Description
Français : Tigresse et éléphant naturalisés en provenance des collections de Philippe d'Orléans. En 1888, alors qu'il est âgé de 19 ans et qu'il est contraint à l'exile, le duc Philippe d'Orléans (1869-1926), prince prétendant au trône de France, s'enrôle dans l'Armée britannique et part pour l'Inde. Arrivé à destination son cousin Henri l'invite à une chasse au tigre. Lors de cette chasse une tigresse saute sur la howdah (nacelle) où se trouve le prince, en cassant de son poids l'une des lanières qui accrochent la nacelle à son éléphant et en ramenant le fauve immédiatement à terre. Le lendemain la tigresse est traquée et tuée, puis plus tard naturalisée. Cette tigresse est de nos jours conservée dans la grande galerie de l'Évolution du Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, à Paris. Un autre éléphant que celui que chevauchait le prince a été aussi naturalisé, formant ainsi un ensemble visant à la mise en scène de cet épisode de la vie du prince.
