For all of you that say the hub doesn’t matter.

pacoii
commented

The iOS 18 preferred hub feature will only serve as a bandaid to ‘fix’ what is likely a poor WiFi network. HomePods may not have as much horsepower as an Apple TV, but If devices are going no response when using a HomePod, you’ve likely got WiFi issues.

From HomeDevices digest, their note about it only coming to Matter plugs is interesting …

pacoii
replied to moseschrute19

In my own unscientific research, I’ve found that too many Thread routers was actually causing Thread instability. I now only use Thread router smart plugs in areas with poorer Thread coverage, and in areas around my Home Hubs I am actively replacing them with Matter over WiFi plugs. Hopefully someday these Thread mesh kinks will get worked out.

I’ve been recently swapping out some of my Eve Energy plugs for Kasa Matter over WiFi plugs, and they work great even with internet fully blocked.

That would seem likely. Why would Apple want to maintain two ecosystems. But I also don’t think they will stop supporting HomeKit devices any time soon.

Discussion

Apple plans to introduce consumption measurement for Matter outlets with iOS 17.6. Until now, users could only view power consumption through manufacturer apps. Developers can already access the new feature. However, an update to the Home app before iOS 18 is unlikely. The feature is expected to be available only for Matter accessories and not for HomeKit outlets.

Only time will tell of course, but it would be interesting if we’ve hit an inflection point where Matter accessories support more features than the HomeKit equivalent.

I get wanting to be an early adopter, but it would make me crazy to have an unstable HomeKit home running a beta. Much respect to those of you willing to test for the rest of us.

Same. I typically end the month at around 1TB with the 200GB ‘buffer’.

I agree with you in terms of HomePod minis being low power CPU-wise, but stand by my original comment that the core issue for most people having issues with a HomePod being their primary hub is due to a terrible WiFi setup.

Question for Unifi AP users: does mDNS need to be enabled in both Firewalla as well as Unifi?

Question for Unifi AP users: does mDNS need to be enabled in both Firewalla as well as Unifi?

pacoii
replied to khariV

In the Unifi app it is a toggle (on/off). Where do you have it set to automatic? And more importantly is does it even need to be enabled in the Unifi controller if Firewalla is routing and enabled in Firewalla?

Schlage Encode Plus lock question

pacoii

Assuming you have a Thread compatible Apple home hub near the lock, I’d reset the lock and first add it to the Home app to ensure it is using Thread and not WiFi.

I need advice on best wired Doorbell Camera and smart lock that integrate well together and with Apple HomeKit

pacoii
replied to supertomcat

Battery based Thread devices do not extend the Thread mesh network. IME HomePods and Apple TVs are best at extending, with Thread border devices like Eve Energy or Onvis Smart Plug filling gaps.

Is Nest Doorbell + Starling and Schlage Encode Plus the best Camera and smart lock combo?

I know OP said cost wasn’t an issue, but it’s important to mention the additional hardware that would be required for the Unifi doorbell, including the hardware needed for Unifi Protect and recording, as well as homebridge/scryptd.

Is Nest Doorbell + Starling and Schlage Encode Plus the best Camera and smart lock combo?

pacoii
commented

Door lock: yes to the SEP (assuming a thread compatible home hub is close enough)

Doorbell: more complicated. Cost might not be a factor but you’ll pay an annual subscription fee for the Nest. I recently moved from the Netatmo to the Logitech because I wanted HKSV. The Logitech has been working great and I’ve come to really appreciate the color night time video. In my two months of use no over heating for me.
