Probably not fair.
This book was very good. I haven't read anything with a steam punk flavor that's been better than fair in a long time so this was very refreshing. I liked the world and the characters who although sticking to traditional themes were not over the top parodies.
I will continue this parallel duel series with great expectations. ...more

Another good chapter in this series. The blend of historical fiction, musketeer era fantasy and steampunk also has a darkness to it. I was worried after book one that things had wrapped up a bit too neatly and that book two would have trouble finding itself but that wasn't the case. This is definitely a series where each book is a separate adventure which isn't necessarily a bad think. Locke Lamora and other great series pull it off as this one is.
If you really love court drama and intrigue and great writing and can overlook little to no action you'll love this series. If you're waiting for the If you really love court drama and intrigue and great writing and can overlook little to no action you'll love this series. If you're waiting for the final scene of The Two Towers you're going to be majorly disappointed.
This reminded me of Hobb's Fitz books with all the court rules and this person playing that person. The two negatives for me was the use of Serenity used as a formal term for Emperor after a while started to drive me nuts. There were portions of the book where it was one in ten words. The second was some of the faction and family names were very complexed and difficult to track.

No offense to the YA lovers but there's so much of it out there I like series that aren't YA more because there's less of it to choose from and I don't miss the angst.
Enter Sancia and Clef who instantly remind me of Lift and Wyndle from Stormlight Archives. Lift for is is by far the most aggravating character in that series and I'm sure many others would like to force feed her pancakes just to shut up her inane psychobabble.
Fortunately Sancia isn't Lift nor is Clef wimpy like Wyndle. Plus there's a lot of very likeable adult characters. Probably because of the Lift and Sancia connection Gregor reminds me of Darkess (Nale) quite a bit as well, especially as the story goes on.
The magic system here isn't necessarily unique but it is presented in a unique way and the crafting around it is very detailed and interesting.
Like all of the RJB books I've read to date this starts slow and gets better and better. You need to be patient but in the end it was quite good.
Looking forward to the next book in the series. ...more

It's not a bad book. It's just that it didn't offer me anything new in the pirate genre and what it did offer has been done before and better. The pacing was also slow and I never really warmed to any of the characters. I'd also, and please don't crucify me there's no real way to phase this right, avoid this if rape is on your to be avoided at all cost list.
If you're in the market for an easy read that's totally straightforward and has most of the standard pirate grimdark markings you'll probably enjoy the book....more

This book read like a newsreel being delivered by a stiff network anchor. I never felt engaged by the story or the characters. Everything moves at a super slow pace an is overly simplistic.
The book is a steampunk and historical fictional piece about the son of assassinated WW1 icon Franz Ferdinand. The story takes place in the events leading up to and then in the war. The fictitiously named son spends his time on the run in a dirigible learning secrets long kept from him.
