It would be nice if the encoding would be automatically set depending on who's
sending the message. So if I have a Bulgarian friend, the encoding would be
automatically set to Windows 1251 because I would have said so in her Address
Book entry.
Another idea would be to get Mozilla to remember which was the codepage used to
see a particular message the last time it was seen. That wouldn't be as nice as
have it automatically set in a per sender basis, but it could solve the problem
of doing it everytime you want to see a foreign mail message.

Please note that if the message has a correct charset specified then Mozilla
uses it. The problem is for only non standard mails.

There is a way to set a default charset as a folder property. So it is possible
to filter by sender and put to a specific folder (e.g. a folder with default
charset to windows-1251).

Thank you, I didn't know that about folders, that could be useful for me
regarding this problem. This happens when the mail comes from webmails like
Hotmail and Yahoo, where there's no mail composer and therefore no codepage
specified. So "non-standard mails" are fairly common, unfortunately.
Hotmail supports Latin1 languages and Chinese (Simplifed and Traditional),
Japanese, Korean. I don't see support for windows-1251.
Yahoo mail, Japanese is supported but don't know about others.
Windows-1251 is Latin1, AFAIK.
Windows-1251 is a Cyrillic codepage, while Latin1 has only Roman letters, called
Windows-1252.
