Missing flags

The following 80 countries' flags do not yet exist in svg format, or if they do, I could not find them; please strike them out as you upload them so I can update the country code templates. Thanks! en:User:Nightstallion 11:30, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

1. Image:Flag of Venezuela.svg (current version does not include the COA)

I left off the arms due to the fact that I am inept drawing arms. I do own a VE flag, made in Caracas, that has the arms. I think we will have to get the arms from one of the existing SVG images of this flag. Zscout370 07:31, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

European flag

I don't like the name of Image:European flag.svg. Should it be Flag of the European Union, or Flag of the Council of Europe, or Flag of Europe? I'd personally say Flag of the EU.svg, since that is what it's primarily used as, but it's also used as the flag of the CoE... ナイトスタリオン ✉ 08:40, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Georgia

Since we've got w:Flag of the State of New York where it is, I thought it pretty logical that w:Flag of the State of Georgia should be the article about the flag of the US state of Georgia... no? ナイトスタリオン ✉ 21:16, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Quality of SVG graphics

Although I appreciate the ongoing uploading of SVG versions of several flags, I strongly recommend that good-quality PNGs should not be replaced by low-quality or mediocre-quality SVGs. Image:Flag of Tibet.svg was a good, but not the only example.--Mevsfotw 18:08, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Agreed, it's pretty sad compared to Image:Flag of Tibet.gif. People need to do more than just run it through a tracer and upload it. :p The good news is that we can, of course, fix it and have an SVG version as accurate as the raster version. Yeah, that would be good. We'd basically need to have someone who knows his SVG editting go through all the national flags, compare them to the png versions we have (which seem to be as correct as is possible), and correct the discrepancies... Our main problem lies in trying to draw symbols that are not regular or trying to draw coats of arms. Most of the coats of arms look decent, but I am trying to fix up the Mexican coat of arms. But there is just a lot of stuff to put in. Plus, I have two variants I need to draw of the arms, which will take me a while to do. Zscout370 08:05, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

Naming conventions

I think we should tighten our naming conventions and make flag (and coat of arms) filenames match the exact title of the en article on the entity the flag identifies.

What it would boil down to:

• Flags like Image:Flag of the People's Republic of China.svg would become Image:Flag of People's Republic of China.svg, as en uses en:People's Republic of China.
• No thought, no debate (here :p), reduced likelihood of forgetting filenames/wasting time; finding a flag would be exactly as simple as finding the English Wikipedia article on the entity the flag is for. ¦ Reisio 18:50, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

But en uses w:Flag of the People's Republic of China, which is exactly why the flag here is named Image:Flag of the People's Republic of China.svg. User:dbenbenn 19:49, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

But the naming scheme is already consistent: Flag of (the) NAME.svg. What do you want to tighten there? AFAIK, image names are supposed to follow the rules for article names, and should be descriptive and correct - and "Flag of Czech Republic" is not really correct, is it? ;) ナイトスタリオン ✉ 09:50, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

When I name files, I try to follow English grammar as much as I can. Sometimes, I get it right, but sometimes, I screw up. But, I agree, we should try to follow what the EN article title is when we name images, if possible. Zscout370 22:11, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Colours to be used?

I am slightly concerned by the choice of colours used for most of the flags here (png as well as svg). On the one hand the colours of the images range widely, i.e. flags that are supposed to show the same colour do show quite different shades; on the other hand there are ongoing and totally fruitless discussions about the translation of (e.g.) Pantone colours into the RGB/sRGB colours to be used in PNGS and SVGs (this is like asking: How many apples are one banana). I think to have consistent and correct information in the flag graphics, we *must* discuss this general issue, before discussing detailled colour questions (see Italy above).--Mevsfotw 12:21, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

It may seem odd, but there are established standard RGB values for basically all the Pantone colors (even from Pantone itself [1]) and imo (and others', e.g. Image talk:Flag of Sweden.svg) they come out fine. The Italy thing has more to do with someone not understanding what "white" means. Lots of flags were just uploaded from the openclipart, sodipodi and xrmap collections and are sometimes outdated and sometimes quite inaccurate. It seems to me that the images created personally by those involved in the flag stuff are usually quite accurate, so we mostly just need to go through and check or update the flags that were imported from other collections; a lengthy process, but it will get done eventually. What I do is try to find the official construction sheets that are officially sanctioned by each government. I also try to find official colors from the government, in the case of Bulgaria and the Slovenia flag. Unified set of Pantone approximations for Wikimedia Commons flags?

I've been following (and have been involved in some of) the discussions at Image talk:Flag of Italy.svg, Image talk:Flag of the United Kingdom.svg, and Image talk:Flag of Fiji.svg about what Pantone colours should be used.

