I mean, really. How can you not love this book?? That quote and the title pretty much let you know what this one is about, however, I still did not expect anything of what I just read. This was simply brilliant, and I did not want it to end.
As the oldest child, I sympathized with Korede in that the younger siblings can oftentimes do no wrong in the parents’ eyes, BUT this was a bit extreme and obviously created some bad behaviors in both sisters to say the least - both in the killing and the cleaning up of messes. Yikes.
The plot was certainly unique - I loved the short chapters and writing style, and it was a legit page turner. The ending was phenomenal too, a book like this just should not have a bow put on the end, and this did not disappoint.

She is a female firefighter who knows she is doing exactly what she was born to do. She heads into fires when others run away. She is the darling of the Austin TX firehouse and is a shoe-in for a promotion to lieutenant. This all sounds great, you say, but what is her flaw? We know she has one, you say. Oh that. Well, she doesn’t speak to her mom, and doesn’t date anyone ever, and pretty much hasn’t been kissed, and she HATES hugs. BUT, it helps make for a darn good firefighter, amiright? Of course, all of this gets confronted in literally the best way possible.
Cassie is forced to leave her nice life in Austin and go to Boston to join a small firehouse, and live with her mom (yes, that one), for a year. She is told that it will not be easy at the new firehouse, they will not like her, they will not accept her, and oh, btw, she also has to deal with her mom. And on top of all that, a rookie at is about to walk into her life and have an impact on her that she isn’t used to. Cassie learns about forgiveness, in literally the most profound way possible. So much so that I found myself taking notes and want to apply this to some parts of my life as well (thank you Katherine). Finally, she learns what it feels like to not be alone all the time, the impact of a hug, and how much things can change in a year.
This was a solid 5 star read for me, and will definitely be a top read of 2019. This is out on 8/13/19, and I strongly advise you to preorder this one and get to it immediately when it is out next week!

Y’all. When I read Killman Creek a while back I wondered how there could be a 3rd book. I am here to tell you, there can TOTALLY be a 3rd book. In facY’all. When I read Killman Creek a while back I wondered how there could be a 3rd book. I am here to tell you, there can TOTALLY be a 3rd book. In fact, this might be my favorite of the series. Maybe because I am familiar with the characters, or maybe because they are coming into their own and a new plot twist is introduced, but I devoured this one and am now sad it is over.
To be honest, this started off a little slow, and we began re-hashing the online conspiracy theories created by internet trolls that Gwen must have had something to do / knowledge of / assisted with her serial killer ex-husband’s murders. Yes, I understand there has to be some re-telling to bring those up to speed that start with this book, however, we stayed in this space so much that it began to feel a little book one all over again, and I was getting a little meh because I have already read book one.
But then. It takes off. It is no longer book one but it is now Wolfhunter River and I AM THERE FOR IT. This was so good, I could not click the Kindle fast enough! The additional setting / new plot was refreshing, and the book one Melvin Royal / Gina Royal conspiracy theories carryover were needed for conflict but I got why, as the book went on. We also got resolution to the Sam/Gwen history, with a new twist that was unexpected but good.
You will have to read it yourself to know what happens, but good news, it is out this Tuesday 4/23. This was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 stars, and I highly recommend, especially if you have read the other two books in the series. If you have, I don’t need to tell you there are all kinds of trigger warnings in here, it is after all a psychological thriller!

