The Written Review
description

...in 1954, Wicca became a popular way for people to embrace their spirituality without the constraints and dogma of organized religions.
This wonderful little guide teaches about what it means to be a modern Wiccca.

It begins by explaining what the Wiccan way is - including the history and origins of the religious movement.

From there, the book discusses how Wicca developed into its modern form - including different sects and their beliefs.

This part was particularly interesting to me - considering I went in with next to zero knowledge and was surprised by how many different types of Wiccans there are.

We delve a bit into the traditions and holidays - including core beliefs surrounding magic.
Every action has a reaction. What is sent out will return. You are free to do whatever you want, but you are responsible for whatever you do.
And from there the book explains the spiritual practices common in most Wiccan beliefs.
Nature plays an important role in Wicca. Wiccans are mindful of the rhythms of the natural world and are firmly rooted in Mother Earth...
The book ends with the more "traditional" aspects - meaning the Magick (spelled with a "k" to keep it separate from the magician type of magic). Spells, rituals and rites round out this book.

As someone who is not overtly familiar with the Wiccan way but is always hugely curious, I was quite satisfied with this book.

It lays out Wicca in an easily understandable way and provides quite a lot of lovely resources for further reading.

The spells in this book seemed simple and kind (if that makes sense - no warts on other people, just good luck and happiness).

All in all, if you are curious about what Wicca is and how it fits into the modern world, I definitely recommend giving this book a gander!

A huge thank you to Rockridge Press, Callisto Publisher's Club and Rowena Morgana for sending me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

pretty unimpressed with this. I guess it hit home reading this that my views really fall out of the purview of wicca these days, and some of the stuff reads as pretty dated. Oh well, decent content on some history and correspondences, at least.

I gave this book four stars instead of five because I felt like the author contradicted herself quite a bit while trying to explain Wicca and it’s variations. I’m Pagan, not Wiccan, so I read this book strictly to review for others. It is a quick read that is easy to follow. The rituals and spells are straightforward, although it’s difficult to tell who this book is really written for. 90% of the book is beginner information and the other 10% is spells and rituals that might not be suited for beginners.

I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Modern Wicca by Rowan Morgana was an eye-opening and intensely thought-provoking read for me – someone not of the Wiccan faith. I have never been a religious person and classify myself as something akin to an Athiest or Agnostic dependent upon my place in life… but after reading this book, I can say that IF I were to ascribe to a system of belief, it might very well lead me towards Wicca.

The Wiccan belief system, which centers around nature, inclusivity, and the idea of balance between our actions and their consequences spoke to me on a very human and basic level. Though the idea of altars, rituals, spells, and magick may seem silly to the casual observer, it was fascinating to see the underlying currents of real thoughtfulness and awareness that went into the physical acts of ritual and spellcraft. There is a sense of patience and understanding in what Wiccan practitioners do that goes beyond the surface level things we see and hear about Wicca in the media.

I hold a certain respect for Wiccans after having delved this little bit into their world and am certainly interested in reading more. (Author, hit me up if you need more reviews!) This book was well-written, well-organized, and came across as both thorough and unbiased in the way the author portrayed information. If you are interested in learning about Wicca, I’d say that this is an excellent place to start.

I've been reading about Wicca for decades, and like to stay abreast of the new beginner guides. Some err on the side of "spell spell spell" without foundation, and some focus more on theory. Modern Wicca has the perfect balance of spiritual foundations and traditions with rituals and spell work to get the new practitioner moving forward. She also infuses her beliefs and spiritual foundations with inspiration and empowerment directed toward the reader/new practitioner. Rituals are simply and directly stated, which is a great starting point. I read every page inspired about my chosen spiritual path, and so happy that Rowan Morgana has shared her spiritual gifts with us. I absolutely LOVE her guide, and learned some new information. This is one of few "Wicca 101" books that will remain on my shelf. Thank you, Callisto, for the review copy!

LOVED this book. First, I am not a wiccan of any kind, but the world of it really inspires and intrigues me. After reading this book, which seems to be really great for beginners, I am even more interested. In fact, I went and bought a few things to cast some spells once I was done. Modern Wicca gives background to the spiritual practice and for anyone who is just stepping their toes in, it seems like a great way to get basic information.

I am not Wiccan, but I've been fascinated and drawn to Wicca for some time, but the "beginner" guides I've read confused me or have been solely focused on spells and witchcraft. This book was a solid introduction into Wicca and finding the way to practice that best suits you. I really enjoyed and appreciated how each aspect of Wicca is explained, especially the different ways to practice and that there is no "one" way to practice.

Modern Wicca is a brief overview of Wicca that would be most useful to someone brand new. I found it to be not nearly as complete as some of the other "Wicca 101" books, but the information it did contain was well-written. Some of the things that the author presents as true of Wicca in general seemed like it was more based on her personal practice or tradition, as they were terms I've never seen in other books, but that's to be expected of a religion as diverse as this one.

I found this book interesting even though I have no intention of becoming a wiccan. My daughter loaned me this book and I wanted to find out more about her religion.
