Photo contest Wiki Loves Public Space

Wiki Loves Public Space

In July and August 2017 we organised the photo contest Wiki Loves Public Space around modern buildings, public artworks, memorials and monuments. We organised this contest to use the momentum as this was in Belgium the first full summer in what we had Freedom of Panorama. Freedom of Panorama came into force on 15 July 2016 thanks to our efforts and the parliament members who took it up. To celebrate Freedom of Panorama, we organised this photo contest in what we finally could depict Belgium as it is seen every day.

On 20 July we also gave a lecture about Wikipedia and uploading in the public library of Ternat.

Due personal circumstances the award ceremony was delayed to February 2018. The winning photos of the photo contest were announced at the new year's event 2018 in Brussels.

Starting new GLAM partnerships

The first months of 2018 were dedicated to the contact with potential partners and the beginning of new projects. Two of them were signed with important Brazilian institutions, the Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library, linked to the University of São Paulo, and the National Historical Museum in Rio de Janeiro.

Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita e José Mindlin - BBM/USP

The Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita e José Mindlin was created in 2005, linked to the University of São Paulo. Its collection gathers about 32,2 thousand titles on Brazil, among works of literature, history, travelers' reports, historical manuscripts, documents, periodicals, maps, scientific books and iconography.

Since 2014 the Brazilian movement is using content from the BBM/USP, many books and pictures were uploaded to commons but with no formal partnership. In November we started a conversation with the institution and in December we started the partnership, selecting and organizing content, metadata and evaluating articles to apply the content, in January we started a pilot project to upload content to commons.

Until now, 268 files was uploaded/generated through a pilot project, 1200 files are ready for upload, 59 content improved (Wikipedia, Wikidata) and 48 images are in use (17.91%).

National Historical Museum of Brazil

At the beginning of 2018 we also started a partnership with the National Historical Museum of Brazil. Created in 1922, in an important architectural complex located in Guanabara Bay, the National Historical Museum contains a collection of over 250,000 items, including objects, documents and books.

GLAM 3D reconstruction project

The 3d reconstruction project also incorporated new images to commons. Based on the new file format accepted by commons we expanded our partnership with Cicero Moraes, uploading to commons many 3D objects of human body parts, 3D skulls and facial reconstructions and animal prothesis.

The first Bulgarian wikitown presented at an International Tourist Fair in Sofia

WikiBotevgrad - the first wikitown in Bulgaria on the International Tourism Fair "Holiday & SPA Expo" 2018.

From 14th to 16th February in Sofia the first Bulgarian WikiTown initiative was presented at the International Tourist Fair "Holiday & SPA Expo". WikiBotevgrad, which was a cooperative initiative between Wikimedians of Bulgaria User Group, Botevgrad Municipality, Historical Museum of Botevgrad and the "Ivan Vazov" Town Library, started in October 2017 with the aim to consolidate the local community and promote volunteering and contributions to Wikimedia on regional topics.

The motto of the Botevgrad town's booth and one of the main accents in their presentation was the first wikitown in Bulgaria. On the first day of the tourist fair, a presentation for WikiBotevgrad was presented to participants from all over the country - representatives of the tourism business, branch organizations and academic lecturers. The booth of Botevgrad Municipality was visited by many attendants, including the Minister of Tourism, lecturers from Sofia University, International Business School, University of Forestry - Sofia, New Bulgarian University, and others. A number of university lecturers have committed to promoting WikiBotevgrad among their students. At the same time, a tourist website was created for the Botevgrad Municipality, where the WikiBotevgrad logo has links to Wikipedia in articles about the tourist sites and settlements in the municipality.

During the Fair, WikiBotevgrad was nominated for the Innovation Project of the Year for Modern Technologies.

Since the start of the initiative in October 2017, over 90 articles have been created and expanded, mainly in Bulgarian Wikipedia, about places, cultural, historical and natural sites, personalities and events related to the town of Botevgrad and the 12 villages in the Municipality. In recent months, three edit-a-thons in the city library and a photomarathon in the Historical Museum were organized for the local community. In addition, more than 550 photos from over 50 participants have been uploaded, most of which contributed to Wikipedia for the first time. Soon, students from the two language centers in the city will help with translation of articles in English. In May 2018, when the initiative completes, QR codes to Wikipedia will be placed on relevant locations in Botevgrad and the surrounding villages.

The participation in the International Tourist Fair in February is not the first public presentation of the first Bulgarian wikitown: in the end of 2017, WikiBotevgrad was presented at the discussion forum "The Good Example to the West of Sofia" along with other good practices and innovative initiatives of the Botevgrad Municipality.