This was nuts! I seriously need a drink after reading this mind bender of a thriller.
Let’s review the players - Laura Heart has come home after being This was nuts! I seriously need a drink after reading this mind bender of a thriller.
Let’s review the players - Laura Heart has come home after being away for a while, because Laura has just been through a really bad breakup. Rosie Ferro is her sister, and the two are close, but Laura can be difficult to love because of an event that happened when they were younger. Rosie is married to Joe, who has loved her since they were in high school. Gabe is their close friend who works in IT, he and Joe have been best friends since they were little, and the three of them let the younger Laura tag along. Got it? Good, because now that you do, Wendy Walker flips the script and you really know nothing!
Now for the plot - As I said above, Laura has recently had a bad breakup, and in fact, has not had a great history with love. Her first love from high school was brutally murdered and although she was cleared, doubts remained to this day by many of her guilt, including her sister. She perseveres on, but is coming home to stay with her sister for a bit. She signs up for a blind date on a dating website, and she is excited, doubtful, curious - is this guy who he says he is? Is she? When things take a turn that night, so many things are brought to light from all sides, and that’s what I mean when nothing and no one is what it seems.
This is told from different time periods, the night before and present day, and also from Laura and Rosie’s POV’s. This was captivating, I was hooked from the beginning, wanting to know what happened in the past, what happened on the date, and how everything would be resolved. The sisters also have a complex relationship, you know they love each other, but they also have their struggles. Laura feels resentful because Rosie seems to have had an easy life, unlike her. Rosie feels resentful because everything has always been about Laura, given the what happened to her when they were younger. These resentments and events make them unreliable narrators, although Laura definitely more so than Rosie.
If I say any more I will give too much away, but believe me I really want to, so how about instead you all just go pick this one up and read it for yourselves. In the meantime, I will continue processing and thinking on this one!

I need a minute to process this one, because it was intense, messed up, twisted, and GOOD. So let's say you have newborn twins, you are sleep deprived, you have no help from your sorry jerk of a husband, a river woman is trying to steal them when you do sleep, and hangs around your house letting you know she is waiting. Then you fall asleep for a hot minute and wake up and they are gone! Oh, and no one believes a word you say when you tell folks that they aren't your babies when you get them back, and these 'creatures', aka babies, start messing with you when no one is looking. What would you do??? This would literally be the worst possible scenario, but guess what, it all happens to Lauren. And guess what, I enjoyed every single minute of it, trying to figure out what in the world was going on, whether it was all in her head or whether she was telling the truth.
The use of changelings (e.g. a fairy child left in place of a human child) was well done and fascinating. It left me second guessing myself on what was really happening, as I am just not that familiar with this concept. The ending was not unrealistic which was good, because obviously with this premise it certainly could have been.
The detective side of the story was a little distracting from the rest. DI Harper is a good detective, using her gut instincts to break big cases, but in this one she had to constantly rely on a reporter for what appeared to be basic research skills, which seems odd and a bit unrealistic given her history.

I thought the concept was interesting, and started off fine, but the execution fell a little flat for me. I think maybe the facade drug on a little too long, or maybe I just couldn't believe Millie was so strong in every facet of her life but could not really expose any deep part of herself to her friends? I get that she wouldn't have many (if any) female friends, but it seems like these guys would know more about her just inherently from seeing her so much over the years. That was really my issue here, the rest was fine.
Now the ending?? Ah-mazing. I am not ashamed to admit I was in tears, and just loved loved loved it. I figured I knew how it would go, and it pretty much did go that way, but in much more of an epic way than I thought. That alone was worth it. I don't have a problem recommending this one, as I think there are plenty of folks who will disagree with my thoughts above and love everything about this book, and that's okay. I will definitely be reading more of their books though, that is for sure!

