It is on that day (or rather, night and the early hours of December 3) that deadly Methyl IsoCyanate (MIC) gas escaped from the Union Carbide plant and virtually wiped out a city. Known as the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, it is considered the worst industrial disaster of the Twentieth Century.

I was in my final year of Chemical Engineering while this happened, and felt guilty by association. Now, after working for nearly three-and-a-half decades in the industry and ending up in the field of Process Safety, I am gratified that I am doing my mite to prevent such disasters. Safety has progressed in leaps and bounds from the dark days of 1984, but it's still not enough - not by a long chalk, especially in India.
This novel, titled "Aakaanth" (Wailing) in its original Marathi (this is a Malayalam translation, BTW) is a novel about an industrial tragedy, modelled on Bhopal. Its author, Subodh Javadekar is a chemical engineer: and he has taken creative license in changing the deadly gas to Phosgene. It is an exploration of how a series of goof-ups can produce a tragedy of such monumental proportions - and having worked in the industry, I can vouch for how frighteningly probable they are. The author's skill in weaving a plausible narrative is visible throughout.
"Accidents do not happen, they are created." So says the safety proverb - and it's perfectly true. And the stupidity of humankind is the main reason - as Einstein says, it is indeed infinite. This is perfectly highlighted in this novel, as minor mistakes build on one another to create a tragic trail of errors which ultimately end in disaster.
Safety in a chemical factory comprises many layers, labelled "Layers of Protection". They can be inbuilt into the design; implemented through mechanical devices or instrumentation (electronic); or they can be enforced through safe operating procedures. (Inbuilt safety is best, followed by mechanical, then instrumentation, then procedural.) At any point of time, any layer can develop a defect. It is assumed that in case that happens, the next layer will prevent the mishap. However, there can be times when defects in various layers become aligned, and disaster slips through. It is called the "Swiss Cheese Model", with each layer of protection compared to a cheese slice, and the defects compared to holes in it.

The fictitious factory in this novel is on the rocks - because the plant is unable to run at full capacity, thus driving up per unit costs - and the job of the General Manager, Mr. Khanna, is on the line. As part of cost-cutting, instead of attacking the root cause, he goes for stop-gap measures: and shortcuts invariably leads to danger. Refrigeration of phosgene is stopped to save power, storing the gas under pressure. All safety related items are the first to be axed from procurement, as they do not directly contribute to the production. Cheap and unreliable equipment and instruments are used instead of items of proven quality. Added to this is the embargo on overtime, resulting in a demoralised and reluctant workforce. A perfect recipe for disaster.
Bhaskaran, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology and a person of unimpeachable professional integrity is the only person to mount any sort of resistance - but he is helpless against the management muscle. The Safety Department is nothing but a sinecure. As days go buy, the condition of the plant keeps on worsening - aggravated by the lack of spare parts as Ganguly, who is in charge of procurement, will buy only from certain vendors who provide kickbacks (which is then shared between him and Khanna). Until finally one night, all the holes in the cheese get aligned...
Apart from the quick pace of the narrative, the novel also benefits from brilliant characterisation. The educated, knowledgeable but spineless Chief Engineer Murthy; Jamadar, who is looking after safety because he failed everywhere else; the quiet and sincere Instrumentation Head Mudgal; Mehta and Nagarkar, whose only job is gossip; Ganguly, the seasoned thief; and workers of all hues from the super-sincere to the incredibly-inefficient... walk into any plant in India, and you will meet them all. The irony of the story is that they all become victims (presumably - there is no description of the aftermath) while the man mainly responsible for it all, Khanna, escapes.
I do not know whether an English translation of this novel is available. If it is not, well then, it should be! This novel requires a wider audience....more

A love of football, fish and communism (or should I say activism?); and the tendency to talk and argue at length on anything under the sun. In addition to this, Keralites of the past generation absolutely loved Bengali literature, and I picked this bug from my uncle.
Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay is a revered and and respected Bengali author from the turn of the last century - his આરોગ્ય નિકેતન is a cult novel in Kerala. So I was overjoyed at finding this collection of his stories in Malayalam translation. Titled "Suvarna Kathakal" (golden stories), it held the promise of great delights.
Well, I must confess that I was a tad disappointed. Apart from the first story, "Jalsa Ghar" (The Music Room), made into a famous movie by the great Satyajit Ray, none of the stories really impressed. "Jalsa Ghar" narrates the tale of Vishwambhar Rai, the last surviving member of a princely dynasty, fallen on bad times in his town in New India, where the trader family of the Gangulys have now established their financial hegemony. Rai only has his dilapidated mansion, his aging horse Toofan, and his elephant Chotto Ginni to remind him of the days gone by. But one day, when his noveau rich neighbour gets the dancer Krishna Bai down to entertain him, Vishwambhar Rai throws caution to the winds and becomes king again for a day. It is a beautiful, bittersweet tale.
The other stories which impressed me are (I am translating the titles loosely from Malayalam) "House of Cards", where a young woman's need to keep up appearances have nearly disastrous consequences; "No", in which a young woman's defiant negative calls into question what justice and revenge means; "The Gypsy" which shows us the raw emotions running riot in the tents and the hearts of itinerant fairground performers, metaphorically represented by the wild animals they keep; and "Agradani", about a poor Brahmin gone almost mad with his need for food, and the one treacherous act he does which comes back to haunt him. The collection has five more stories.
A major hindrance to my enjoyment of the stories was the poor quality of translation by Leela Sarkar. The tales appeared disjointed, and many Bengali terms were directly transliterated into Malayalam, which made no sense....more
