Is SAM-E still believed to work?

I remember SAM-E was big in the 90's. It was thought to be a miracle supplement for pretty much everything and seemed pretty expensive back then. I don't hear about it much any more. Does anyone here take it? Does it get broken down in stomach? What's the best form to take? I'm thinking of trying to help my mind with it. My grandma had Alzheimer's and I'd like to prevent it or at least slow it down.

Works well but can come with side effects and tolerance. I like to take it in short cycles nowadays when im feeling low. Most often in winter I sometimes dose it a week with TMG and B complex, after which I feel a lot better for awhile.

The worst side effect for me was stomach issues

How much time to achieve tolerance?

I used to take it when I had pretty bad SAD, and it worked amazingly, much better than any antidepressants. I’ve since gotten my health under control, fixed my nutrition, and moved to a better climate, so my SAD is very mild, almost nonexistent, now. I don’t take SAM-e anymore, but I would in a heartbeat if I felt my SAD return.

I take it. Helps me

SAME-e was a miracle for me but I no longer seem to need it as much ever since I optimised my methylation in general. I have a chronic disease that depletes my methyl groups and still use it whenever I feel like I need it.

If you decide to use it, make sure you are supplementing its co-factor nutrients: Methyl B12, methylfolate, and B6 (P5P). These nutrients are important for the methylation cycle in general.

For preventing over-methylation (which is bound to happen at some point when you supplement methyl donors), you need to make sure your glycine buffer system is working: Adequate glycine, vitamin A, iron, riboflavin, and folate are needed. This will also help to store excess methyl groups & retrieve them when you need them.

Source: Most of this info I learnt from Chris Masterjohn and has personally been true in my experience.

Where are excess methyl groups stored?

When i did some research on it and took it a few years ago there seemed to be reasonable evidence that it can work as an antidepressant. Most people take it as tablets. Quite expensive for a supplement but presumably worth it if it works. Didn't work for me though. Can be quite stimulating as well.

See, I have diverticulitis and tablets usually don't get digested. I had a logjam of a ton of tablets years ago in bowels. You could see it when they scanned my body. I try to do capsules for everything now.

Just googled and seems like most brands are capsules. But one of the search results was a Guardian article "Biologists warn against toxic SAMe ‘health’ supplement", which is concerning.

Well you have to take these doctors warning articles with a grain of salt.. I have came across a few that said I don't need supplements for anything and it's a waste of money.. but he's willing to prescribe me tons of stuff from him..