That being said, it stood alone just fine on its own, and I did not need to have read the other two as the references to them were minimal. The Suspect centers around two girls that go missing on a trip to Thailand, and their mothers' attempts to find them from the US. Kate Waters is a reporter, a consistent character from the previous two books, who happens to have a son in Thailand as well. She gets the lead interviews and headlines on these girls, but the narrative quickly takes a turn when it appears her son has not been honest with her regarding his whereabouts and activities in Thailand, and is now connected to the missing girls.
This was a great read, and was informational on all the things you should NOT do when traveling overseas. I felt like this could be a parent's literal worst nightmare, and Barton did an excellent job at keeping the story fascinating, but never did it veer off into an extreme or absurd plot that jumped the shark. All of it was believable, which made it that more frightening. The overall pacing was steady - I read this in a couple of sittings. She also covered all the bases in how a mother would react through each of the mothers in this story - anger, denial, depressed, etc.. DI Bob Sparkes is also a consistent character (I believe), and he had a touching story regarding his wife but I also enjoyed the relationship between he and Kate, e.g. Detective vs. Reporter.
Overall this was 4 stars for me and I would definitely recommend it when it is released on 1/22/19. I will be going back and adding the first two books in this series to my TBR as well! The father of twins Danny and Seraphina, and their older brother Edwin has recently passed away due to a sudden accident, and their mother committed suicide shortly after the twins were born. While going through his belongings, Seraphina finds a photo that is suspect to say the least, and she begins to question everything about their birth. She tries to find the Au Pair that was helping their mother with Edwin before they were born, and from there things begin to unravel and Seraphina starts questioning everything she thought she knew since she was a child.
I could NOT put this down, I had to know what was going on, and some of my guesses were wrong. So you can probably discern that this is a dysfunctional family, and that Laura, the au pair, has some secrets of her own, but how the author weaves everything together to make it work is fantastic, and just overall very well done. The book is told from two POVs - Seraphine's in the current day, and Laura's from back then. This makes for a very interesting narrative, and it really works for this story.
There are a few things going on here, and without spoiling anything, we are trying to figure out if the mother's death is as it seems, the twins are who they think they are, and who knows the answers to all of this but isn't saying? Oh, and throw in some old folklore that has been going around for years regarding the original family that owned the land, the husband apparently made some bad deals and as a result bad things happened to his twins (that is a very high level summary). So, from then on, as legend would have it, any twins living on said land were 'doomed', which may or may not be coming to fruition...
I was not sure how this would wrap up, and although perhaps it veered a tad out there with the final explanation, it is fiction after all and therefore I went with it. Like I said, I was not expecting the story to go this way, and it was a nice change for me. The pacing was steady, and just overall a great read that I knocked out in about two settings. I will absolutely be recommending this one when it comes out on 1/8/19.

I was not expecting the interview format, but it really worked for this story. You feel like you are listening to a conversation between friends that you should not be privy to, but cannot walk away from. Full disclosure, while reading this, I thought it was a true story, and just tried to look them up to listen to their music, and did further research when nothing came up. Gahhhhh. I mean really, that's how good TJR is, no? This story is set in current day Prague. Melmoth is a haunting creature that is a dark, lonely soul, and is destined to torment those she thinks she can persuade to join her in a lifetime of solitude. Keep in mind this is allegedly a fairy tale, old legend's tale, whatever you want to call it, as not everyone has heard of her, nor believes the tale, and she goes by a few different names depending on the area - Melmoth, or Melmotte, or Melmotka.
Helen Franklin runs into an old friend, Dr. Karel Prazan, who is looking a bit mad. He is all over the place, talking crazy about this Melmoth character. This is the first that Helen has ever heard of her, and so he leaves her with a letter that started his spiral, and then takes off. She reads the letter and then goes to his home, and finds his wife Thea there. Thea and Karel are very close and are both friends with Helen. However, Thea's health has taken a turn, and it appears that the story of Melmoth has gotten to Karel and no one knows where he is. Helen now becomes obsessed with researching Melmoth, so you begin to see the hold that she can have on people even in the present day.
The pacing starts to picks up a bit at this point, and you have to pay attention to not miss some details. The book can be chilling, almost scary even, and I think it was mostly due to Sarah's exquisite writing and her great attention to detail. Melmoth herself - how she supposedly operates and allegedly appears is absolutely haunting. When I thought the story was done, Sarah managed to write one last tiny section that is absolute perfection, genius even. That alone raised this a star for me.
"Oh my friend, my darling -- won't you take my hand? I've been so lonely!"

I finished, and thought the writing was well done, but I could not get behind all of the abuse. The book is pitched as a world where women do not feel safe, however the main woman causing the problems was the mother. The father was a huge problem too, but the book makes it clear that men are to be feared. However the three sisters have turned on each other due to the abuse from the mother, which is hardly surprising. I had to keep reading to see how this would end, but not because I was enjoying it.

