Description

Bracket Semaphore signal at Israel Railways Museum in Haifa. The explanation on the sign reads: "Train movements are governed by special signalling systems to ensure safety. When the signal arm is at horizontal the train must stop. When the arm is lowered the train may pass the signal. In hours of darkness a red light is displayed to show STOP, while a green light means GO.

This signal, which has more than one arm, is called a Bracket Signal. The left-hand arm relates to the left-hand track and the right arm relates to the right-hand track. The lower arm with the circle is for shunting purposes only within the station limits. The signal displayed here once controlled trains leaving Haifa East for the south. It dates from the mid-1930s. The small lower arm was added in the 1950s to facilitate shunting work. The signal was in use until 1994 when it was replaced by electrically operated colour light signals."
