Requesting move to Category:Singar Mosque per en:WP:COMMONNAME and merge of Category:Singair Mosque to the new category. Transliterations vary. Sources that use "Singar" include [1][2][3][4][5] and [6]. One encyclopedia uses "Singra".[7] One scholar uses "Shingra". Physical signage at the mosque uses "Singair". No reliable source uses "Singara". Worldbruce (talk) 02:02, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
- You are right. I must have made the spelling mistake when I created the category. Department of Archaeology also uses Singar. I'm performing the move soon as it is rather uncontroversial. Thanks. ~ Nahid Talk 07:31, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

There are two James Hamptons, one an actor and one an artist. This category has merged both. I don’t work on Commons much, so please ping me when you reply. Gorthian (talk) 03:36, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support and move to Category:James Hampton (actor) per Wikipedia. Gorthian I don't think this is controversial so you could probably just do it unless you're unsure which topic some of the files are for. Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:08, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
- I’m sorry, it’s been so long since I edited here that I bungled it. Now Category:James Hampton is a subcategory of Category:James Hampton (actor). @Crouch, Swale: , would you be able to correct my mistake? Gorthian (talk) 03:22, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Gorthian: Category:James Hampton is now a DAB page, I've moved the files to Category:James Hampton (actor) but if any are for a different person then you can move them to another category. Crouch, Swale (talk) 07:36, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

from Category talk:Interiors of Titanic (ship, 1912)
@Javier0203 and Stunteltje: enwiki uses the name en:RMS Titanic. Our name (Titanic (ship, 1912) or Titanic (ship, 1911)) is logical mistake, because there is no other ship called Titanic? We should use the name category:Titanic or category:Titanic (ship)? Enwiki en:Titanic is redirected to this ship Estopedist1 (talk) 06:46, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- Have a look at Category:Ships by name (flat list). The categories for ships are made up in Commons with the name of the ship (as painted on the hull, so without prefix when not painted) and the year of completion. It was done for years, because Commons was intended to make it possible to find images as easy as possible. Ships have to paint their names on the ships according their certificates. If she gets a new name, the IMO number does not change, the name on the ships has to. If someone want to use an image, this way of naming ship categories makes that possible. The year of completion was used, as this year is used in most site with data for ships. See: http://www.shipspotting.com/, https://www.vesselfinder.com/, https://www.veristar.com Formerly Equasis, site of Govenments, and so on and so on. Please realise that Commons is not intended for only the English Wikipedia. The system of Commons for naming ships by year of completion is used in at least the Frech, German, Polish and Dutch Wikipedias. So the name of the category in this case, following these line, is Category:Titanic (ship, 1912). Besides: Redirecting this category without any discussion bij a new user is not the right way of working, in my opinion. The Titanic is the best known ship, I presume. --Stunteltje (talk) 07:46, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry, saw this discussion too late. Moved 1912 into 1911 which is a common pattern for ships. Am willing to change it according to the outcome of this discussion later. Rudolphous (talk) 20:49, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

seems to be a duplicate to Category:Birds nesting Reseletti (talk) 14:10, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- Not at all!
- Category:Birds nesting are for example breeding birds, birds feeding young etc. Everything where a bird has a nest and lives in or with it.
- Category:Birds building nests are birds, which carry sticks, grass, feathers and add them to the nest, as it is not yet ready or they want to repair or change it.
- Category:Birds building nests may be a subcategory of Category:Birds nesting, depending if you think nesting begins with nest construcion, but it is not the same, as a nest with a breeding bird or chicks is usually ready and no nestbuilding activity occurs then.
- --Kersti (talk) 19:55, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- I think of "nesting" as a synonym for building a nest. Perhaps Category:Birds nesting could be moved to Category:Birds in nests? - Themightyquill (talk) 11:32, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Scree is uncountable, no plural 's': rename to Category:Scree, and ditto to all subcategories. MPF (talk) 21:11, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hmm. I checked several online dictionaries and it seems that scree can be either uncountable, referring to the mass of stones, or countable, referring to the overall feature or slope they create. I'm thinking the current form is probably slightly better; on a quick scroll, the category seems to be dominated by wider shots of "screes" as in slopes rather than close-ups of the scree that makes them up. It also has inertia - there are a LOT of categories in that tree, and they use "screes" quite consistently. – BMacZero (🗩) 05:03, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

These photograps NOT taken about flags! Globetrotter19 (talk) 08:06, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
- Comment I want to create this category because I don't want the Category:Photographs of flags of Hungary to be overcategorized. If you are not happy with the categories, either I can crop the picture (if a flag if not extremely small and visible for the eye) nor remove the category from a picture where the flag is really small. Otherwise, you can remove them or make a cropped version. SpinnerLaserz (talk) 13:57, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
- Alternatively, I can see that I can do with these categories because half of the pictures from Hungary may include the national flag (but they are mostly incidental but some don't) but you can remove the catories from the pictures if you want to. It's just that I tagged these pictures including yours with extremely poor judgement. SpinnerLaserz (talk) 20:58, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you mean by "overcategorized." Do you mean overly full? Because even deleting all the subcategories by city, there seem to be only about 200 images, which will all fit on one page. That's hardly overly full. - Themightyquill (talk) 18:20, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

