Finally, a decent Romeo and Juliet retelling (however loose) for me. I made it no secret that I dislike The Atlas Six because my brain just couldn't handle it, but I love Olivie's YA book (under the name Alexene F. Follmuth). So I decided to give her adult books another chance. I'm glad I picked this book because the writing was beautiful but still very much enjoyable.
In the gloomy streets of New York, live 2 families of witches: The Ferodovs and Antonovas. If you're familiar with typical Russian surnames, You'll notice the difference between those families. Yes, the Ferodovs are all men, meanwhile the Antonovas are all women. After 12 years in deadlock minding their own businesses, the long-standing rivalry between them finally progressed again.
The first few pages immediately gripped me. There's quite a lot of characters mentioned at the beginning but later they were properly introduced one character at a time so I had no problem recognizing them. The conflicts were a whirlwind of a man's greed, forbidden feelings, and dysfunctional families. I'd say that the setting is timeless, it's modern but felt historical at the same time. I loved the pace at the beginning but after 40 percent-ish it began to feel too slow, it took too long to resolve the plight and at the end I didn't feel any strong emotions about whatever happened. But some parts were fun to read (not in a happy way but more like amusing).
The magic system isn't really exceptional, not too detailed either. Each of the 7 Antonova sisters have a different kind of magic but I barely understand all of them because the story mainly focuses on Marya (the oldest) and Sasha (the youngest). I think there's not enough description about the Ferodovs magic, too. They're just like a family doing illegal business, not witches. Every character is unique but I like Lev Ferodov's personality the most.
Despite my rating and comments, somehow I still want to own the physical book...more

In this book, there's a procedure to remove heart and put it in numbing solution so the heart owner can still live but won't feel emotions. June, the MC, refused to have her heart removed. But she felt so lonely since everyone around her has removed their heart, including her family. She wanted to find a way to put her sister's heart back. Unexpectedly, she met Max and apparently they kinda had the same goal. So they worked together to figure things out.
Even though scientifically it's a bit unrealistic, it's still a beautiful and heartfelt story. I love the sketch-style illustration with minimal use colors that fits the gloomy atmosphere well. I wished the conclusion to be more detailed and a bit longer but overall I love this....more

This book was fun and hilarious. Wren and Pebble learned a lot of things related to math and science, with simple explanation. It's a nice educational book for young readers....more

When he wanted to make friends with a normal "giant" human, they chased him instead. when he attempted to escape through waterways, he ended up in a beach and meet a sea turtle named Lua. Lua offered to take Ember to an island where tiny and extraordinary creatures live, and he agreed. and so their trip began.
A heartwarming story about friendship and learning about mimicry along the way. Really love the illustrations that captured the vibes and setting perfectly....more

the references of Anne of Green Gables were rich but with subtle alterations to fit the book's theme. Grace is exactly like Anne: a super talkative orphan who thought that nobody wanted her, super dramatic, prone to mess up things but never meant to let anyone down. the friendship between Grace and her friends, especially Sareena, was so precious I was so afraid if something would happen to them. The ending was quite different from AoGG but I still love it, it just fits well while there's still loose aspect from the original tale. AoGG made me cry and so did this book.
TBH I still need to process everything so that's it for now. I love this book....more

I remembered nothing from my first read on the novel so it was truly fascinating to dive into the myth-infused magic system once again, and to be finally able to see the setting & character's visual. But with the limited space, the story somehow felt a little bit anticlimax and moving too fast.
But I still enjoyed it nonetheless. When can I expect the next book's graphic novel? ...more
