.

This comes after rumours of everything from a secret set at an intimate venue from headliners Coldplay to talk of Girls Aloud, The Killers, Kasabian or even Kings Of Leon all dropping by, thanks to gaps in their schedules.

‘There’s no big surprises as well, I just want to say that, in case you’re expecting something else coming later that’s been rumoured,’ she clarified to Zoe Ball on her BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Friday morning.

‘It’s probably not true,’ the festival boss continued.

‘We’ve got all these amazing things! Who needs more? Let’s not be greedy.’

Girls Aloud have been considered favourites for a surprise appearance as they have time off from their reunion tour to theoretically come to Glastonbury, while Kings Of Leon are in the UK anyway for their British Summer Time show on Sunday.

Some ambitious fans were even keeping their fingers crossed for Taylor Swift, who is making her way around the country on her Eras Tour, so perhaps that rumour was the one Emily was especially keen to dispel, to avoid disappointment?

Of course, she could just be keeping things quiet as it was the Foo Fighters who poped in to play a few songs in 2023, with past secret sets also coming from the likes of Lady Gaga, Pulp, Mumford and Sons, and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

Shocking cost of water at Glastonbury revealed

It’s not just food and drink prices that are outrageous this year at Glastonbury, but festival-goers are also fuming over the price of water.

For those who have forgotten refillable bottles in their tent, a 330ml can is £2.50.

Meanwhile, a ‘2024 Glastonbury Water Bottle’ is £7.50.

@Frazer_Dury fumed on X: ‘£2.50 for a can of water is criminal.’

‘Glad they prioritised people’s Health with £7.50 bottles of water. Criminal,’ @jedimonkey1973 added.

@FakeGlennMiller commented: ‘Some of those prices are insane. 43 quid for a bottle of wine! You can buy a quality vintage for that money.’

‘No cost of living crisis there….’ @R_de_Gerber said.

Glastonbury decision on broadcasting Euros 2024 football tournament after clash

Glastonbury have decided it will not be broadcasting the Euro 2024 football tournament, with England set to face Slovakia in the last 16 at 5pm on Sunday.

That means there’s a clash with Shania Twain playing in the Legends slot, as she kicks off at 3.45pm up until 5pm, with Janelle Monae and Burna Boy taking to the Pyramid Stage later that evening, while Two Door Cinema Club on the Other Stage.

Eavis said the festival set up a screen to watch fixtures during the World Cup tournament in 1998, but times have changed.

‘We used to have a screen here as no-one had any means of finding out what even the result was because we were so cut off from the outside,’ she said.

‘Now obviously, everyone’s connected and I think you know it’s a music festival.

‘I’m sure if people want to see it enough they can check for results or whatever on their phones.

‘But hopefully I’m encouraging people to put their phones away and and forget about the outside world.’

Cyndi Lauper on Glastonbury: I never used to play festivals when I was famous

Up Next

Cyndi Lauper said at the height of her fame, she never got a chance to play festivals.

The American singer, known for a range of 1980s hits including Girls Just Want To Have Fun, True Colours, Time After Time and All Through The Night, will play the main stage at the Worthy Farm festival on Saturday.

Speaking about performing at Glastonbury in 2016, Lauper told BBC Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show: ‘I think it was really kind of great and fun and at that point it was raining and I was very happy at the point we had a tent… so everybody was dry and it was fun.

‘I never got a chance to play festivals like when I was famous, I guess I’m still famous… but you know what I mean.

‘In the beginning, because there were no sound checks so it was like: “Oh no there was no sound checks, you can’t do that,” so I never did it.’

Cyndi Lauper

Cyndi added that she has a ‘fabulous outfit’ in mind for her slot, but ‘you never know for the weather’, so she might change it, or her hair colour.

When asked about the amount of people who will see her at Pyramid Stage, she said: ‘Should I have stage fright?’

She added: ‘When I did the wall in Berlin in 1990, I started crying because that was really big, I mean really, really big, and I had to tell myself: “I was professional and I could do this,” I did.’

Her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour is coming to the UK and Europe in February next year.

She said that she wants it to ‘say goodbye in style’.

Fans of Sir Michael Eavis showed off their love for him with a flashmob dedicated to the Glastonbury founder.

Yesterday, the 88-year-old took to the stage with his bands, delighting fans as he gave a rendition of Frank Sinatra’s My Way.

He earned a thundering round of applause after crooning Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley.

Fans later showed the founder how much they loved him, dressing up as him with his ‘cool beard’ and ‘awesome bald head’.

Paloma Faith feels ready to ‘combust’ with excitement ahead of her Glastonbury performance.

The 42-year-old singer is preparing for her first performance at the world-famous festival in eight years, and Paloma can’t wait to take to the stage.

The music star – who plays the Pyramid Stage on Sunday – told The Sun newspaper: ‘I’ve not done Glastonbury in eight years and I feel so excited. I am almost going to combust. It is one of the absolute best memories of my career, playing at Glastonbury.

‘I’m over-the-moon excited for it. This time I am going to try and stay.

‘I didn’t get to last time, I was so rushed, but this time I am going to try. I really want to see SZA perform, I love her.’

Paloma also teased what fans should expect from her performance.

She shared: ‘I will do some of the hits and a mix of the new album.