In the next months, WikiBotevgrad will be presented at two more tourism fairs in Bulgaria. The first one is the "Cultural Tourism" Fair in Veliko Tarnovo in April 2018, when the cultural and historical heritage of the municipality will be promoted. During the second event, the family memory and Weekend tourism in Rousse in late May 2018, the results of the accomplished project will be presented. We intend to present WikiBotevgrad at scientific conferences, and thematically related seminars and debates, too.

Editing with more librarians as we expanded #1Lib1Ref campaign

Edit-athon on February 23 with librarians

On Friday, February 23, a training session was held with 8 librarians. This #1Lib1ref session, the second of this kind in 2018, took place as the original period of #1Lib1ref campaign was expanded in Côte d'Ivoire until March 2018.

The edit-athon included an introduction to the Wikipedia and to the Wikimedia movement followed by rich discussions. One librarian who participated in a previous session also shared his view regarding how useful Wikipedia can be for a librarian. Shortly after, participants made their first edits during a more practical phase, improving articles related to Côte d'Ivoire in general, adding references when needed. The African Institut of Medias (Côte d'Ivoire), one of WCUG-CI partners, hosted the event.

Invitations to host future sessions

Amid these sessions, others GLAM institutions showed interest into hosting #1Lib1ref edit-athons. March will bear two session with librarians. The first one will happen on 8th March, at LARIT (a scientific laboratory specialized IT whose librarians attended January #1Lib1Ref edit-athon) and the second one on 9th March at the National Library of Côte d'Ivoire.

Finland's First Wikimedian in Residence

The first Wikimedian in Residence in Finland has started his work at the National Archives of Finland (Kansallisarkisto). Miku Malinen (or User:Lentokonefani) began his non-military service in the beginning of February and will continue until mid-December. His work will be focused on heraldry and will, in addition to Wikimedia-related tasks, include assisting in other heraldry projects and digitizing archive material.

During the year, Malinen will train the National Archives' personnel to use Wikipedia, edit Wikipedia articles on the Archives and heraldry, and perhaps work on heraldic categorization and coat of arms information on Wikidata. His main goal is to create a basis for cooperation between Wikimedians and the National Archives, so that the National Archives would be willing to keep sharing its material with Wikimedians in the future and create a Wikimedia culture within the Archives.

Wikimedia Finland will use Malinen's experiences to hopefully create opportunities for Wikimedians in Residence in other organizations in the future.

Hanna-Leena Paloposki at OKFi Open data day 2018-01-03 on how the National Gallery of Finland released 12000 artworks for free reuse.

The Finnish National Gallery, which contains Ateneum, Kiasma and Sinebrychoff art museums, opened 12,000 artworks under CC0 license. The metadata for their collection had already been under CC0, but now 12,000 images of their collection are also licensed with CC0. The images can be downloaded as lower resolution files from the National Gallery’s website and with a higher resolution from Europeana. The metadata can be queried using API or it can be downloaded as a file.

The National Gallery also made a presentation on the Open Data Day event by Open Knowledge Foundation, where they told about the background of the opening. It was very interesting to hear about how the opening of the collection started with small openings several years ago, for example by uploading architectural photos of the Kiasma building which were also used in Wikipedia edithatons at the time. This tradition continues on March 7 when there is an editathon at Sinebrychoff Art Museum where it’s possible to use the released images.

Open education week

CSCE windows at Story of Finland exhibition. One window frame is kept transparent and it frames the actual place of the event to the viewer.

Wikimedia Finland is collaborating with IT teachers and National museum of Finland in the Wikileap project which creates open materials for primary education. Wikileap held a presentation at Open Data Day about the open materials for basic education. At the event, there were also discussions on how to present the political decision systems. This resulted in at least one concrete action which is that we will store the presidents, ministers and parliament members of Finland to Wikidata using properties defined in Wikidata:WikiProject every politician.

As a part of the open education week, Teromakotero made a webinar on open education materials and next, we will continue the series of the events on March 14 with a workshop in the National Museum. In the workshop, we are finding methods to link the open content to museum’s permanent exhibition about Finland’s independence and vice versa. In practice, we are going to find items from the exhibition to use it as a topic in Wikileap content. For example, the CSCE convention has a rather good Wikipedia article and it is easy to extend it with other free content. A real-world convention was held at a building next to the museum and it can be seen from the space that is dedicated to CSCE in the exhibition. So in that place, students can get the idea where it actually happened and it is not just something which is in the books.

