Burlingame is a city in San Mateo County, California. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and has a significant shoreline on San Francisco Bay. An early suburb of San Francisco, the city is named after diplomat Anson Burlingame. Beginning in the 1960s its proximity to the San Francisco International Airport generated airline support services growth and an increase in population. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Burlingame had a population of 28,807.

History

Burlingame is on the Mexican land grant Rancho San Mateo given by Governor Pio Pico to his secretary, Cayetano Arena in 1845. Cayetano soon sold the land to San Francisco-based merchant William Davis Merry Howard. Howard retired to live on the rancho for the remaining eight years of his life. Howard planted many eucalyptus trees on his property.

Howard's early death in 1856 led to the sale of most of the land to William C. Ralston, a prominent banker. In 1866, Anson Burlingame, the US Minister to China visited Ralston, and by the time he left he was the owner of 1,043 acres (4 km²) of land. In 1868, Ralston named the settlement after his friend, Anson Burlingame. However, Burlingame would not come back to the area again because on a visit to Russia in 1870, Burlingame died. With his death the land reverted to Ralston.

Burlingame Station is a Caltrain station in Burlingame, California. The building, in the Spanish Colonial Revival and Mission Revival architecture styles was built in 1894, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and registered as a California Historical Landmark.

Hold-out rule

Because of the narrow center platform, a hold-out rule was in effect at this station, where only one train could enter at a time (similar to the South San Francisco Station). With the completion of new northbound and southbound side platforms in early 2008 the hold-out rule has been eliminated. This change increased concerns over pedestrian safety. A few months later, a former resident, unaware of the change, was struck and killed by a northbound train.

Station Renovations

On February 25, 2008, Caltrain opened the new northbound platform at the station. This included new ticket machines, wheelchair accessibility, and LED-indicator signs. On April 1, Caltrain opened the newly renovated southbound platform. The temporary southbound platform extension that lengthened the platform by about 100 feet to the north was then demolished.
