Hi, and thanks very much :)
I have finished the first draft of the second book and I'm currently hammering it into the shape of something that actually resembles a novel... I am a very inefficient writer and I have a tendency to hugely over-write, then cut a lot out, add a lot more in, change locations and characters and so on. Eventually (hopefully within a couple of months) it can go off to my editors.
The plan is to release one book each year, so hopefuly BW2 will be hitting shelves around June next year!(less)

Four Books to read if you want to learn how to write Epic Fantasy Novels

I started thinking about the books that I thought were most helpful in terms of learning how to write fantasy novels. Before I begin the list, there are a few criteria that I think are worth noting.

The aims of reading these books are:

- To learn the essential storytelling concepts without adopting someone else’s specific style
- To create works of fantasy fiction that feel original
- To create works Read more of this blog post »

I wish there was a more useful answer than "I just make it up," but unfortunately that's the truth. Redwinter's magic system is vaguely tied to Existentialism and my own understanding of physics, but overall it's magic. Most world building is somethi See Full Answer

“I saw you stand,” I said. “Saw your courage, back at Twelve. Saw the steel in your will, the power you command. You say there’s nothing of woman about you? You aren’t some painted vase, delicate and useless. You’re a fucking lioness. The strongest damn thing that ever lived. There’s nothing of you but woman.”
Ed McDonald, Blackwing

“Corruption doesn’t take root in isolation, it embeds itself where the soil is fertile.”
Ed McDonald, Blackwing

“The world is a cruel mother, a matron of darkness, selfishness, greed, and misery. For most, their time suckling at her breast is naught but a scramble through stinging, tearing briars before a naked, shameful collapse as the flesh gives out. And yet in the bright eyes of every newborn, there lies a spark, a potential for goodness, the possibility of a life worth living. That spark deserves its chance. And though most of them will turn out to be as worthless as the parents who sired them, while the cruelty of the earth will tell them to release their innocence and join in the drawing of daggers, every now and then one manages to clutch to its beauty and refuses to release it into the dark.”
