liked it

I don’t want to feel this way. I imagined being delighted and laughing out loud and so happy after reading this sequel. But even though I liked the story to a certain extent, it was not the fantastic blast I was expecting.

The Guncle was one of my favorite 2021 reads. I loved Patrick, Maisie, and especially ‘being mythelf’ Grant, who helped each other deal with their grief. I loved what a lighthearted read it was despite all the sadness. But while reading The Guncle Abroad, I missed Patrick’s caftans, his skin-rejuvenating masks, his Mimosa’s, the trouple living next to him, and Grant’s lisp (I know I shouldn’t miss it, but I really did …).

I also didn’t care much about the traveling part. It might be because I’m European and have seen all the places Patrick visited with Maisie and Grant. Those places felt too one dimensional, even cartoonish sometimes: The Sacre Coeur in Paris, Family von Trap in Salzburg, the gondolas in Venice, George Clooney living at Lake Como.

This doesn’t mean I didn’t like the story at all. I loved the first chapter, I adored the ending, and Emory is, this time, my favorite. I treasured the way Patrick taught the kids about love and how Maisie and Grant stood up for Emory. And there’s a Launt!!!!

The last third of the book was actually really good and I felt like I was reading The Guncle again. But that’s not enough to gush about a book, right?

Maybe I was just in the wrong headspace to read this one. I don’t know. What I do know is that I long for a third book with Emory in the lead. Not just a few pages but a full story. I imagine Maisie being a twenty-one-year-old college student who just beats her uncle in their conversations because she actually always knows better and Grant being a moody sixteen-year-old because of the hormones running through his body. So, Steven, could you please give me that book? One that I could rate five stars again?

Thank you so much, Penguin Group, Putnam Books, and NetGalley for one of my most anticipated 2024 ARCs!

~Nicole~ Fabulous review, Marieke. I too was expecting a 5 stars review from you for this and I imagined it laughing out loud hilarious . Sorry this wasn’t as good as the first one. I have yet to read The guncle, it’s been sitting on my tbr for some time 🫣❤️

Drakoulis I haven't read the 1st book (or this ARC) but what you mention about European landmarks being presented one-dimensional (or I would say a fairytale fantastic version of them) I have noticed it in other books by American authors too. Especially if said places are Paris or Italy.

Yeah, I agree. It's just like there's just one thing those places are familiar of (like George Clooney and Lake Como....).

Thanks, Nicole! I adored The Guncle and now I hardly laughed about the story. I really expected this to be at least a four star read. Maybe I should reread it in the summer.

Drache.... (Angelika) Great review, Marieke! I admit I haven't even read The Guncle (yet), oops. Sorry this was not what you had hoped for. Fingers crossed for your next read!

You should definitely read The Guncle someday, Angelika! It's fantastic!

Drache.... (Angelika) Argghhh Marieke I'll have to ask for more than 24 hours a day, where do I apply??

😂😂😂 I want to apply too! There are just too many books and there's too little time!

Amina Wonderful review, Marieke! I am sorry this wasn't as enjoyable as the first one, though. More often than not, that does happen to me, as well - it's either the expectation is too high or something just doesn't sit right with you, yourself. Really hope you're enjoying your current read much more. 😊

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @Amina, it might be just me. I love my current read even less 😭.

Luvredandwhite I’m 52% of the way through it and am struggling a bit. I’m glad to hear the final third is really good!

I hope it will pick up for you! Curious about your thoughts when you've finished it!

Nicole Leigh Reads Great, thoughtful review! I appreciate the honesty of your review. Unfortunately The Guncle didn't land the best with me, I gave it 3 stars. I was wondering if the sequel might be better, but I hold your opinion of it in high regard as someone who loves the first one. I think I will pass. Thanks for being such a thorough reviewer!

Sorry Nicole, I just found out you commented on my review. Thanks anyway! and yeah, if you didn't like The Guncle, I don't thing you'll like this one either.

Christina Agreed. Glad Im not just being a Scrooge. This book had none of the heart of the first one. It just took the characters and took away the character moments. The focus was on the scenery and pop culture references. I was looking forward to reading this and it really let me down.

Yeah, I hated that I didn't like this book as much as I loved the prequel. But somehow, I still long for a third book because I want to feel again what I felt after that first one.

Megan I’m not enjoying this either. I like parts of it, mostly the dynamic with Patrick and the kids. I’m a bit disappointed and feel like I need to reread The Guncle for a palette cleanser.

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @megan, so sorry you’re not enjoying this either. I keep hoping there will be a third book and I can rate that one a beautiful five stars!

Jessica Krueger Muir This review gives me hope. I was so worried it was just me. I’m 1/3 in, and am struggling…

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @Jessica, yeah, I hope you’ll love the last part of the story, though!

message 21: by Robin (new) - added it

Robin Thank you! I thought it was just me. I LOVED the Guncle but this one felt like the author was trying too hard. I had to re-read sentences and didn't like all the references (especially the ones I didn't get, lol)
I did really like the end of the book though

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @Robin, so sorry you felt the same way. I really hoped other people would love this one as much as the first one!

Sherita You put into words exactly how I felt after reading this sequel!!

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @sherita, I’m still hoping for a third book in this series and that that one will feel like the first one!

Kelly Desmarais Agreed! It was a bit underwhelming for me 😕

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) Kelly wrote: "Agreed! It was a bit underwhelming for me 😕"

Sorry it was a bit underwhelming for you too, Kelly. The Guncle is such a great book, though!

Mallory Maahs I felt this way too!

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @Mallory, I’m sorry you feel this way too.

message 29: by Long (new) - added it

Long Nguyen Oh oh. I was looking forward to reading this book 😭

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @Long, you might love it more than I did!

Pauline I couldn’t agree more! I loved all the ‚now‘- chapters but the leading up to the wedding… not so much. Too many references, too many long scenes that didn’t add to the plot. The last third though?! Absolutely amazing and full of the ‚guncle‘ feeling! Aaah, I’m conflicted 🙈

message 32: by Shirley (new)

Shirley Goldberg I feel the same way. I am reading the book right now and you have convinced me not to stop! Thank you.

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @shirley, I only found your comment today. I hope you finished the book by now and that you loved it in the end.

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @pauline, I only found your comment today. Happy you loved the last third too!

MarcoNotPolo Omg I completely agree with everything you said! I’m hopeful for another one that captures the magic of the first.

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @MarcoNotPolo, yeah, I really hope we’ll get another one that captures that magic!

Cindy Me too

Shelby I too have just a bit of disappointment, sequels rarely live up to expectations. I agree with you … ending was amazing, leaves me waiting for another …
I did live the part where they were dancing around the fountain on their Sound of Music tour …

Natalie S. This is so funny to me, I also felt this was just okay, also gave it 3 stars—but where you liked the last 1/3 I felt it was rushed once things actually started happening!

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @Cindy, sorry you felt the same way. I keep hoping other people liked it more than I did!

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @Natalie, oh no! I kind of hate it that we all only think this book is okay.

Marieke (mariekes_mesmerizing_books) @Shelby, happy you loved the dancing. I still hope for a third book with the magic of the first one, but maybe I shouldn’t hope.

Kelsie This is exactly how I felt

Alana White You put it into words...:)