What I propose is that this project define a set of Pantone approximations for use on Commons—i.e. our own Pantone chart— so someone wanting to draw a flag with Pantone colours will look up a colour chart recommended/mandated (?) for use here, created by us for us. Hopefully this will move disputes about colours from the image talk pages to a singe discussion page devoted to colours, monitored by people knowlegeable in the subject.

I've noticed that people (incl. me) have used either internet pantone charts (of which there are many) or have been using Photoshop for approximations. However what this fails to address are the various issues such as

• sRGB or Adobe colour space?
• have these been actually checked with someone who has correctly calibrated his monitor and has access to a Pantone swatch book? (which eventually leads to: what does "accurate" mean?)
• Are Wikimedia resources ever going to be put on paper?
• and a lot more other questions

I think that those questions and a lot more need to be addressed in order to get a set of colours for use on Commons. One thing I'd like to get out of the way here is that if a government officially defines RGB values for a flag this worry will not apply at all (obviously). Once the above are solved, colours could be found by:

• extracting the appropriate RGBs from an authoritative source like Pantone Colorist; or if this is not possible—
• Multiple users with actual Pantone books could set up their computers and room lighting and find colours by eye--intensive and not so exact, hence the need for multiple takes;
• etc etc.

I know that the above proposal is not in depth or exact but I hope this sparks a discussion on what to do about the various disputes in the long run. I'm not a professional either so if someone knows more please feel free to strike incorrect/"strange"/impossible parts from my text above. Greentubing (en:WP talk) 23:36, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

In my experience here I've found that other people's Pantone approximates are usually the same as the ones I would use, so I don't see a problem there. The only list I think would be worth compiling is one of the official Pantone conversions, which would undoubtedly be copyright infringement. ¦ Reisio 05:29, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

IIRC Pantone Colorist provides two sets of RGB values depending on whether you use sRGB or Adobe colour space, which is why I noted that above. If my knowledge about the colour spaces is correct sRGB is more suited for web/digital use (what Wikimedia projects mostly are atm) while Adobe c.s. is aimed more towards print projects. And the copyright issue is why I have raised the idea of multiple users with calibrated monitors to find the RGB themselves. While at first glance I too that this unified Pantone proposal seems excessive, I think in the long run this will prevent a lot of headaches. Greentubing (en:WP talk) 05:52, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

I would love it if someone could nail down the Pantone issue once and for all. Doesn't Pantone sell a Pantone->RGB conversion chart? I've been using random conversion charts found on the web, but I can't really be sure how accurate they are. User:dbenbenn 08:03, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for starting Denelson83. This list of colours used on British (and derived) flags could be a useful list to convert since a lot of flags use them (of course my priority is not your priority). (new side topic) My two cents on the colour space questions are that sRGB is the way to go. The sRGB colour profile ships with most (?) versions of Windows whereas you probably need to buy an Adobe product to get the Adobe configuration file. Plus IMO most end users have neither the knowledge nor patience to calibrate monitors for either sRGB or Adobe so I think its best to stick to what the default settings are on end-users' machines. That said:

• Even if sRGB is chosen the colours will never appear the same even between two sRGB machines unless the monitors are correctly set up wrt contrast/brightness/backlighting etc; and
• Adobe has a wider colour range and from what I've read, is technically superior, even if very few people can use it properly. See this demonstration (scroll till the flower pictures) to see the effects of using the correct colour profile on viewing images. Greentubing (en:WP talk) 09:23, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

I am going to use the official RGB colors on this one, since while typing in the official CMYK colors on Inkscape, they always keep on reverting. And, if y'all are following [3], then the golden disc should be placed at X:7.00 and Y:5.00 Zach ^{(Smack Back)} 01:54, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Ya I was checking the emblem centering and it did appear off to me mathematically, but most likely because it was drawn, not typed out...that is to say after I centered it mathematically, it was not centered (could tell by looking at it). It's not literally perfect, but it's not far off. Gonna take a long while to cleanup and simplify that emblem code until it's more manageable. ¦ Reisio 13:12, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Not even the last one matches the one on Image:Flag of Portugal.svg (which, for those of you that weren't part of it, was harvested from the Portuguese government's "this is how you make the flag, chump" site). So I'm sort of curious if any of them are accurate. Maybe the "king's" arms are just a tad different from the "normal arms". There's also Image:Coat of arms of Portugal.png...I assume the decorative stuff on the sides is normal, though. ¦ Reisio 23:06, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

colour shades of the finnish flag?

