Kingstown is a town in Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 681 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Kingstown is located at 35°21′32″N 81°37′3″W / 35.35889°N 81.61750°W / 35.35889; -81.61750 (35.358757, -81.617501).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 845 people, 258 households, and 210 families residing in the town. The population density was 480.0 people per square mile (185.4/km²). There were 273 housing units at an average density of 155.1 per square mile (59.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 4.38% White, 92.78% African American, 1.18% Asian, 0.95% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.42% of the population.

There were 258 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% were married couples living together, 29.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.6% were non-families. 17.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.24 and the average family size was 3.59.

North Carolina wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Wine has been produced in the area since the early days of European colonization in the 17th century. Wine growers in North Carolina were the first to cultivate a native American grape variety, the Scuppernong, which produces a sweet wine, examples of which are still being made in the state. Most wine produced in North Carolina since the year 2000 is made from Vitis vinifera grape varieties, although French hybrid and Vitis labrusca varieties remain common.

North Carolina ranks tenth in both grape and wine production in the United States. The state's wine industry continues to expand, and today is one of the United States’ five most visited state destinations for wine and culinary tourism. In 2007, North Carolina contained 55 wineries and 350 vineyards. By 2011, this had grown to more than 100 wineries and more than 400 vineyards.

The modern capital, Kingstown, was originally founded by French settlers shortly after 1722, although Saint Vincent had 196 years of British rule before her independence.

The botanical garden, conceived in 1765, is one of the oldest in the Western hemisphere. William Bligh, made famous from the Mutiny on the Bounty, brought seeds of the Breadfruit tree here for planting, ca 1793.
