FlickreviewR 2: Malfunction?

As per my observation, it seems that FlickreviewR 2 is not working since 3 March 2022, therefore creating a backlog of over 13000 unreviewed files in Flickr review needed. I wonder if the situation is caused by malfunction of the bot (it's predecessor using the same coding broke down in 2014, so RevieweR 2 is used as a backup), or simply some technical problem on Toolforge? I'd be grateful if some other experienced users can look into the situation, many thanks.廣九直通車 (talk) 04:09, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

Cannot upload photos

I use chorme to upload the photos several times but still cannot upload. The screens show "ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR". How can I fix it ? Thanks!--Canmenwalker (talk) 16:17, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello. There are multiple reasons why you are getting this error in Chrome.
  1. The SSL certificate of the Commons website is broken – which is apparently not the case or we would have seen many more complaints.
  2. The time setting on your computer is somehow wrong. – Please check your computer's clock.
  3. Your internet cache is broken. – Clear cache and cookies in Chrome
  4. Your SSL certificate store is broken.
The third and second issue can be fixed quite easily by yourself, but a broken certificate store requires some more work on your part. So I suggest you check number 2 and 3 first before we get back to your SSL store. De728631 (talk) 16:31, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Prevented by this rule in MediaWiki:Titleblacklist. As a result, File:(𦦡昔)-bronze-warring.svg can't be moved to File:𰯼-bronze-warring.svg, and File:𰠄-silk.svg (used by COM:ACC) can't be created. -- 09:04, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

@沈澄心: I moved the first file for you. It is necessary to create the second one beforehand (i.e. before uploading)? If yes, just give me a ping. As for the regex, you can ask for removal at COM:AN. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 09:33, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh Thanks. But I'm not asking for removal of the regex. This regex just doesn't do what is expected. 09:46, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
@沈澄心: I don't know how to improve it either (the problem is hardly related to regex syntax), but can create File:𰠄-silk.svg as a blank page for the time being. Once a title get bypassed, the page of which should be editable/reuploadable for everyone. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 09:54, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh could you please create File:𰠄-silk.svg for me? 11:05, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh Thanks but I still can't upload the file. 11:16, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
@沈澄心: Well, this is a different problem that is not related to title blacklist. As a workaround, I tried uploading a blank file locally, then imported it to Commons. Please try again and let me know if you still can't. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 11:34, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh still can't. 11:55, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
@沈澄心: What was the warning you saw when attempting to upload the file? NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 11:56, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

(reping @NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh: ) 13:33, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
@沈澄心: The same goes with my alt account. Can you edit the page? NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 13:38, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh Yes. 14:02, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
@沈澄心: Per COM:TPE, [template editor] right may be granted to editors with a demonstrable need to override the title or spam blacklist regularly. I guess you can make an one-time request at COM:RFR. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 14:05, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
On the technical side, that the line has no reupload makes me a bit confused. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 14:07, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh I uploaded the file to File:卒-silk-2.svg. Could you please move it to File:𰠄-silk.svg? 14:37, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
@沈澄心: I truly am an idiot. ✓ Moved. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 14:43, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Survey: Help improve Kartographer

Do you create interactive maps with Kartographer (mapframe)? If your answer is yes, we would like to hear from you. Please take part in our survey and help improve Kartographer! Where do you run into problems using it? Which new features would you like to see? Editors of all experience levels and with all workflows around Kartographer are welcome to participate.

Here is the survey: https://wikimedia.sslsurvey.de/Kartographer-Workflows-EN/

  • The survey is open until March 31.
  • It takes 10-15 minutes to complete.
  • The survey is anonymous. You don't need to register, and we will not store any personal data which identifies you, such as your name or IP address.

Unfortunately, the survey is only available in English, but we have tried our best to use simple English and to add visual examples. If English is not your native language, it might help to use a translation tool in your browser.

