Photos of Cincinnati bridges

Hi. I'd like to thank you for contributing your photos to the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge Wikipedia article. I'm planning to write articles about Cincinnati's other Ohio River bridges sometime soon, so if you have any photos of them, or get the chance to take any, they would be of great assistance. Thanks, --taestell

Dual-licensing of Image:Landschaft Zug.jpg

Hi Tysto, I want to ask you for your permission to dual-license Image:Landschaft Zug.jpg under GFDL and cc-by-sa-2.0-de. It becomes necessary because I uploaded your modified version of the original image and therefore you have to agree too. Furthermore I want to ask you, if you could apply the same techniques to Image:Landschaft 2 Zug.jpg. Thanks in advance. --Baikonur 13:12, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

 • Yes, of course! It never occurred to me otherwise. I assumed the original photo was licensed with the requirement that all derivitive works were also free, anyway. I really only made the change so it would look a little nicer as my wallpaper! These are beautiful images. I think all I did to the original was apply a fill flash. A new version of the new one is here: Landschaft 2 Zug.jpg --Tysto 15:16, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your permisson, your modified image and your fast reaction. :-) The original photo was indeed licensed with the requirement that all derivitive works were also free, but only under the terms of the GFDL. The GFDL however is not always practical. If you want to print an image licensed unter the GFDL according to the license terms you have to also print the whole license and not only a note that this image is licensed under the GFDL. Someone who want to use an image licesend as cc-by-sa does not has this problem. Therefore it is strongly recommended to dual-license your images under GFDL and cc-by-sa. See Commons:Village pump archive-13#Why the Wikimedia projects (and especially commons) should not use the GFDL as a stand alone license for more information. Because I wanted to dual-license the image under an additonal license I had to ask you for permission. Best regards --Baikonur 18:05, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Nanjing Road photo

Hi. Thanks for the link to the edited photo, it looks much better. I think I'll upload it in place of the old one. Sadly I have no idea about photo editing, so I couldn't do anything like that. And the photo wasn't perfect because it was one of the first photos taken by my wife with her newly bought camera, but I like it very much anyway. ;-) --P.B. 22:03, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You say.... " I suggest a bit of fill flash filter to bring out the people"

Yes, technically. But can you imagine. The view is that of extreme reverence and peace. This is single event every year, and in England, for a change(!!) it was not cloudy!

Personally, I like dark and the light.... LoopZilla 2005-07-01 07:52:05 (UTC)

I looked at the flash fill you did for Image:Street_motorbyke_ice.jpg and I still prefer the orginal. But I think you comments are great - we agree!!! So nice!! LoopZilla 2005-07-01 08:10:49 (UTC)

aerial photography

I don't think its a waste of time. But you should clarify if the photos are only US cities or global cities. Thanks Nichalp July 9, 2005 05:01 (UTC)

Thanks! I only fly over US cities, and mostly Indiana right now. But I would encourage anyone to take aerial photos of any cities listed in Wikipedia. My view is that having any photos of towns and cities improves the articles, with ground photos of landmarks being best (see my home town of Bremen, Indiana) but I can take pictures of dozens of cities from the air that I'll never actually visit. I'll add these clarifiers to my progress page. --Tysto 03:53, 11 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
That's a really small town! Here's an aerial shot of my city [1], and yes, it does give an edge to the location, especially if the roads and buildings can be seen clearly. Nichalp 18:32, July 11, 2005 (UTC)
Unfortunately that's not my image :( so I can't add it to wikipedia. It could be a FP though, if the photographer would allow its use here. A anon had posted the link to the w:Mumbai page about a month back. Nichalp 05:29, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Hy Tysto, I don't "deny" you anything, and this is nothing personal at all, but I do think we need a guidline for something like that. Mostly, these issues are (sadly) only looked at by a considerable enough number of people if put on "deletion requests", so please don't be angry at me. --AndreasPraefcke 15:35, 22 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

 • I'm sure it's not personal, but requesting my user category be deleted is an attempt to deny me the use of a user category. I couldn't just create another one without expecting that it would also be deleted. For my justification for categorizing my photos with my user name in the first place, please refer to this discussion: Commons:Village_pump#User_categories.

Gamla photos

I would like to thank you about your enhancements to my photos. :) I'm at the first time with digital cameras and never used programs like gimp. Just a question: the photos was terrific about the dominants or about the subject? :) --EdoM 14:43, 31 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

 • I don't know anything about Gamla. I just liked the photos. They were big and clear and illustrated the subject very well. :-) --Tysto 02:46, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi, this is io:user:mithridates from the Ido Wikipedia. I've been translating and uploading articles on cities for the past month or so and have gotten up to Indiana - I have an automatic translater for most of the content (statistics and whatnot) and the rest I write myself, but I just delete images if they aren't on the Commons. Nice to see that you've taken so many photos as it really improves the look of the pages I'm putting up.

