It is currently accepted as a custom property name, and the CSS WG just resolved to reserve it for future use, and thus it should be made invalid for now. See https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/2692#issuecomment-395247646

I think this should be fairly low risk, let's try to get it done sooner