Environment editathon in Oulu

On 24 and 25 February 2018 there was an environment related edithaton in the Oulu City Library. Kulttuurinavigaattori made a presentation about Wikipedia and was the tutor at the event.

Closing the gender gap in Finland

In Finland, #WikiGap will take place 8th of May at the University of Helsinki´s Think Corner. Wikimedia Suomi organises the event together with the Swedish embassy in Helsinki and University of Helsinki's Think Corner. We are currently looking for partner organisations to participate in to the event, which is also open to registration. The aim is to create articles of prominent Finnish women in the fields of science, economy and politics.

Enjoy an exhibition and write about it

In February we focused on arts. About 20 Wikipedians came in the end of the month to the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal and took part in a special guided tour through the Édouard Manet exhibition. This was the third time we cooperated with the gallery. The format applied was the Wikipedian KulTour – the little sister of GLAM on Tour. It is easy to organize, attractive to volunteers living close to the site and gives good results. Until now already 17 new articles were written in the German Wikipedia, like this article on the painting Chez le père Lathuille, en plein air. It has become a little tradition, both to the museum and to the local Wikipedians as both benefit from the cooperation.


Boosting collaborations

The period of residence of the Wikipedian at the Istituto Centrale degli Archivi (ICAR) is ending. The results of the GLAM project will be presented in Rome, at Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, the 21th of March.

BEIC

The number of Wikipedia articles and other Wikimedia pages using images uploaded by BEIC (Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e cultura) has reached 15.000 pages in February. Images from BEIC were viewed 18,5 million times in the last month, on 360 wikis.

Wikimedia Italia

Wikimedia Italia hired a new staff member, Marta Erica Arosio, who will be responsible of the contacts with institutions. We expect that this new resource will help us to boost GLAM projects in Italy in the next years. Welcome Marta!


Startup of the WikiIndustry project

Startup of the WikiIndustry project

On 14th of February, started the WikiIndustry project whose principal goal is to make visits to industrial capacities and document the manufacture process in different industries as well as the final products. The project came up as an idea and closely resembles of the previous Wikiwine and the current Agroexpeditions projects, where several industrial plant were already visited, primarily wineries and food industry plants. This visit was organized by Македонец, Иван Ж and our longstanding contributor from Strumica Тиверополник who arranged the visits of production plants of the textile and wood industry. Dozens of images were photographed which in the next period will be uploaded and used for creation of articles on Wikipedias in support of this branches of the industry and economy.


Intern program for library students

Since 2015 Wikimedia Norge has run an intern program for library- and archive students from Oslo Metropolitan University welcoming two students a year for about 6 weeks. The National Library in Oslo also welcomes several students a year for internships. Building on the projects the students have done on different Wikimedia projects and experience we have on what makes an internship interesting and beneficial for both parties, Wikimedia Norge will together with The National Library be part of a new elective subject offered for library- and archive students starting August 2018.

The intern in January-February 2018, Anette Faksnes, worked on project to add items on Wikidata on Sami authors. She was the first intern to work with us on a Wikidata project. After her internship was over she wrote a great article for the Norwegian journal Bibliotekaren explaining why Wikidata is interesting for librarians.


WiR at The National Museums of World Culture

During the spring Statens museer för världskultur will host Axel Pettersson as a Wikipedian in Residence. The activities includes workshops and edit-a-thons for both staff and visitors, help with selection of collections and mapping prior to batch upload and data ingestion, stats and follow up of activities. During the spring Wikimedia Sweden will also help the museums with upload of some collections as a complement to the previous uploaded images of expeditions and excavations to Mexico, Cyprus and other parts of the world.


Scotland's Public Libraries move toward first edit-a-thons

  • The office staff at SLIC took part in a 1Lib1Ref edit-a-thon on Friday 2 February, with 6 editors making 39 edits on 10 pages.
  • The resident ran two half-day training sessions at Glasgow Caledonian University for Library staff, focusing on the use of Wikipedia as a teaching tool. 15 editors worked collaboratively to created 4 new articles: Orkney Library and Archive, Shetland Library, Lady Catherine Bruce of Clackmannan and Jess Smith (writer). It is hoped that this activity will mark the beginning of a longer term relationship with the organisation.
  • One of our partner library services made a presentation at the sector-wide "Digital Champions" meeting (coordinated by SLIC) about their involvement in the project so far; this resulted in a number of good leads including a presentation made to a potential new public library service partner in early March.
  • On Friday 23 February an edit-a-thon was held at the Scottish Poetry Library - hopefully the first of many - on "Lost Poets of Scotland". 10 editors created 4 new pages and 5 new draft pages. Help is welcomed in improving the latter so that they can be moved to mainspace, details can be found here.
  • A pre-edit-a-thon training session was held for new editors in Greenock, with our project partners Inverclyde Libraries. This event was extremely positive and bodes well for the edit-a-thon (taking place Wednesday 7 March) and for future activity.
  • SLIC & the WiR are currently hosting an Information & Library Studies Masters student from the University of Strathclyde, Jenny King. Jenny is working with a local history group based in Govan on an edit-a-thon which will take place at the end of March. This group have engaged with Wikimedia before and are keen to make this part of their ongoing work around Suffragettes & the history of the protest movement in Glasgow.

