When receiving a mail with a read confirmation request, I click ok (read confirmation will be sent), but I've configured the wrong SMTP server (I'm at different locations all the time). A pop-up screen appears:

"THIS IS JUST A PLACEHOLDER. YOU SHOULD NEVER SEE THIS STRING"

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. configure non working SMTP server
2. Accept an email with a read confirmation
3. Accept to send the confirmation
4. An error will occur that this message could not be sent (ok)
5. After this an error occurs saying: "THIS IS JUST A PLACEHOLDER. YOU SHOULD NEVER SEE THIS STRING"
Actual Results:
Confirmation wasn't sent. TB continued to work fine

Expected Results:
Either show something that makes sense or show nothing after the first err. message that already says it all.

Though this is in fact a cosmetic problem, it scares the hell out of me: "...YOU SHOULD NEVER SEE THIS STRING", What happens if I do ?

Yeah, I got the same problem recently. For me, it happened because my SMTP server requires POP before SMTP, and when I hit the "Send Receipt" button the mail server returned an error.

It is not just a cosmetic problem. Once you hit "Send Receipt", the option to send a receipt disappears and cannot be brought back.

What needs to be done:

1) The message needs to be changed to say something like "Unable to send return receipt. Please fix your outgoing mail settings and then try again."
2) The option to either ignore the receipt or to send the receipt needs to be re-enabled on the message for which the button was pressed.

Alternative steps to reproduce (Thunderbird 8.0, Windows XP SP3):

1. Receive a message with a bad Disposition-Notification-To field like the one in the attached example (just a vendor's advertising message -- no privacy worries).

The first error message (more or less as expected) is:

An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.1.3 Invalid address. Please check the message recipient ""\"\"\" Irina.Ryabushenko \" <irina\"@vitasmlab.com>\"\"@sr48maunakea.caregroup.org" and try again.

The second error message (unexpected) is:

THIS IS JUST A PLACEHOLDER. YOU SHOULD NEVER SEE THIS STRING.

Note: After the above happens, Thunderbird 8.0 does have buttons for "Ignore" and "Send Return Receipt" in the message's toolbar (not if the message is saved as a *.eml and then opened), but I haven't tried whether these appear with bad SMTP settings or no connection (the same buttons SHOULD appear in those cases).
I suppose duplicate bug implies confirmation.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
This error message comes from the C++ error code NS_ERROR_BUT_DONT_SHOW_ALERT which only occurs in sending operations. I believe that SMTP is supposed to handle this error itself, and not ever show this string, so showing the string is an error.

We could either figure out where error handling is failing, or change the string. I suppose since the comments claim reproducible STR, we should trace out where normal error handling is failing.
Removing myslef on all the bugs I'm cced on. Please NI me if you need something on MailNews Core bugs from me.
For such an old bug, I'm surprised I got it.

I got an email asking for a confirmation, tried to send the confirmation and it failed. I then got the dialog box entitled "Send Message Error" with the text

"THIS IS JUST A PLACEHOLDER. YOU SHOULD NEVER SEE THIS STRING."

Thunderbird 52.2.1 (64-bit)
Xubuntu 14.04.5

I have just tried the process again and the error message on trying to send the receipt was:

Alert
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5ua01w0031SLAvE01ua2Pu message rejected due to spam or virus. If you believe this is in error please login to your portal or contact your ISP support team.. Please check the message and try again.

When I click on OK I get the "THIS IS JUST A PLACEHOLDER. YOU SHOULD NEVER SEE THIS STRING." dialog box.

same as above using Thunderbird 60.4.0 (64-bit), gentoo 17.0

Evidence of the error message still appearing.

Received the same "Send Message Error", "THIS IS JUST A PLACEHOLDER. YOU SHOULD NEVER SEE THIS STRING." message from ThunderBird 78.11.0 (64 bit) on Xubuntu 18.04.5 (LTS).

I am currently testing migration of my mail hosting from one provider to another and sending emails to those accounts with Return Receipt on and Delivery Status Notification on. I have emails being lost and emails bouncing; this message popping up is actually a really inconvenient and distracting error to come up when using ThunderBird to diagnose faults elsewhere.
