Moms for Liberty are 'blaming everyone but themselves' for brutal election losses: columnist
Despite President Joe Biden's low approval ratings, Election Night 2023 was full of Democratic victories — from Gov. Andy Beshear's reelection in deep red Kentucky to Democrats flipping the Virginia House of Delegates to Judge Dan McCaffery defeating Republican Carolyn Carluccio in a Pennsylvania Supreme Court race. Another Democratic victory came in the form of all the school board races that Moms For Liberty lost.
The far-right group pushed a long list of school board candidates, many of whom suffered major defeats. The New Republic's Tori Otten described it as a "stinging rebuke" of the so-called "parental rights" organization.
In a scathing ReidOut Blog opinion column published on October 16, MSNBC's Ja'han Jones argues that Moms for Liberty are in a state of denial following those losses. Instead of realizing that its "extremist" ideas are unpopular, Jones emphasizes, Moms for Liberty are "blaming everyone but themselves."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
"On the heels of its losses," Jones explains, "Moms for Liberty seems to see fertile ground in Georgia, where the group just hosted a town hall…. Attacks on media and teachers unions were plentiful during the town hall."
But Moms for Liberty's main problem isn't teachers unions or the media, Jones adds — it's their unpopular ideas.
"All this kvetching was illustrative of the group's sordid state of affairs," Jones writes. "Moms for Liberty is arguably in its weakest political position since its 2021 launch. But instead of changing any of its extremist stances, the group's leaders and legislative backers are blaming everyone but themselves."
