Android Auto may be a phone app but it's absolutely meant to be experienced with an external display. Either via your car or by buying and using and aftermarket Android Auto display the experience is just much more fluid and safe. It still feels a bit stunted though and using Google assistant still isn't all that great an experience. Might even make you more angry than anything. But most importantly I wish third party apps would update their Android Auto component more often to match the phone.

When I'm in the car it is mostly great. I can search Pandora, maps, etc. easily. However, it disconnects at random times for no apparent reason. Also automatically turns on my wifi, even when not connected to my car causing me to automatically connect anytime it detects a wifi source that I have used before even though I have disabled automatic wifi. When I turned off the setting that makes it do that, it would no longer connect to the car. Irritating to have to keep turning of my wifi.

It's a great app. I love the different features I can use in the car, especially being able to switch between apps quickly. Like when I to go from a book to music without needing to pull out my phone. Only default is sometimes if I'm on the phone before getting in the car android auto doesn't automatically transfer the call to handsfree. I have to push the headset button a few times or put the call on speakerphone until it connects.