As a follow-up to the Category:Photographs of flags of Hungary in Pécs as the CFD focuses only one city, these categories either needs possible clean up or recategorization with incidental ones being removed (while cropped ones are categorized. Cropping is actually allowed but only if they had the same license as the original and give credit to the original artist). The categories that filled with pictures that are not intended to be flag pictures are to be purged. Category:Tautomer was created as a subcat of the pre-existing Category:Tautomerism, with a manual interwiki link to en:Tautomer. That's the same enwiki page where that parent points via wikidata, which doesn't seem to indicate any *wiki have separate pages for these two terms. I don't see a conceptual/definitional difference, just a linguistic one (even the cat header desc seems the same). I propose upmerging Tautomer into Tautomerism. A globally locked ex-user left us this peculiar category. Firstly, there were different dishes in the category. Some of them were not even "soups" but "stews". Then connected them to a Chinese "mutton soup" item in Wikidata. I do not know the reason why they were banned but certainly this case is disruptive editing. I opened this discussion to inform people that for the above reasons I took out the Turkish, Greek, Azeri etc dishes out of the cat. I want to take the opportunity to tell people we also had a Category:Offal soup, which I moved to Category:Offal soups. Please do not open "generic" cats in singular, like "mutton soup", "lamb soup", "lamb stew" etc. In many cuisines there are different ways of doing things and they can only be reconciled under a "plural" cat. The case of Category:Lentil soups is a good example. There are three national and "plural" cats in it, i.e. "Lentil soups of Chile", "Lentil soups of Germany", and "Lentil soups of Turkey". That means, even in one country there are various "lentil soups". Take the opportunity to comment on singular-plural "generic" names, like "x soup" / "x soups". (X stands for some common food item, like lamb, mutton, beef, fish, offal, beans etc.) E4024 (talk) 14:34, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

- No, "nesting" has a wider scope which includes the use of a finished nest (laying, brooding, feeding young). If anything, "building nests" ought to be a subcategory for "nesting". --Pitke (talk) 20:18, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- I agree with Pitke. --Auntof6 (talk) 22:30, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Is this category necessary? Adelfrank (talk) 23:05, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- IMHO, as we have "male" and "female" cats it is normal and even good to have this, to separate things better. In many country cats female vocalists are under "vocalists" as if being female is a special feature; wherever we have female "perhaps" we should also have "male" cats; therefore by gender is OK, but not only for Hungary or a few other nations. If others see it unnecessary no problem for me either. --E4024 (talk) 23:11, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- E4024 ,Category:Vocalists from Hungary by gender" is the badest idea ever - not all people find it and Category:Female vocalists from Hungary and Category:Male vocalists from Hungary, this is exact 1 category more in the list - My suggestion: DELETE "by gender" and "normal people" do not unnecessarily complicate access to the category - even if some mean the more categories with subcategories the better Adelfrank (talk) 23:27, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- I would stress there are plenty of worse ideas in the world than categorizing vocalists from Hungary by gender on wikimedia commons. But more specifically, I don't understand your complaint. Are you suggesting we not categorize Category:Vocalists by gender at all? Or that we place all Category:Female vocalists in one enormous category without subdivisions? Or that we not categorize Category:Vocalists by country at all? Or that we should place all Category:Vocalists from the United States into one enormous category without subdivisions? - Themightyquill (talk) 09:01, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Adelfrank (talk) 22:06, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- I would say that the fact that it isn't used for all countries rather demonstrates that commons is short of labour to organize the amount of content, rather than evidence that this organization is unnecessary. I think there are valid arguments against commons' use of gender in general, but that's a much larger discussion than vocalists by country by gender. - Themightyquill (talk) 10:48, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

- Makes sense to me. - Themightyquill (talk) 08:33, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose Merge should be done in the opposite direction and $subject $activity should be adopted as the naming convention for similar categories. 1) For disambiguation purposes, $animal $behaviour is needed in order to distinguish from otherwise identical $purpose $animal (e.g. "herding dogs" vs "dogs herding"). 2) For ease of HotCat use, it is better to have activities of (e.g.) dogs listed once one has typed "dogs", rather than having different animals listed after one has typed "rolling"--trying to find a suitable category for a picture, the animal is trivial to name but the behaviour often not. --Pitke (talk) 09:38, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

- @Themightyquill, PtrQs, and Pitke: user:Pitke's comment is not easy to fully grasp. But, it seems that we have many categories, where the subject is after activity, eg category:Walking people (exercise or sports), category:Running people--Estopedist1 (talk) 05:19, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- Let me try again-- "homing pidgeons" are pidgeons bred and kept for their homing ability--whether nesting, reesting, eating, or actively homing. "Pidgeons homing" is unambiguously limited to the pidgeon activity of homing. "Homing pidgeons" would be ambiguous, and would have to rely on (brackets) or Arbitrary Capitalisation (such as "Homing pidgeons" for the activity and "Homing Pidgeons" for the utility group). Same case exists with at least: walking horses (i.e. term of art for gaited horses) vs horses walking, walking dogs (which would be a bad name for people taking dogs to walks but still a problem) vs dogs walking...

