The Copa do Brasil (English: Brazil Cup) is a knockout football competition played by 86 teams, representing all 26 Brazilian states plus the Federal District. The Copa do Brasil is an opportunity for teams from smaller states to play against the big teams and episodes of giant-killing have happened at a regular rate throughout the competition's history. It is currently sponsored by Continental AG and is thus currently known as the Copa Continental Pneus do Brasil for sponsorship reasons. It is the Brazilian domestic cup and the Brazilian equivalent of the FA Cup, Taça de Portugal, Copa del Rey, Coupe de France, Coppa Italia, DFB-Pokal, and Copa Argentina, among others.

From 2001 to 2012, the Copa do Brasil was played in the first half of the year and in those seasons, due to the busy schedule in the first half of the year in Brazil, teams playing in the Copa Libertadores de América were not allowed to participate in the Copa do Brasil in the same year.

Since 2013, the tournament has run from March to November. Teams that contest the Copa Libertadores de América join the Copa do Brasil directly in Round of 16. Also, the best 8 teams from the previous year's Campeonato Brasileiro Série A eliminated up to the third round qualify for Copa Sudamericana.

The Copa do Brasil 1999 was the 11th staging of the Copa do Brasil.

The competition started on January 28, 1999 and concluded on June 27, 1999 with the second leg of the final, held at the Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, in which Juventude lifted the trophy for the first time with a 0-0 draw with Botafogo.

Romário, of Flamengo, and Dejan Petković, of Vitória, with 7 goals each, were the competition's topscorers.

Format

The competition was disputed by 65 clubs in a knock-out format where all rounds were played over two legs and the away goals rule was used, with the exception of the preliminary match, which was played in a single match, and in the first two rounds if the away team won the first leg with an advantage of at least two goals, the second leg was not played and the club automatically qualified to the next round.

The 2016 Copa do Brasil will be the 28th edition of the Copa do Brasil football competition. The competition will be contested by 86 teams, either qualified through participitating their respective state championships (70), by the 2016 CBF ranking (10) or those qualified for 2015 Copa Libertadores (5) and the team with the best 2015 Série A record (excluding those qualified for 2016 Copa Libertadores). Those 6 clubs will enter the competition in the round of 16. The best six teams of the 2015 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A eliminated until the third round will qualify for the 2016 Copa Sudamericana.

Format

The competition is a single elimination knockout tournament featuring two-legged ties. In the first two rounds, if the away team wins the first match by 2 or more goals, it progresses straight to the next round avoiding the second leg. The away goals rule is also used in the Copa do Brasil, with the exception of finals. The winner qualifies for the 2017 Copa Libertadores.