You're welcome! I have a passing interest in Ido myself. I'll take a look at the pages. --Tysto 16:14, 4 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Oh, that's good to hear. Most people have never heard of the language or they think it has something to do with Ibo. Last week somebody decided to publish a mystery novel of theirs in the language, and there was another podcast this morning somebody recorded so it's quite nice to see. I didn't know about it until April this year myself but I'm pretty sure it almost died before the internet came around. I've finished all the cities in Indiana and am doing Iowa - pretty much no pictures whatsoever. Ah well. mithridates

Assuming you're doing them alphabetically, then I hope to have northeastern Ohio pretty well documented by the time you get to it. I'm a travelin' man, and I've made a lot of stops.... --Tysto 18:38, 7 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Image grapes -> elderberries

Hi Tysto - i'm an amateur on this field, but the plant on this image looks more like an elderberry. I don't think the image shows grapes ... the leaves look completly different to vine-leafes. Greetings, -- Schusch 21:09, 19 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I had asked for confirmation on grape when I initially posted it, but this is the first response I've heard. --Tysto 03:11, 20 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

aerial photos

Tysto, do you think it would be possible to take some aerial photos of Chicago (like your photo of Indianapolis) and maybe some of its suburbs? Thanks, Dralwik 16:36, 22 December 2005 (UTC).Reply

Unfortunately, I haven't been flying that way and don't expect to for some time. I take pictures from commercial airplanes I fly on for business, and I'm therefore kind of at the mercy of my work schedule. Plus, my current project is close enough to drive to, so I'm not flying at all lately. --Tysto 16:58, 22 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Oh, okay. Well, good luck on your current project (and keep the photos coming:). Dralwik 02:33, 23 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi, it's been a few months since I've logged in to the commons here. I haven't had a lot of pic taking time, so I actually just got your message about the courthouse. Looks great. But if you're interested in that, you might also like to see this Image:DeRidderJail.jpg. That's the really interesting one. I have a bunch of pics of it from different angles and inside as well. Just showing off my pics and thought you might be interested. --DanielCD 17:18, 15 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I love what you did with the picture i uploaded of the temple in Esztergom. what program did you use to enchance the picture? I could use one like this at home! Thanks! Villy 02:34, 3 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

 • Thanks! I happen to use Paint Shop Pro because it's inexpensive and I've been upgrading to new versions for several years. "retouched picture"

Hello, I think you improved Image:Meteora Kloster Varlaam.jpg a bit too much ;-) The contrast is fairly too high, e.g. the edges of the buildings look worse than before ... could you please rework it? --Überraschungsbilder 19:05, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

 • Hi Überraschungsbilder; sorry you don't like the result. I've played with it again and I can't satisfy myself. The original is rather low resolution, and I'm afraid that any enhancement of contrast is likely to emphasize the JPEG artifacting. If you don't have a higher resolution version to upload, please feel free to revert. --Tysto 01:13, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Flying pig

You said: "I believe that the purpose of an encyclopedia is to document everything that is notable, not everything that is true. I believe that non-notable articles hurt Wikipedia's performance, confuse casual users, and make it harder for people to find genuinely valuable information." Is your article about flying pigs genuinely valuable information? I'd like to know why :) Nothing personal of course, and by the way, I am not a deletionist

I'd say it just qualifies, given that it's a common expression and has several touchpoints of cultural significance. I mean, hey, there are statues of them in Cincinnati, and Pink Floyd has giant balloons of them. They obviously have some notability. --Tysto 00:33, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

How do I cite the owner of a photo on my webpage?

Hi Tysto, I'm working on a webpage for a non-profit group in Cincinnati. I would like to use some of your photos of Cincinnati. According to Creative Commons Attribution 2.0: Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor. On your photo of the Roebling bridge for example you don't give any instructions. Can I just mention your name as the photographer?--Morphaeous 15:43, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Morphaeous-- I've had several requests to use my photos for projects from my site (Tysto.com) and this site. I always allow them to be used freely and for any purpose by anyone. For that reason, I've been putting public domain tags on all my Wiki Commons photos for months but I think the Roebling Suspension Bridge was one of the first, so I'll change it. I appreciate the offer of a photo credit, tho; something like "photo by Derek Jensen" is appropriate but by no means necessary. --Tysto 20:51, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image Tagging Image:Projection-screen-home.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Projection-screen-home.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hello, Tysto!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Pulp-mag-flynns-detective-fic.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

My employer, the Indiana Historical Society, based in Indianapolis, would like to use this aerial image of Wabash in print and digital publications being created as a free supplemental textbook for Indiana high school students. The release dated is slated for 2014. I understand that you have placed this image in the public domain. What should we include in the credit line for the image? Congratulations!

This has got to be the worst photograph that I have ever seen of this building! While there is some artistic merit in the use of perspective to redefine reality and cause us to think about what it is that we are actually seeing, this representation of the building totally distorts its immensity. Great work getting it on the U.S. Steel page as the only representation of the building on it! No wonder people mock the wiki. Thanks! 12:32, 19 June 2014 (UTC) Rob Pommer

What the fuck is your problem, asshole? Take a better one. --Tysto (talk) 05:17, 22 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