Some background: Wikimedia Germany's Technical Wishes team is currently working on the Kartographer extension. Over the last few months, we have been working on a solution to make this software usable on wikis where it isn’t available yet. In the next phase of the project, we are planning to improve Kartographer itself. Because Kartographer is used quite a lot on this wiki, we would love to hear about your experiences. More information on our work with Kartographer and the focus area of Geoinformation can be found on our project page.

Thank you for your help! – Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 09:31, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

The Plant List

The Plant List is used a lot here. Please note that it is no longer available and the link has gone dead. Regards Andyboorman (talk) 19:08, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

@Andyboorman: Would you mind specify what link? NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 01:22, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh: The whole website of en:The Plant List, see Special:LinkSearch/www.theplantlist.org.--Snævar (talk) 17:01, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
@Andyboorman: Not that much actually. Only 460 pages at the moment I searched. Do you know any possible replacements? NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 17:10, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
In the meantime, I've reached out to World Flora Online to inform them about the issue, and have asked them redirect the Plant List to World Flora Online if they are shutting the former down. Ixfd64 (talk) 19:02, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Update: I just heard back from World Flora Online and was told that this is a temporary issue. They are in the process of fixing the Plant Site server. Ixfd64 (talk) 20:11, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Worth mentioning that the Plant List is no longer updated and circumscriptions and synonymies have moved on. I use Plants of the World Online as a replacement. It is easy to use and accessible directly through wiki templates, like {{POWO}} used in Wikispecies. Andyboorman (talk) 20:49, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Nice to hear that. As of now, only 7 templates (including docs) use The Plant List site, and 5 of them seem to be TPL-specific, so I guess this isn't a technical problem as a whole. If TPL is no longer updated, perhaps some notes should be made to redirect people to other templates/sites. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 12:09, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

TIFF file still not rendering 24 hours after upload

I uploaded a large file at File:SC 212246 Surrender of Japan, Tokyo Bay, 2 September 1945.tif yesterday. However, the image is not being rendered and shows a broken image icon. Direct links to the rendered image give this error: "Our servers are currently under maintenance or experiencing a technical problem. Please try again in a few minutes."

However, the issue still persists after over 24 hours since the upload. I don't believe the upload is corrupt because I can download the raw file without issues. Is this normal for large TIFF files? Ixfd64 (talk) 20:10, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

The important details are in the footer:

Request from xx.yy.zz.ww via cp3057 cp3057, Varnish XID 2407936
Upstream caches: cp3057 int
Error: 500, Internal Server Error at Wed, 23 Mar 2022 00:03:36 GMT

Although this information is still not useful, but people with access to the logs can hopefully figure out the actual issue based on them. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:10, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
Might relevant to phab:T133175. Stang 15:30, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
@Ixfd64, Tacsipacsi, and Stang: The tiff-file is imho damaged, see https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/File:Screenshot_from_2022-03-26_22-16-09.png Execution error for procedure 'gimp-image-set-color-profile': ICC profile validation failed: Colour profile is not for greyscale colour space
I uploaded it as a PNG: File:SC_212246_Surrender_of_Japan,_Tokyo_Bay,_2_September_1945.png
@AntiCompositeNumber: Since you repaired Tessie Reynolds 02.tif you might know how to properly repair that tiff.  — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 21:53, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
So does this mean the issue is with the file from NARA rather than just the one on Commons? Ixfd64 (talk) 23:28, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
@Ixfd64: Yes, the file was encoded with an invalid w:ICC profile (the file is grayscale, the color profile is Adobe RGB) by the original source. The png library used by vips is fairly picky, and won't write files with profiles it considers invalid. We try to force an alternate sRGB profile when output fails because of an invalid profile, but that doesn't help here. I've removed the invalid profile from the image and overwritten the file. The colors may not be exactly what was originally intended, but for a grayscale image that's not that big an issue. Thumbnails should appear within an hour or so. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 17:03, 27 March 2022 (UTC)
The image displays correctly now. Thanks! Ixfd64 (talk) 17:25, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Warning: This page contains too many expensive parser function calls.

