Presents & messages

The Wikidata distributed event is a decentralized event where all local groups, organizations or community members around the world can organise their own event! In 2020, due to the COVID-19 health situation, most events are expected to happen online. This is the opportunity to share your birthday celebration to the rest of the community! Meetups, workshops, discussions, podcasts... a variety of formats are possible. On this page, we will summarize the information you need to start or continue planning an event for Wikidata's 8th birthday.

Projects and unscheduled events

[edit]

If you're the owner of one of these projects, please move it to the calendar when the details are ready!

Connect with other organizers

✉️ Join the Telegram group

There are many people interested in Wikidata events or working on their own event for the birthday. In order to get answers to your questions and get inspiration from others, feel free to join the dedicated Telegram group Wikidata events or to use the talk page. Regularly, we host an organizers call where you can ask questions and connect with others.

Communication kit

[edit]

In 2020, the global situation makes it difficult to organize onsite events and to send around swag items all over the world. This is the reason why Wikimedia Germany will not send any Wikidata birthday swag to event organizers this year. However, we designed for you a digital communication kit, that you can reuse as you wish: you can print your own swag locally, based on your needs and what makes the most sense for your event. Feel free to use these visuals on stickers, mugs... or on your digital communication (slides, background for livestream, etc.)

Logos, banner and background

[edit]

The official logo of Wikidata's 8th birthday as well as a background picture have been designed by user:Bleeptrack. You can find it on Commons in various formats, under the CC0 license.

Funding

[edit]

Wikimedia Germany cannot fund any project taking place outside of Germany. If you're living in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, please check this page.

Rapid Grant

[edit]

Groups or individuals who need funding to run their event are welcome to apply to WMF's Rapid Grant program. Please read the details of the guidelines carefully, as well as the list of countries where funding is possible. Below is a summary of what you should know:

  • If you're planning an event in October, please consider applying before September 15th. After that, the grant team cannot ensure that the funding will arrive on time. If your event is very late October or beginning of November, you can apply until October 15th.
  • Grants must be between 500 USD and 2000 USD
  • Rapid Grants can cover online events. For in-person events, the Wikimedia Foundation is developing an assessment tool that will help you decide whether it is appropriate to run an event given risks and local conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. This tool is expected to be available in September 2020. (source)
  • Rapid Grants can cover a wide range of costs, both from the organizers and the participants' side: subscription to a streaming service, printing swag, data plan, communication costs, translation, prizes for contest winners... for more details, please read the funding guidelines.
  • To get more details about Rapid Grants, please contact rapidgrants@wikimedia.org

WikiCite grant

[edit]

WikiCite is currently offering two types of grants - project & events (minimum $2k USD equivalent) and e-scholarships (per-diem living allowance for 'stay at home' projects - 1-5 people for 2-4 days). Application deadline is 1 October.
Activities in association with the Wikidata 8th Birthday are eligible for these grants as long as they relate to the purpose of WikiCite - Open citations and linked bibliographic data.
WikiCite will also be participating directly in the birthday [more news soon].

Ideas of events

[edit]

The main goals of the Wikidata Birthday 2020 are:

  • share knowledge among your local community: encourage people to share what they know about Wikidata and its related tools, what people who went at the WikidataCon 2019 learnt from it, etc.
  • onboard new people: introduce new people to Wikidata!
  • celebrate the achievements of volunteers with your local community

Examples of events (note: many of these examples can be adapted with an online format):

  • Livestream: editing Wikidata & demoing tools
  • Livestream: SPARQL introduction
  • Meetup in your town with your local community (if your local safety rules allow it)
  • An introduction to Wikidata for beginners
  • Hackathon to reuse data from Wikidata
  • Translathon to improve the labels of Wikidata in your language
  • Kick-off a Wikidata section in your user group
  • Give an introduction to Wikidata to a local partner (university, library...)
  • Wikibase install-party

You can also look at events organized for the previous birthdays for inspiration: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and the documentation page for remote events.