We begin learning that the Montrose family has left Boston for the small town of New Oldbury, and moved into Willow Hall due to a scandal. It is not explicitly stated right away what the scandal was, but you are led to believe it is because of the 'witch' tendencies that Lydia, the middle daughter, has shown. And it appears this may be right, however, this is not the only scandal in this family....
Mr. John Barrett is a gentleman who lives nearby, and happens to be their father's business partner. He also has taken a liking to Lydia. She reciprocates these feelings, however, neither can have a direct conversation to save their lives, so there is drama with them throughout that keeps building until the end.
I really enjoyed the paranormal aspect of this and thought it was woven well into the story. There were parts that were a little creepy, but not enough to give me nightmares, which is always a plus. I really was not expecting to like this so much. It kept my attention, I enjoyed the location (it sounded absolutely beautiful), the love story was well done, and again, the paranormal was just the right amount.

Racism is disgusting, and because we cannot fathom how it still exists today, when we encounter people who are racists, oftentimes we react in the same way that the other side does without realizing it. Meaning, we are hateful and judgmental, we attack, call them racists, and other hurtful things. Therefore, we have done to them the exact thing that they have done to others, justifying their beliefs, and no progress is made. This book shows what happens when instead we choose to have a conversation. With someone that does not agree with our beliefs. With someone that breeds hate. Progress is in fact made.
Derek Black was born the son of a prominent white nationalist, and quickly followed in his father's footsteps. His father, Don Black, was close friends with David Duke, a KKK leader, and he was also Derek's godfather. Derek was closely aligned with both of their beliefs and seen as a rising star in the movement. Derek had his own radio show, and kept it going while he started college at New College of Florida. Not knowing what to expect, he kept quiet about who he was and became friends with several people that he probably shouldn't given his beliefs - a hispanic, a jew, and he even dated a white girl that he quickly learned was Jewish. Once he was outed by another student, he did not react with anger, but laid low and his friends began having conversations with him about why he thought the way he did. One even invited him to Shabbat every week so that he could see what it was like, and they quickly became close friends. Derek also became very close friends with a girl named Allison, and over time, through many conversations, she was able to show him how his ideology was wrong. He finally renounced his beliefs, costing him his family but earning the support of many others.
I could go on and on here but I think the book is absolutely worth reading, and Derek's transformation certainly did not happen overnight. but I think it is key to point out how effective it was to have conversations, backed with facts, and after a while the most devout white nationalist was able to see that this way of thinking is hurtful, ignorant, and incorrect. And that alone is encouraging and hopeful.

Joe is headed home with his son William, and they decide to follow his wife once they happen to see her at a light 'just to say hello'. And Joe's life is turned upside down from there. I have played that game before - if only I had went straight home that day, if only I had not answered that phone call, etc. However, for me, these decisions did not have the dire consequences that they did for Joe. He sees his wife go to a hotel and get into an argument with a man, Ben, who happens to be the husband of one of her close friends, and it just spirals and twists and turns from there. There were almost too many lies / twists for me, but I did enjoy the book. I was able to figure out almost all of it, minus the ending, but I was often distracted trying to guess what was going on little too much. Sometimes this happens for me when there are so many twists and lies, I begin trying to anticipate curve balls instead of just enjoying the flow of the story. Eventually, Ben goes missing, and then Joe becomes prime suspect #1 in Ben's murder, (even though said murder has not been confirmed, I know, I know.....), and he realizes he cannot trust anyone, not even his own wife as she has lied to him several times since he confronted her, and therefore he must figure out what is going on himself. Ben has been emailing him regularly with threats, so surely he is not dead, but why won't the police listen to him??? This was a fast paced story that starts with the opening chapter and never lets up. Overall this was a good thriller although a tad unrealistic, but I liked it. 3.5 stars