Oxford Wikidata project

Martin Poulter gave a seminar at the Oxford e-Research Centre (OeRC) on Wikidata. The audience were but mostly users of DBpedia rather than Wikidata. Slides are available on Commons or as a Powerpoint file on request. He has also been bulk uploading data from the China Biographical Database into Wikidata to assist with visualisations of Chinese history.l

Pattypan is a tool for uploading media files to Wikimedia Commons. Pattypan 18.02 was released in February, some of its new features includes:

  • New and improved logging and bug reporting workflow.
  • STL support.
  • The Map template is now predefined and included.

You can download the new version and view all the changes on Github. Bug reports and feature requests are very appreciated.

  • The Wikidata Query Service is an infinite source of amazing data and one of the best ways to explore and use Wikidata. (TweetsFactsAndQueries)
  • QuickStatements is a powerful tool that can edit or add Wikidata item en masse, via a text editor or importing a spreadsheet. (Éder Porto via Facebook)

  • DuplicateReferences gadget adds a link to copy references and add them to other statements on the same item. (PKM)
  • checkConstraints gadget adds notifications on the interface to easily notice the violation of constraints and help people fixing them (Léa)
  • Resolve authors lists scientific articles with the property author name string (P2093) and groups them on the basis of co-authors and topic, which helps to distinguish people referred to by identical name strings. (Daniel Mietchen)
  • The Wiki Loves Monuments map is powered by Wikidata. You can look for a city and find the monuments around. (Stefano Sabatini via Facebook)

GLAM news

  • The call for submissions for Wikimania (Cape Town, July 2018) is now open. Deadline is March 18th. Ideas of submissions related to Wikidata can be discussed here
  • New tool based on Wikidata: Random TV episodes
  • It's been possible for a while (but not previously reported here) to include Wikidata IDs in Wikivoyage listings, like this example edit. This is particularly relevant for GLAMs that are tourist attractions
  • There are now over 100,000 ORCID iDs in Wikidata.

Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons: community consultations

A proposal on how information can be stored on Wikimedia Commons in the future.

The project Structured Data on Commons is progressing well; in the upcoming time, the free media files on Wikimedia Commons will be converted to a structured and machine-readable format, so that they become easier to view, search, edit, organize and re-use, in many languages.

The most important changes to Wikimedia Commons will take place this year (yes, in 2018! You can check the roadmap for more detail). GLAMs are very important stakeholders for the 'new' Wikimedia Commons, and we need your input too! The best ways to stay up to date about the project:

Some news and updates

  1. A general community consultation on metadata placement in the 'new' structured data on Commons has concluded on March 1. Several GLAM volunteers and staff members have provided specific feedback on GLAM metadata - thank you! You can still add extra thoughts and insights to the page.
  2. We are still growing the GLAM focus group for Structured Commons. It is a group of GLAM staff around the world who are willing to advise and provide feedback regularly in the upcoming months and years. GLAM staff from Africa, Asia, the MENA region and Latin America would be especially welcome; feel free to invite people if you know they would be interested! More info can be obtained from Sandra at sandraf﹫wikimedia.org.

Feedback, examples and activities needed for Wikidata Lesson Plan and Query Service One Pager

As part of an ongoing collaboration with the Wikidata team at Wikimedia Deutschland to develop teaching materials that can help GLAM and other communities contribute to Wikidata, Astinson (WMF) (talk · contribs) has developed a lesson plan for teaching Wikidata workshops, and a one pager for helping teach the Wikidata Query service.

We are looking for feedback and contribution, specifically:

  • What is missing from the lesson plan and one-pager? What other additional materials would you like?
  • If you have taught Wikidata workshops before and find them successful, upload them to Commons or add to the section for presentations
    • Once you have uploaded or shared your presentations: Each section has a “Examples” header. Please link to sections of presentations which demonstrate that kind of teaching: we want future Wikidata workshop developers, to have plenty of examples.
  • If you have had participants in Wikidata workshops contribute content through specific activiteis, considering writing those activities at: the activities section