Hi, which color of the finnish flag should we use? I found three sources

1. FOTW
2. en:Flag of Finland
3. Finnish flag law

No. 1 and 2 are cmyk-approximations to the pantone system. They are quite similar (see also figure right). No. 3 contains an additional specification in the en:Lab color space-System, which appears (also approximated) darker. Kookaburra 10:19, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

The current version of Image:Flag of Finland.svg uses #003f87. I guess that should be changed to the flag law version, which in your picture is #2c437e. User:dbenbenn 18:06, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

I think the cmyk values on FOTW and WP-en are approximated to the pantone specification in the flag law (5 §). So, I'm surprised, that the blue of the pantone specification is quite different to that of the L*a*b specification, which is also regulated in the flag law (3 §)... Olympic flag?

I have manually reproduced the flag of the Olympic Movement in SVG format using Inkscape, but I am a bit apprehensive about sending it to the Commons, because of the IOC's aggressive stance against abuse of the Olympic Symbols. Coats of Arms, Symbols, etc. WikiProjects

They kind of go with flags most of the time. Should we just make a WikiProject Coats of Arms (or something), or just toss it into Flags? Maybe an umbrella WikiProject Symbols for Flags and Coats of Arms and emblems and various other thingies? I personally like/anticipate working on them all, so for me there's not a lot of point in separating it out, but there's no harm, either, and undoubtedly some people have preferences. Problem with Image:Bandeira do Espírito Santo.svg

I am having problems with Image:Bandeira do Espírito Santo.svg. I do not know why we cannot see the motto "Trabalha e confia", as in Image:Bandeira do Espírito Santo.png. --E2m 03:59, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

I'll dig through on the mailing list for FOTW, but with the shitstorm I caused with the Venezuela flag, I am going to wait for something accurate and reliable to come out. But, with this region, I highly doubt the flag could change. Angola talked about changing their flag in 2002, and nothing has happened since, though a design is online. Never mind, the answer is "yes". Check flagspot.net'a page on DR Congo, they will return to the old flag. As soon as it's official, we'll have some changing to do.

I've put up Image:Flag of a British Governor (traditional).svg and Image:Flag of a British Governor (modern).svg. I'm not too sure on the specs for the modern flag so I think we should hold off from using the modern version until someone who knows the exact specs can rezise it. Flags of Denmark

I've reverted the recent edit to the w:Flag of Denmark page, that updated the flag images to .svg. The flag of the Civil Flag (Image:Flag of Denmark.svg) seems pretty much ok. The State Flag (Image:Flag of Denmark (state).svg) should be updated to the same colours.

The Naval Flag (Image:Naval Ensign of Denmark.svg) should be much darker than the present version. It should correspond to the colour shown on Image:Naval Flag Denmark.png.

When the two images have been updated, feel free to change the images to .svg. I'm sorry I can't refer to an official specification, but the problem is that it simply doesn't exist. I'm unable to specify the colours any better than this. Best regards. --Valentinian 11:20, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

The new images are much better now. Two minor points: 1) The red colour on the Civil Flag and State Flag should be identical (the Naval Ensign still has a different colour). Personally, I prefer the colour on the Civil Flag. 2) The background to the State Flag and Naval Ensign should be transparent (like I believe is the case in Image:Naval Ensign of Sweden.svg and Image:Flag of Norway, state.svg. In this respect, the main difference between the Swedish and Norwegian War Ensigns versus the Danish flag (the State Flag) is that Sweden, Norway, and Finland all use three tails; Denmark and Iceland use two tails. Flag of Montreal

I've just created and uploaded an SVG of the Flag of Montreal to replace this version. It's my first flag, and I'm not very vexillologically (?) inclined, so I would appreciate comments and criticism, particularly regarding colors and detail, since I drew it by hand (no tracers involved) before I start adding it around the Wikipedias. Good job. I do not see anything wrong with the flag image, since I do not have much details on the flag design itself. As for the license, I would use a Creative Commons license, with Share Alike and Abtribution requirements, unless this flag is considered public domain by Canadian/Quebec/Montreal law. A few images uploaded to the English Wikipedia look corrupted on my screen:

Was Flag of Nova Scotia deleted?

Is it just my imagination, or was Image:Flag of Nova Scotia.svg, the flag for the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, deleted? The deletion log notes "In category Against policy; no permission" however I thought that provincial-level flags were un-copyrightable and thus tagged {{PD-Flag}}. --Kralizec! 21:21, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Pantone Colors (Part II)

Good news: There is now an official Pantone-to-RGB converter (of sorts; see below) at http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/colorfinder.aspx. No more discussions about Pantone :D (Finally...)

Of course, the "color" is just a little box in the corner of the product catalogue, and is not intended to be a "conversion" as such; but at least it is better than using Adobe or Corel's products to convert--- at least with the Pantone website, one can be assured that the rendered color is for Web use.