I flew through it in a few hours on the plane, it was THAT GOOD!
If you have read The Wedding Date, then you will recognize a few of the characters, but you do not need to have read that book to keep up with this one.
The Proposal focuses on Carlos, who was the best friend in the first book, but there is a whole new cast of supporting characters and only minor interactions with the previous ones, which is why you will be just fine starting here. (But really, go read the other because it is good!)
Carlos finds himself with his sister Angela at an LA Dodgers game, where Nik also is with her actor boyfriend of five months. It is said bf’s birthday, so he is also there with his friends. Nik is bored, until he tells her to pay attention and she sees a wedding proposal on the Jumbotron for her, name spelled incorrectly and all, and she is stunned. She says no, boyfriend storms off with his friends, and the whole stadium basically gives her the side eye. Enter Carlos and Angela to save the day and rescue her from further humiliation.
It just gets better and better from here, they hit it off and continue to see each other casually, and you probably know what happens next.
I loved everything about this one, the setup was wonderful, the female protagonist is strong, as are her friends, and Carlos is independent (but caring) as well. Jasmine writes such excellent characters, and I also love that she has integrated subplots within the narrative that are additive, such as the self-defense gym Nik and her friends start attending and how it came about.
Seriously, I cannot recommend this one enough! Pub date is October 30, so it will be an excellent palate cleanser from all the spooky books you have been reading!

I read I am always down for a good Mafia novel, and this one was no exception. November Road is fast paced, intense at times, and overall enjoyable. I read through this in a couple of sittings as I really did not want to put it down. There was conflict between regular families, mafia families, friends, you name it. It might be argued that the focus of the novel is on romance, but it was not too sappy and I quite liked it.
You really began to root for Frank even though he was not a ‘good’ protagonist. When the ‘bad guys’ were closing in I was flipping through the pages wondering how he would possibly evade them, again... I could even feel a little compassion for Barone, the hitman, maybe go as far as saying he had some decent qualities, until that scene, well, you know.
I liked that this did not end with a bow on it, but rather the way most folks would expect a mafia novel to end. The epilogue was even sweeter, but again, not what I was expecting.
This was my first novel by this author and it will not be my last. I recommend if you like mafia or crime novels especially, but it was an overall great thriller. Note that it’s not as gruesome throughout as ones like The Godfather, but there are still some scenes that should be satisfying for you.

There is some beautiful writing in this novel as the author works through all of this. That being said, I do not think this book was for me, although I can see how many people liked this one. The author inserts different insights on psychoanalysis throughout the novel, trying to show different perspectives, and I think if she had stuck with the regular storyline I would have liked that better. I also think the character was highly reflective, and maybe that was the intent, but at some point it was too much for me.

I was not sure how it would be to read nonfiction on the history of Oklahoma City, but it was truly an enjoyable and fascinating read! I loved how the author tied it all to the Oklahoma Thunder, but literally started from the beginning of when OKC was formed and covered ground on the key events to present day. I am from Dallas, so I am vaguely familiar with key events, such as weather, the bombing, the oil boom, etc., but I had no idea about the Land Run, sonic boom testing on residents (horrific), the Flaming Lips, and many other characters and events. This was a well written book that kept my attention, was not dry, and provided just enough detail that I felt I got a thorough explanation of everything I needed to know about this city. I am shocked at how much time Anderson spent in this town interviewing residents, researching stories, and even went on the walk by himself that the residents wanting to claim land during the Land Run would have had to do. Very impressive. I highly recommend this book even if you are not from Oklahoma, and even if you do not like the Flaming Lips!

I had heard good things but seriously had no idea what I was about to read. This is a bit of a look-back on high school life in small town Ohio, as four former classmates return to their hometown for different reasons one summer evening. The book is told in four parts, one from each person’s point of view of their journey and reason for being there that night. The author sets up brilliant transitions between each part, and running throughout the book, subtle at first and then building as you move to the end, is a mystery that one of the individuals is determined to solve.