i'm editing Template:User Firefox. previewing it tells me "It should have less than 500 calls, there are now 501 calls.", but i dont know where it's making expensive calls. should i be worried? i'm saving my edit anyway. RZuo (talk) 12:55, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Can't reproduce. To me it seems completely normal. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 17:03, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Error when trying to delete File:Jay McBain.jpg

I closed the discussion Commons:Deletion requests/File:Jay McBain.jpg, but I've been getting an error when trying to delete the nominated file, File:Jay McBain.jpg. A red pop-up with the following message appears: "DelReqHandler API request failed (backend-fail-internal): An unknown error occurred in storage backend "local-multiwrite"." This has happened both on mobile web (Safari) and desktop (Chrome) browsers. Any help getting the file deleted would be appreciated. I have not had problems deleting other files. IronGargoyle (talk) 14:43, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

@IronGargoyle: Have you tried deleting the file manually? NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 14:51, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
Yes, and I get a similar error: "Error deleting file: An unknown error occurred in storage backend "local-multiwrite"." IronGargoyle (talk) 14:54, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
@IronGargoyle: See T244567. There's nothing we can do at the moment. I uploaded a 1x1 white image as placeholder however. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 15:04, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Preparing for the roll-out of the new audio/video player

Per phab:T248418, it looks like the WMF is finally rolling out their new audio/video player. I have no idea when it might be coming to Commons, but this would probably be a good time to enable it as a Beta feature and report bugs. Nosferattus (talk) 13:46, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Incorrect SVG preview

The image File:Brown_rat_distribution.svg renders to PNG as https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b1/Brown_rat_distribution.svg/800px-Brown_rat_distribution.svg.png showing a big red chunk corresponding to Queen Maud's Land. However, as I intended it, and as Inkscape renders it, appears as https://imgur.com/a/IQy4idA and I'm not sure why. Note that all of the color fills are set by the internal stylesheet, so any issue is likely a CSS problem.--Ipatrol (talk) 21:57, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

librsvg, which renders PNG previews, is extremely buggy. Here we have phab:T43423: the descendent selector .aq * on line 150 is not being applied (you can imitate librsvg's result by deleting it).
A tool exists for scanning files for these problems; it handles T43423, but only detects child (not descendent) selectors. In this case, what I did to locate the problem was examine the SVG using browser developer tools to see what was special about the affected elements.
Off the top of my head, a revoltingly inelegant fix would be to select the paths that make up that region individually. Also, is that island chain by Brazil (South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands) correct? They're coloured red but have a grey circle. — wqnvlz (talk·contribs) 03:25, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
Uploaded a workaround. The other island north of Antarctica is also affected by the bug; I'm not sure what colour it's supposed to be. — wqnvlz (talk·contribs) 03:34, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
@Ipatrol: ✓ Done I noticed the references section. Made it so only Alberta, Antarctica, and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are grey.  —wqnvlz (talk·contribs);  20:30, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

I asked at Template talk:House number but does know how technically to remove the individual country categories from being both under a country cat and the main one? For example, you can see that Category:Items numbered 2 has both: (a) Category:2 (house number) which has Category:2 (house number) by country and (b) has individual country category like Category:2 (house number) in Spain which is duplicative. I also don't see the need for each country-by-house-number category to force populate a corresponding category for number in country like Category:2 (number) in Spain but I don't know enough to even test playing with it (nor do I think I want to). -- Ricky81682 (talk) 05:54, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

@Ricky81682: You can modify the parent categories of many categories at once using Cat-a-lot with the option Allow categorising pages (including categories) that are not files enabled.
It has been some time since I read the guidelines, but I don't see any issue that the nonexistent category link causes. If desired, the template generating the category links could be changed to only output a link if it exists.  —wqnvlz (talk·contribs);  18:58, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
@Wqnvlz I use Cat-a-lot but it is locked for categories like Category:2 (house number) in Spain because of the template. Maybe a separate template is needed. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 03:02, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
