Loved the gothic vibes, and I can see why some people love this book. BUT the murder mystery (a few plot points felt too convenient and hard to believe) and romance (little buildup) and several of the characters (almost everyone in that house...) just lacked depth to me, and the big reveal was frankly somewhat disappointing. Signa's friendship with Blythe was probably my favorite part. That said, Belladonna was still super readable and decently paced. Not sure if I will pick up the next book in the series, but a fun read nonetheless....more
I liked this, but I really wanted to LOVE it yk?? Powerless is very YA dystopia, reminiscent of the Hunger Games/The Selection (which have my heart). I liked this, but I really wanted to LOVE it yk?? Powerless is very YA dystopia, reminiscent of the Hunger Games/The Selection (which have my heart). While this was fun to read and the power system is interesting, there wasn't much that made this work distinctive for me from other novels in its genre. Which is honestly fine bc I was reading for entertainment, but I could NOT get over the cheesiness of the dialogue. I consider myself to be pretty trope-tolerant, but I had to skim several conversations because they were so repetitive. All in all, I had a good time but probably won't continue the series. ...more

review of the series: 4/5 stars. "thriller romance" is a pretty spot-on descriptor, and so is the title of the series. ignore any preconceptions bc of review of the series: 4/5 stars. "thriller romance" is a pretty spot-on descriptor, and so is the title of the series. ignore any preconceptions bc of the foul cover lmao. this was super messed up (check TWs) but also addictive?? very criminal minds, and if you liked this i would recommend the kdrama 'flower of evil' (similar premise, nailed the thriller-melodrama-romance genre). anyway, this series was fast-paced and plot-driven, with likable protagonists. definitely entertaining enough to help me out of my reading slump....more