Unclear how this is different from Category:Penicillin antibiotics. Neither is a subcat of other, neither are even in the same parent-cat trees. But I don't see anything in either that doesn't seem consistent with things in the other. DMacks (talk) 23:01, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

problematic (?) requested move:
{{move|Basilica Autarena|Name should not include the town|2020-05-17}}
@Gambo7: in addition, itwiki uses the name "it:basilica autarena" Estopedist1 (talk) 06:33, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- The name should be "Basilica autarena", not "Basilica autarena of...". The current name is the same as "Basilica di San Pietro di Roma", such as "Category:Saint Peter's Basilica of Rome" for "Category:Saint Peter's Basilica", city is not included in category's names, or it should be included, when necessary, as a disambigation. --Gambo7 (talk) 06:42, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

- This category seems to be for anything related to scripts (images, etc), while Category:Wikipedia scripts seems to be for the scripts themselves. If anything, it would make sense to reverse the relationship, with scripts as the child category. - Themightyquill (talk) 07:54, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

"Special" is subjective and does not have a well-defined scope. I suggest the following.
- Delete Category:Special or fictional logos and move the files into Category:Fictional logos, Category:Unofficial logos, or another appropriate logos category.
- Upmerge Category:Fictional logos from Category:Special or fictional logos to parent categories Category:Fictional symbols and Category:Logos
- Upmerge Category:Unofficial logos from Category:Special or fictional logos to parent category Category:Logos, as an unofficial logo does not make it a fictional logo (it is already categorized in Category:Unofficial).
- Remove Category:Estenas Technical Cushion University from this tree, as it is part of the fictional organizations category, not a logos category. ƏXPLICIT 03:23, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

I believe we must dwell a bit more on pancake - crepe differentiation. Frankly I am not sure if at present our cats reflect the real life. Sometimes the different names given to food in different languages (and even in countries with the same language) take one to confusion. What is a "panqueque", a pancake or a crepe? We had a similar issue around "flan" etc. Does anybody remember? In Turkey we make "akıtma". IMHO I could call it pancake in English, crepe in French and panqueque in Spanish. As always I keep my right to be mistaken (again).... E4024 (talk) 18:34, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
- This category, like en:Category:Pancakes uses "pancake" as a general term which includes crepes and other regional variations. That makes sense to me. - Themightyquill (talk) 07:48, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Category:Christian distribution maps, Category:Bahá'í distribution maps, Category:Buddhism distribution maps, Category:Hindu distribution maps, Category:Islam distribution maps, Category:Judaism distribution maps
[edit]Inconsistent naming. Should we be using a) the noun of the religion's name, or b) the adjective of the religion's name, or c) the name of an adherent of the religion? And in the case of Judaism, do we only mean 'Jews' in the religious sense or also in the 'ethnic/cultural/racial' sense? The former would exclude secular/humanist/atheist Jews. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 14:12, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
- PS: My own preference would be a) the noun of the religion's name. This would mean that the following new names would be used: Christianity distribution maps, Bahá'í Faith distribution maps, Hinduism distribution maps; their subcategories would also have to be renamed. The other categories' names would remain unaffected. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 14:27, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support a), because b) and c) sound silly; it's not like maps are professing a religion. --HyperGaruda (talk) 18:49, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- Support a) per HyperGaruda; makes sense. Dragfyre (talk) 12:12, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

Is "library in Mito city" necessary. Mario1257 (talk) 15:47, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
I'll be explanation in Japanese.
--Mario1257 (talk) 15:58, 26 June 2020 (UTC) Modified for clarity.--Mario1257 (talk) 16:34, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- If there is more than one library in the city of Mito, then this category should be allowed. I tried translating what you wrote using Google Translate, but the translation didn't help me understand your reasons. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:22, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Auntof6: Thank you comment. Mito City has a municipal libraries. Japanese Wikipedia has a page w:ja:水戸市立図書館. However, the current category includes other libraries(For example,"Ibaraki University Library".) in Mito City rather than "Mito City Library". I think it is necessary to rename and delete the category. For your information. --Mario1257 (talk) 15:44, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
- No need to delete; create Category:Mito City Library and put it under Category:Libraries in Mito, Ibaraki. The municipal libraries of Mito City are also part of libraries in Mito City, along with the Ibaraki Prefectural Library. Yasu (talk) 15:18, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
