Discovering the Impact of Habits on Sleep Recently I've been wearing the ŌURA ring, and it has been super helpful in understanding how even small habits like snacking or having a glass of wine late at night can impact my sleep. I was shocked to discover that my nighttime habits impacted my resting heart rate, heart rate variability, body temperature, and respiratory rate. Although it seemed intuitive, it was still surprising to see the actual effects. 🤯 With the insights the ŌURA ring provides, I am now making better lifestyle choices that affect my rest and productivity the next day. Curious if there is anything that surprised others after tracking sleep behavior with a wearable device. Please feel free to comment below. #sleeproutine #sleepbetter #sleephealth

Sleep trackers, whether standalone devices or features in wearable tech, offer insightful data into our nocturnal patterns. They monitor the duration of our sleep, its quality, and even the various sleep stages—light, deep, and REM. By capturing these nuances, they provide a comprehensive view of our sleep health. Why does this matter? If you're consistently waking up fatigued, a tracker might reveal you're missing out on vital deep sleep. Or you may be in bed for 8 hours but only sleeping soundly for 5. With this data, you can implement changes, adjust your bedtime routine, room environment, or seek medical advice. Moreover, these devices often have smart alarms designed to wake you during lighter sleep. This can lead to mornings where you feel refreshed rather than groggy. #symplicitywellness #sleep #bedtimeroutine #oolacoach #happysleeping

Still Thinking about 8 hrs of sleep = standard perfect sleep? Time to update 💫 This seems to emphasize too much for the quantity, not the quality. People, time to add a new dimensions in this statement: Quality. Nowadays, there are many wearables that could help you out on this. While they are not 100% accurate (well, nothing is...), they do give good reference on how recovered your body truly is. My favourite ones are OURA & WHOOP. Hence, I do use both nightly to give me some data on where I'm on my cognitive performance scale. Btw, the above statement doesn't include people's unique body clock, chronotype. if you wanna wanna know yours. Click the link below! 🌟 https://buff.ly/3OcP7dH

Human Performance Scientist | Keynote Speaker | Consultant & Advisor | Empowering knowledge workers with science-based tools to achieve sustainable high performance
Where you live affects how you sleep. I work with clients across the world, & when I’ve looked at group-level trends in wearable data, I’ve noticed differences in sleep habits. However, until recently, few large-scale studies had evaluated sleep variability, either across the workweek or in terms of differences in weekday & weekend sleep, using objective measures. A recent study (Willoughby et al., 2023) took advantage of the growing number of wearable devices to examine 50 million nights of sleep gathered from ~220,000 wearable device (Oura ring) users in 35 countries. What did they find? Nocturnal sleep duration & efficiency were shorter in Asia than in other regions. Weekend sleep extension was longer in Europe & the USA than in Asia. There were also cross-country differences in social jetlag (a discrepancy between our social & biological clocks). The authors note these regional differences may reflect the under-appreciated cultural differences. For example, the observance of dawn prayers, after which some people return to sleep, is more common in the Middle East. As global employers are increasingly interested in improving their employees’ sleep, they must consider these local factors. ❓Have you noticed any differences in sleep habits around the world? #workplacewellbeing #wellbeingatwork #wellbeing #performance ------ I'm James, a speaker & scientist who equips knowledge workers with science-based tools to improve their wellbeing & performance. Founder & CEO @ Cozy Ventures 🦄 ML | AI | Backend | Web | Mobile Have a tech challenge? Deploy our software engineers today!
This Friday, I want to hone in on one of the most crucial aspects of our lives: sleep. 💤 It's a common misconception that the less you sleep, the more you can accomplish in a day. However, it's a trap you shouldn't fall into, a pitfall even experienced by notable figures like Bill Gates. In his 30s and 40s, the billionaire Microsoft co-founder engaged in a competition with peers to see who could endure the least sleep, wearing it as a badge of honor for productivity. He proudly declared, "I only sleep six hours," escalating to rival claims of "I only sleep five!" and "Sometimes I don't sleep at all!" 😵 For Gates, sleep became synonymous with laziness and excess. A pivotal shift occurred in Gates' perspective when his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. This prompted him to recognize the role of sleep as a predictive factor for dementia, including Alzheimer's. Research supports this, revealing that older adults sleeping less than five hours per night are twice as likely to develop dementia or face mortality within five years compared to those sleeping six to eight hours. ⌛ Gates, now committed to a minimum of seven hours of sleep each night, underscores the importance of monitoring one's "sleep scores" daily. These scores assess how well the body recuperates overnight, factoring in both the duration and quality of sleep. While Gates didn't specify his tracking method, various wearable devices, such as Fitbits or Apple Watches, offer this capability. Ultimately, for Gates, a good night's sleep is deemed "super important." 💯 On a personal note, I've already recognized the benefits of an 8-hour sleep, and they far outweigh the questionable productivity of those extra two hours, while trying to stay alive via connection to your coffee mug. ☕ #TechInsights #LifeStyle #SleepWell
