A barrel is one of several units of volume applied in various contexts; there are dry barrels, fluid barrels (such as the UK beer barrel and US beer barrel), oil barrels and so on. For historical reasons the volumes of some barrel units are roughly double the volumes of others; volumes in common usage range from about 100 litres (22 imp gal; 26 US gal) to 200 litres (44 imp gal; 53 US gal). In many connections the term "drum" is used almost interchangeably with "barrel".

Since medieval times the term barrel as a unit of measure has had various meanings throughout Europe, ranging from about 100 litres to 1000 litres, or more in special cases. The name was derived in medieval times from the French baril, of unknown origin, but still in use, both in French and as derivations in many other languages such as Italian, Polish and Spanish. In most countries such usage is obsolescent, increasingly superseded by SI units. As a result, the meaning of corresponding words and related concepts (vat, cask, keg etc.) in other languages often refers to a physical container rather than a known measure.

The 2015–16 Big Bash League season or BBL|05 was the fifth season of the Big Bash League (BBL), the premier Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia. The tournament ran from 17 December 2015 to 24 January 2016. The format of the tournament was identical to previous seasons. Each team played eight group stage matches, four at home and four away, before the top four ranked teams progressed to the Semi Finals. The Final of the tournament was played at the home ground of the highest-ranked team.

The Perth Scorchers were the reigning champions and were seeking a third successive title, but were beaten in the semi-finals by the Melbourne Stars.

The opening Sydney Derby match was played for the Batting for Change Trophy at Spotless Stadium. The match saw both the sides earning money for the Batting for Change charity with every six hit. Players had pledged to donate a total of $775 for each six hit during the match, as part of the Batting for Change cause set up by Sydney Sixers' player Ryan Carters.

The 2013–14 Big Bash League season or BBL|03 was the third season of the Big Bash League, the premier Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia. The tournament began on 20 December 2013 and ended on 7 February 2014. The format remained the same as the previous season but ran for a time-frame that is two weeks longer. The schedule also overlapped with the 2013–14 Ashes series. It was the first season to be broadcast on free-to-air television on Network Ten.

The tournament was won by Perth Scorchers and the final was hosted at the WACA Ground in Perth, Australia. The Scorchers beat the Hobart Hurricanes in the final by 39 runs. Ben Dunk from the Hurricanes was named the 'Man of the Tournament' while Jonathan Wells from the same team was named the 'Young Gun of the Tournament'.