‘I feel like the new album is really full to the brim of fun songs to play, and I’ve got a new person in my band who is an on-stage producer who is sending me videos of himself playing about with loops and stuff which makes it really exciting.

‘I think it’s going to go off.’

Meanwhile, Paloma has hit out at some of the Glastonbury VIPs, accusing them of being “entitled”.

The singer said: ‘It is weird – when I am in the VIP area I get hassled left right and centre.

‘Everyone in there feels entitled but in the normal bit everyone leaves me alone and they just want to talk to me like a normal person.

‘In the VIP area they are like, “We deserve this”, but they are not giving me the money that they spent on the ticket.’

Latest Glastonbury 2024 weather forecast

Yesterday saw a little bit of rain before the sun peeked out again, but sadly it looks like the end of the blistering high temperatures and bright blue skies.

Glastonbury certainly won’t become the mudfest it’s infamously known as this year, thankfully, but temps won’t stay as high as they’ve been.

According to the Met Office, the temperature from Friday to Sunday will barely push above 20°C.

In fact, today will mainly see cloudy skies and highs of 18°C, but with low chances of rain.

A ‘windfluencer’ – who is promoting sustainability by dressing up as a wind turbine – has given a rather unique interview on Sky News.

As the broadcaster explained, there were few people up early enough to interview on Friday morning, but Killah Jules was ready to show off her look, and singing skills.

At one point, the journalist attempted to get the guest’s wind turbine to spin, before the activist demonstrated her energy-related cover of Destiny’s Child.

When does Glastonbury TV coverage start?

If you were one of the unfortunate Glastonbury fans who didn’t manage to grab tickets for the festival this year, you can still watch from the comfort of your own home.

The BBC have promised more coverage of the festival than ever before, with a whopping six weeks of content running on BBC Sounds, BBC Radio, TV, and iPlayer.

There will also be two dedicated Glastonbury TV channels on BBC iPlayer; the Glastonbury Channel Live, which will stream performances 24/7 as they happen and can be found here, along with the newly launched Glastonbury Channel II, which will collate highlights from across the weekend.

The full Glastonbury TV schedule can be found here with coverage kicking off tonight at 7.30pm on BBC Two and iPlayer, and airing the Sugababes and Dua Lipa’s performances tonight amongst others.

Woman working at Glastonbury reveals staff perks

A volunteer working at the festival has shared the perks she gets during Glastonbury, and consider us impressed.

@stef_smith_af has been sharing her Glasto updates on TikTok, as she volunteers with a catering company.

Talking through her shift patterns on TikTok, Stef explained she gets one meal a day while working, access to the crew camping, gets to go to all the crew bars and use any of the access routes available to crew.

She also gets access to crew showers, revealing: ‘They’re a lot better than the ones in the general camping apparently.’

‘Loads of stuff is better, and in return for doing that, I get to enjoy the festival,’ she added.

Stef was particularly lucky, after failing to get tickets for the festival before her now-boss saw her TikToks and invited her to volunteer.

‘I’m not going to pass up an opportunity like that,’ she told her followers.

Glastonbury first almost saw ‘voter registration booths’ on site for the General Election

This year’s festival is taking place in the week before the General Election, which Emily Eavis acknowledged they have ‘never had’.

‘I feel a bit like we’ve stepped out of the election, even though it’s next week,’ she told PA.

‘We were working on having voter registration booths, but then the day moved.

‘It’s a big one for us, we’ve never had a pre-election festival.’

The General Election was announced by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on May 22, a month before Glastonbury, and will be taking place next Thursday, July 4.

Emily Eavis defends Glastonbury line-up as Dua Lipa readies to dazzle crowds

Up Next

Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis has defended the festival’s line-up amid criticism of there being a lack of rock bands as pop star Dua Lipa prepares to headline Friday’s music.

‘I think the line-up reflects what’s happening in the music world at the moment – there aren’t a lot of new rock acts to choose from if I’m honest,’ Eavis told the PA news agency.

‘Hopefully that will emerge again, my heyday was 1995 with Pulp and Oasis and Radiohead… and that was great but music changes all the time and right now this is where we’re at.

‘Every year, we’ve been criticised for being too rock, too grime, too hip hop, too pop… it’s just part of our year.

‘Generally it’s not from the public… everybody’s really happy and excited to be here.’

How much profit does Glastonbury make?

With more than 200,000 people taking to Worthy Farm for the festival, and spending a ‘criminal’ £6.50 for a pint and a further £9.50 for a toastie, it’s safe to say Glastonbury will be raking it in.

Despite the whopping cost of paying headliners, with Coldplay and Paul McCartney previously being paid approximately £200,000, according to reports, for their previous performances at the festival, huge profits in the past have reached seven figures.

When Michael Eavis founded Glastonbury Festival in 1970, he cited it as the ‘quickest’ way to clear his overdraft, and the first ticket to (what was then known as) the Pilton Pop, Folk and Blues Festival cost £1 – and included free camping and free milk from the dairy farm.

Things are a bit different these days, with tickets costing £355, however amount of overall profit the festival makes is a subject of some speculation.

In 2019,  the BBC reported that Glastonbury Festival Events maintained a cash buffer of £10.6 million – with reports that, in the year ending March 2018 (so pre-Covid), the company had made a post-tax profit of £1.43 million, and made charitable contributions of £2.1m.
