“When the black thing was at its worst, when the illicit cocktails and the ten-mile runs stopped working, I would feel numb as if dead to the world. I moved unconsciously, with heavy limbs, like a zombie from a horror film. I felt a pain so fierce and persistent deep inside me, I was tempted to take the chopping knife in the kitchen and cut the black thing out I would lie on my bed staring at the ceiling thinking about that knife and using all my limited powers of self-control to stop myself from going downstairs to get it.”

“I mean, that's at least in part why I ingested chemical waste - it was a kind of desire to abbreviate myself. To present the CliffNotes of the emotional me, as opposed to the twelve-column read.
I used to refer to my drug use as putting the monster in the box. I wanted to be less, so I took more - simple as that. Anyway, I eventually decided that the reason Dr. Stone had told me I was hypomanic was that he wanted to put me on medication instead of actually treating me. So I did the only rational thing I could do in the face of such as insult - I stopped talking to Stone, flew back to New York, and married Paul Simon a week later.”

“I knew there was never anyone to blame when people get into drugs. They're always responsible for their own behavior, and it's not the dealer, it's not the friend, it's not the bad influence, it's not the childhood.”

“She wasn't about to go down that road herself, which was a testament to her spiritual awakening and her commitment to sanity. It was a real blessing that she didn't follow me, because oftentimes, people go out together and one comes back and the other doesn't. Or both of them never do.”

“Now she looked at Matthias, his hair coming in thick and gold, long enough that it was just starting to curl over his ears. She loved the sight of him, and she hated it too. Because he wouldn’t give her what she wanted. Because he knew how badly she needed it.”

“What time is it?’
‘Whatever time you want it to be,’ she gave him a cheeky wink. ‘Now be honest, did you ask for free will?’
‘How did you—?’
Amanita joined Mario beneath the covers. The ethereal Threads tethering her wrists phased through the thick wool blankets like sunlight through a windowpane.
‘The bird that acknowledges its cage only ever sings of freedom,’ she said dreamily.”

“gold light burned faintly.
From his cosy window seat, Mario was tracing a frost-flower on the windowpane with an unsure finger. Were its perfectly-rendered geometric patterns a product of nature, or were they an artefact of metaphysics? Was the frost-flower to the Masters what a work of Art was to him? Did the Masters of Strings truly control every aspect of reality?
The fractal flower slowly melted under Mario’s fingertip.
“No work of chance here,” he bitterly thought. “This was by design.”

“Sometimes we must allow our locked-and-tethered inner demon a short glimpse beyond the bars,” thought Mario, “lest we forget the full extent of our virtue. One’s power does not reside in the length of their demon’s claw, but in the strength of its manacle. The unleashed demon is worthless, lest it’s controlled.”

“The demon looked insulted. ‘You don’t like the Underworld, brother?’
‘Can’ff ssay I do,’ spoke Mario through the curved claw held firmly between his teeth. ‘Much bffetter up tffhere!’ he pointed at the amber-glowing canopy perched at the very top of the World Tree.
‘Yeah but that seems like—,’ the green-eyed demon paused, as though he was bracing himself for something. ‘–work,’ he finally said. The word alone seemed to cause him unimaginable disgust. ‘How about you put that rock down and come waste time with us at the pit?”

“I have to reregister a room for my heart. It's been waiting a long time, somewhere outside, without so much as a whisper of protest. That abandonment wasn't just an abuse, it was a sin.”

“The reality is “using and abusing” takes people on rides to places they never intended to go. Most don’t realize they are even on a trip until they have already gone too far.”

“God can free a thousand slaves, but he could have freed more if only they knew they were slaves.”

“If I let Gallowglass just pluck out my pain like a dead tooth, then I wouldn’t learn nothin’ from all those years on the needle. Eventually, I’d just find a way to fuck up all over again, twice as bad. Sometimes it’s our scars that hold us together, Noah.”

“Ride A Bike (The Sonnet)
Ride a bike 'n you get sick less,
You pay for the doctor less.
Ride a bike 'n you emit carbon less,
You pay for the gas less.
Ride a bike 'n you release endorphins,
Hence you have less stress.
Ride a bike 'n the heart pumps better,
Thus you feel exhaustion less.
Pills in need are pills indeed,
To pop pills willy-nilly is to abuse health.
Comfort in need is comfort indeed,
To abuse comfort beyond need is to abuse oneself.
Ride a bike everyday to keep the pills away.
Use pills in need but don't make them life's way.”

“We take drug abuse very seriously, Lydia.”
Abuse? Use, surely. She was using it exactly as intended.”

“The longest I ever stayed up on meth was something like fourteen days. I started seeing these little creatures in my house. They looked so real to me that to this very day I could swear I actually saw them. They were these little men who looked like Stretch Armstrong dolls, but green. They were being manufactured under my house. They came up out of the ground and ran around my living room, and I would run around my house, chasing them, and shooting my gun at them. Sometimes I hit one, and it died. Then, all of a sudden, the wall opened up, and the creatures grabbed him and dragged him back inside, so I couldn't show anybody. That's why nobody else could see them but me.”

“Dark Child by Stewart Stafford
Moondust down the fire curtain
Carried Syd to the darkest side,
Trespass became a prison term,
A non-compos mentis dark child.
From gambolling nymph with a lute,
To an imp falling over instruments,
A thousand-yard stare sucked in,
Vacant eyes drew like a black hole.
Riderless horse, a living déjà vu,
The spectral shell of our brother,
Ambled towards us at his nadir,
We wept for the shuffling stranger.

“Pipes filled with crack burn at the same time American flags do. Just another paradox in the life and times of modern-day Iranian. The '80s introduced the world to the crack epidemic. It wasn't long before crystallized cocaine found its way from the mean streets of New York to the beaten-down streets of Tehran.”

“The truth is, sometimes I wanted him gone. He frightened me a little, my brother. As much as I loved him, I knew something was wrong with him. I knew he did drugs, but there was always something else. He could be moody, lethargic one moment and giddy the next. He could be buoyant, and sometimes his liveliness had an indescribable edge of rage to it, so that when he picked me up and spun me around, I wasn't entirely sure where he was giving me flight or preparing to throw me.”

“Surely in this vale of tears we call life, the ill, the halt, and the lame find it curious that some people with constitutions like bull calves sometimes consider their good health and strength a curse rather than a blessing. It can be, though. In fistfights, even beaten senseless, we don't fall down nearly soon enough; the joys of drug abuse don't seem to take their proper toll; and, sometimes, when we try to drink ourselves to death, we fail miserably. Miserably.”
