Years ago, I read 'Pillars of the Earth' and loved it, but had never read any of the other books in the series. I innocently listened to the 4 minute sample of 'Evening and the Morning' on Audible, and that was it- I was totally absorbed. I used a credit, got the audio, and listened to all 25 hours of this book within a weekend. I absolutely loved it. I WILL admit though, that a lot of this is due to the fact that this was the Audible version of the book. The narrator, John Lee, was incredible and managed to create a plethora of different character voices, complete with at least a dozen different accents. I was quite impressed, and his narration was a huge reason why I got so absorbed and finished so quickly. Were I reading the 900 page print version instead, I don't think my reaction would be quite the same. Heck, I added one whole star to my rating just because of JOHN LEE's work! I highly recommend (the audible version of) this book. (Also, there's no need to have read 'Pillars of the Earth' beforehand, this is a stand alone story set 200 years or so before the events of 'Pillars'.) --Jen from Quebec :0)...more

Despite NOT being a doctor or health care worker, Holmes created a company worth BILLIONS that promised to give people a full medical make-up from a single drop of blood, using a machine of her/Theranos' creation. No more filling vials at blood tests! One drop and you can know all the medical info about yourself that you need! Give a drop at a WalGreens testing center and detect your cancer early enough to defeat it! Etc etc This is written by Tyler Shultz, a former employee who was forced out of the company after daring to question the math/stats/info Theranos would use in it's shady medical testing....And also for noticing the pesky fact that the Theranos machines and tests did not work at all. Another element making this book important is that the author, Tyler, has a grandfather who sat on the Board of Directors for Theranos, was a principal investor of millions in Holmes' company...and was completely enamored with Elizabeth. There are a LOT of elements at play here, a lot of 'behind the scenes' info, and the writing style makes this story feel like it is multiple genres combined. Also, Tyler narrates the Audible version himself and does a FANTASTIC job. Highly recommended! --Jen from Quebec :0)...more

Had I READ this, I'd be going to give this a 3. BUT the audio had good narration, and the POV changed often, and well, it all became MUCH more entertaining in this format, leading to the rating of 4. --Jen from Quebec :0)...more
